eNSWE Its a shame this piece of art is so full of hate, I on the other hand find it beautiful as DT can do... Its a trascendetal album IMO and I will be loved for many in the future! Always thankful, DT.
Yes man,you know, the art is different appreciation for everybody, any one can like or dislike . Everyone have a choice of like or dislike.. respect your appreciation brader
I don't care what people say. Some seems just to enjoy DT purely for the virtuosity and the most aggressive tracks... I'm just the contrary. I disliked Train Of Tohught but I cna understand why some don't like this album... Yet, I like it, it's just maybe a bit long, but I enjoy listeninnng to the wholer of it, ior just parts of it if I don't have the time for the whole 2 hours. I think they were courageous to release this double album. What I like in "The Astonishing" is that it's a very melodic piece of work, with many softer moments, some epic, symphonic ones too, beautiful instrumental parts, maybe less than usual, or rather some shorter ones... But there are many spread over the album. and James LaBrie sings so well on it...
+RadioactiveRelicanth If you had a choice: movie of this? Or Scenes from a Memory? It's tough, but I'd probably go with this. I feel like this has a lot more meat to it, creating a better film.
+RadioactiveRelicanth According to Petrucci, he had every intention of turning this into some other form of visual media. HE even thought of the possibility of a game
+Mike Gottschau On his reddit he said there would be novels. I strongly doubt that this track is the last of what we see (or probably hear who knows? :P) Of The Great Northern Empire and that's cool :D
[Arhys' Spirit:] Brother can you hear me His life is in your hands He is just a child and still too young to understand Show him love and courage That freedom knows no bounds Tell him he could never let me down [Xander:] Father I will make you proud Rest in peace [Gabriel:] I always had the answer All this time I held the key And now that I see The reason to believe I can be the man who I am meant to be [Faythe:] Because of you I live again Now I can be a voice for change And help to build a world that's fair and true So they can live the life they never knew [Nafaryus:] On the road to revolution There are lessons to be learned All the things you thought that mattered Are lost at every turn When the light of my existence Was slipping through my hands Pride and ignorance receded To reveal a humbled man [Arabelle:] My prince, my son You got lost along the way In light of this new burden that you face You are forgiven on this day [Ensemble:] People, can you hear us? Peace has been restored The silence has been broken Music reigns forever more We sing a song of freedom Together we are bound People, we shall never hold you down We will build our world on common ground And we'll live once more Eternally In harmony Our lives will be Astonishing Again
Its weird. As soon as this song ends I end up going right back to Descent of the NOMACS. I haven't been able to stop... What have you done to me DT??????? Oh well back to song 1, be back in a little over 2 hours lol
I think this is the best album they've made in years. As a huge DT fan, I wasn't in love with the last few as much as the earlier stuff, but I was floored by this, I think this is the best since Six Degrees, or even Metropolis. It honestly sounds actually beautiful at times. It's not a retread of an earlier sound either, it's brand new and FRESH from them, the new lineup really coming into their own, although it does bring back the big pop and rock influences that I love about DT (more than most other prog metal bands). The symphonic stuff also blends perfectly with the rest of the sound, instead of feeling tacked on. I bought live tickets, but was worried how much I'd actually like the album, but now I can't wait to see it all performed live.
This album makes me cry literally. Great job guys! You are the legend and the future of music!

amazing rock opera. i would've needed a libretto. on the other hand, I decided to listen to this album while making pancakes. I made 33 pancakes, washed the dishes, and the album still had 3 more songs. My. God. It's. Huge!
Dream Theater doing what they do best! This album is going to get a lot of listens for sure. It's the best musical masterpiece from them I have ever heard. While I love SFAM, The Astonishing has some of the best and most moving pieces of music they have ever written, in my opinion. Well done Dream Theater!
This actually makes their name make sense. What a absolutely fantastic album. I honestly want to see a theater play or something of this album. I dont care what people say about this album, it rocks!
I honestly feel like this is their best CD ever. I can honestly say that and not feel like im lying to myself. I know it is def not a majority opinion but man after seeing it live, it just solidified it for me
I never noticed until today: the string melody over Xander's "Father, I will make you proud, rest in peace" is the "Is this the chance to be someone, my moment in the sun/Why am I afraid of facing the unknown?" melody from The Answer! Such continuity. Much talent. Very DT.
this part makes me feel very lucky to be able to live in an epoch where this album was released ! The end of this song is absolutely one of the most exciting things I've ever heard! "People, can you hear us? Peace has been restored The silence has been broken Music reigns forever more! We sing the song of freedom Together we are bound People, we shall never hold you down! We will build a world on common ground And we’ll live once more Eternally in harmony Our lives will be astonishing again!"
I'm now on my 6th or 7th full listen though (all 2 hours) and I continue to cry every time these closing verses come. Just such a majestic, beautiful way to sum up the story and arch of the music. One of the most perfect closings to an album I've heard.
I saw the astonishing live and it was the most magical and best concert i have been on, usually after concerts I feel excited and happy but after this I was sad because I did not wanted it to end. I hope I can go watch them lie again soon.
Thoroughly enjoyed this album from start to finish. This is the greatest album I've heard in a while and a great followup to the masterpiece that was Illumination Theory. Well done DT!
OH MY GOD. I'm fucking astonished you guys! I'll eat my words: I was really worried with the cliche silly looking art and shit going into this - well, you fucking delivered AND THEN SOME. This is amazing. Seriously one of your greatest albums IN A LONG TIME. I'm absolutely blown away right now. I am so happy to say Iron Maiden and Dream Theater are my two favorite bands, they both put out FUCKING AMAZING albums this winter~ season and they're BOTH coming to Chicago on separate occasions this April! ASTONISHED.
Well then, after 2 hours being taken on this journey, in conclusion, i have to say this is a great album. Probably their best since Octavarium. Great lyrics, melody variety, good use of string and chorus sections, all in all very well produced. This is by far James' best work today. He is amazing on this album and every single track suits him perfectly. I guess i didn't expect so many slow songs, i wanted more odd-time signatures, maybe a few longer tracks, a bit more accent on John and Jordan's solos maybe, and i definitely expected a bit more metal. But i guess that was MP's saying in their older stuff. Also i didn't really feel the drumming. While they are definitely good and complement the music perfectly, that is all they are. They don't stand out at all, MP always stood out, all tracks. Well here i go again, crying for Portnoy yet again, im babbling. This was a great experience guys, thank you very much, amazing album.
I can't understand the persons who are disliking this incredible and wonderful song. And all the album is waaaawww. I love it. Thanks to all the team of Dream Theater.
I love you all! you 5 people are able to transform the universal language called music, in something more than a simple track. This is Exceptional! Tnx to exist James, John , Mike, John, Jordan ... Peace !
I live in India and I was so blessed to see DT live in Mumbai last week! It was a dream come true :) A one-of-a-kind group that will be remembered far beyond this generation..
What details of the story did everyone gather after only listening to the album and not reading any lyrics? -Some chosen one has a good voice -Someone gets betrayed -There's a revolution against some evil king and robots that's all I got lol
Seriously, i'm a big slice of humble pie this morning. How great is this?? i thought this wasn't going to be very good at all! But well, i was dead wrong!!
thank you dream theater, just thank you for this masterpiece album, i didnt expect too much to be honest but ..... what can i say this is just Astonishing .
I was a massive DT fan as a teenager and still listen to those albums every now and then, SFAM being my absolute favourite. From then on though the albums seemed to lose the spark (before and after Portnoy leaving) and though there are great moments and great songs on those later albums they seemed to get less and less every one. I hardly listened to the self titled album at all, and wasn't particularly interested in the buildup to this one other than knowing I'd give it a few listens almost since I think I owe the band that much. First play through this one I wasn't particularly moved, thought 3 days and A New Beginning were really good but not much else, I came back for a second though, and now I've done 5 or 6 on RU-vid I'm ordering the album and just massively massively impressed. Nice one guys, didn't think you'd get me like this again. Superb songwriting, lyrics and story cheesy in places but hey when weren't they? It's at once more restrained and yet more out there than anything for ages. I can pick some holes which would be in the drum writing and mixing, but honestly I've had so much fun with this album already I don't really want to here. Bravo.
this album is DIFFERENT and TREMENDOUS and BRILLIANT and ADDICTING every song SUCKS you into the depth of imagination and success.. . HOW did they do this? GENIUSES pure GENIUSES DREAM THEATER FOREVER
John, Jordan, John, Mike, James.....why not a longer end? it's so majestic but it lasts too early. I would like to hear it for minutes because of the chills i feel. I can't stop listening the entire album, continuously and continuously and continuously....
I'm doing youtube music streaming right now while I'm at work, and like the rest of you guys, I can't stop repeating the whole album like story needs a continuation. I love this album...lit's like you're watching an epic saga movie about life.
See you in London on 19th! Can't wait to see this show live! Once again Dream Theater has shown what real progressive rock is, what good music is....Thank you, for great inspiration, for this great musical masterpiece....
Because of you I live agaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin... Now I can be a voice for change and help to build a world thats fair and true so they can live the life they never knew :'( :'( Damn... Straight in the feels...
Brother, can you hear me? His life is in your hands He is just a child and still too young to understand Show him love and courage The freedom knows no bounds Tell him he could never let me down I always had the answer All this time I held the key And now that I see The reason to believe I can be the man who I am meant to be Because of you I live again Now I can be a voice for change And help to build a world that's fair and true So they can live the life they never knew On the road to revolution There are lessons to be learned All the things you thought that mattered Are lost at every turn When the light of my existence Was slipping through my hands Pride and ignorance receded To reveal the humbled man My prince, my son You got lost along the way In light of this new burden that you face You are forgiven at this day People, can you hear us? Peace has been restored The silence has been broken, music reigns forever more We sing the song of freedom Together we are bound People, we shall never hold you down We will build a world on common ground And we'll live once more Eternally in harmony Our lives will be astonishing again
I kinda want to see this produced as an actual rock opera, with different people and different registers voicing all the different parts. I want bassy Nafaryus and Daryus; baritone Narrator; and tenor Ahrys and Gabriel. Alto Arabelle and soprano Faythe. And ideally male alto or sop Xander, though high tenor would also work. Favourite song of the whole album is undoubtedly Lord Nafaryus, because I love those melodies.
Wow, I have made the last song in the journey. I feel like I just hiked the Appalachian Trail and am now looking back on my experience. Except, this time I can't wait to start over anew. First time through: I'm just breaking in: listening to the tunes but not really taking in lyrical content, themes, riffs, tempo changes, composition, picking out my favorite songs, etc. I wonder how many times through it'll take before I feel I've mastered this journey. My wife is buying me the album for Valentine's Day!
