This is a video compilation of some Sega Dreamcast games running on 1080p hd in true widescreen (when possible).
The emulator is NullDC 1.0.4 played with an xbox360 controller, recorded with FRAPS.
Games on this video: MSR Metropolis Street racer, Toy commander, Space Channel 5.
With this Emulator it is possible to recreate true 16:9 visuals thanks to its option that enables the "extra geometry" required to fill the borders of the screen. Some games works great with this option but they will show some graphical glitches on the right and left borders of the screen. That's not an emulator glitch, it is really the way DC calculated the non-visible graphic working in standard 4:3 screen ratio.
Space Channel 5 only works in 4:3.
Finally note that some graphical problems are present here and there, that's beacuse the emulator is still in development but allready works really great ihmo.
Without the recording software enabled everything runs without any frame drop or sound clipping.

there was something about the games from the mid 90's to the early 2000's, they had a certain feel to them, like the dev's put their heart and soul into the games

I still cant forget draconus cult of the wyrm that game is stuck in my heart for ever was truly epic game sucks that my DC console is broken else I would still be playing the game and the other good games

@IrrepressibleGuile Mr Irrepressible Well, back then budgets and development teams were smaller.. so there was more room for a little heart and soul in the development process. And I agree, you can feel a lot of that from games in that era. It's partly what made the Dreamcast so wonderful and why so many people love it. I often hear retro gamers say "there's just something about the Dreamcast". That middle ground seems to be gone these days. Most games are either very small indie titles that are far simpler in scope, or really huge big budget AAA projects that have so much at stake there isn't any room for the developers to have a little fun and inject some love into their work.

Totally agree, that's why I'm increasingly turning more to retrogaming and giving use to my Mega Drive, Dreamcast, and PS1. But there's an additional component to this, there's a scientific name for it which I can't recall but there is a mental process where these games' graphics and worlds were far from "realistic" so your brain automatically filled in the details, thus making your experience unique, memorable, and more personal - you'd create a deeper connection to the game and you will " remember stuff" that wasn't really there in the first place.

The entire soundtrack of MSR was newly written songs by Richard Jacques. He wrote songs in a variety of styles for three radio stations in each of the three countries. You had jazz, heavy rock, electronica, an Oasis soundalike called Salford Keys, some country, and a rap track featuring a vocalist called MC Momo which was either brilliant or terrible, depending upon your point of view. Impressive that one man created all those songs. You can download all these tracks from fansites. I get instant nostalgia when I hear those songs because they only exist in that one Dreamcast videogame. Takes me back to 2000/2001 in the blink of an eye.

Hong Kong Hermit also have this game, and yes the music is nostalgic for sure, i´m very happy with this console for so many years, it gave me so many hours of fantastic games. good for me that i have 2 working like new, and some of the best games for this system. the same for ps2 and the xbox, the master system,mega drive and 32x, nes, gameboy´s etc. msr is one of th best racing games on dreamcast, but i play more often sega rally 2 and tokio extreme racer 2, and demolition racer no exit, this last one is a gem and a greeat one to, lucky for me that i have them and some others that are good to.

It was way ahead of everything at the time. The whole city-mapping thing (photo/video to texture) was the first time it had been attempted at that level before, with altitude rise/decline and street imperfections measured by way of rumble pack, and the time of day worldwide, and the regional radio with DJs made the game as authentic as ever been tried before. Then, there was those incredible graphics...

I bought this game when it was released in 2000 and the graphics, like most games on the Dreamcast, were mind-blowing at the time. Two other games that were really amazing were Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2.

Pilkie101 I didn’t try the single player (my friend unlocked all the levels). This is split-screen, 4-player DeathMatchBox Heaven! We had a rule- no aircraft (they suck), but we played it every time we hung out for years! Those friends are not in my life much these days, but if 1 game could reunite the Three King’s of Olive, this would be it! *deathmatch* is the only mode that matters.

mcrazza MSR was constantly pushed back on release schedules- but my mercy, how gorgeous it became. Worth the wait! The real-time light-sourced shading is unreal for the time and hardware. 👍

Those were unlockable after U beat the last bosses. Boss race was 3 Skylines witch was able to race at 300km\h but U didn't had a car which was able to have that high speed...man it was hardest race I ever had in games...

Блин, раньше не был знаком с Дримкастом. Посмотрел несколько роликов с играми и понял, что графон классный, не мерцающий как у PlayStation, глаза не напрягает. А у PS даже на четвертой все еще подобная проблема, или в Сони специально делают чтоб у вас глаза повытекли, блядь!!!

When I look at these games that still look pretty good, I can't believe that any modern console game fails to hold a stable framerate. I'd be totally fine with Dreamcast level geometry as a base, then add extra detail and effects/shaders until it starts taxing the framerate

anyone who wishes to replay some of the dreamcast games its very easy to do..if dont have a pc you can easily play them on reicast for android and the emulation is near perfect except for a few major bugs in some game fmvs (mortal kombat gold sufers from fmv bug before starting) and the touch controls could be redone but theres an image file that lets you create your own :)...love playing doa2, re series grandia 2 and many others again...

Damn. Such a shame SEGA fucked up. Hopefully they return one day to making consoles. They still make arcade machines. Dreamcast was ahead of its time I think if they invested as much into making a console now a days, they'd definitely win back people and get good sales to start off.

Good grief! This is gorgeous! I remember reading that they modeled the environments so dead-on, if you lived on a street in the game you could pull up and see your own house down to your hedges! “Yeah, right!” Uhhh... Yeah!!! Right!!! It’s true! I’m sure by now with 87TFLOPS RUNNING AT 467,392 Ghz, that’s not super rare. But this was 2000, nearly 20 years ago! 1. Buy a Dreamcast 2. Buy a VGA box (or )6 3. Thank the Lord you’re alive and able to pl'ay so much from a “dead system”. From 1999.

One thing that bothers the hell out of me is when people tout the DC as having better textures than early PS2 games, and personally I think there are two different things going on that I need to address. On the DC, the textures are often higher resolution, but highly repeated and on low poly models that makes surfaces look way to stark and flat. On early PS2 titles like Gran Turismo 2, you have lower res textures, but a greater number and variety of them with much higher polygon counts.

Baby steps. First need to get a semi-decent engine running based on free tools, and some basic gameplay demo. Post on the net, send it to Red Spot Games in Germany, and i think something can be arranged. I mean what good is it gonna do if you post on Kickstarter "Hi there, i'm me. I want to make the awesomest Dreamcast game ever but i have nothing to show for it". Who is gonna believe you? If there's an open-source game or game engine that you think needs porting, hit me up and i think we can come up with something.

What are you talking about? It's not magic. What you say it's true for 2D graphics, 3D games can be forced to output at higher resolution with emulators because it's about geometry. It's called math, not magic. Do some reaserch.

Meh... I'd still prefer to play the original MSR rather than the shitty reboot PGR. Seriously. But unfortunaly... there is no MSR re-release in sight... untill Sega gets their head of their fucking asses, becomes the company again that they used to be and make it possible for us to play our DC originals on a new console that has a more reliable disc drive. I would'nt kiss Micro$ofts ass for saving Bizarre Creations, dude. Bizarre Creations were closed in 2010 and do not exist anymore. -.-

Thanks! I will have to get that game if and when I see it - MSR. Funny thing is that I see is this - there appears to be no pop-in graphics that plagued the Xbox 360 and PS3. The developers did a great job with this game and its pretty awesome that a system that is old, and at least for this game, had no pop-in graphics. I was able to purchase a Dreamcast finally. Found it while I was at my local Goodwill. Came with the system and all hookups as well as 4 controllers - standard color, gold, blue, a huge green one and another blue one - all for 24.99 and I also picked up 2 Dreamcast games - complete for 2 dollars each and then was able to find a Wii U Turtle Beach headset for 12.99 - never opened or even used, heck, it still had the clearance tag from Target on it

Eric Wells 24.99? great business, now you need to find some vmu´s and rumble pack just like me. i need to find at least 2 vmu´s and 2 rumble pack for my controlers. try to buy crazy taxy, sega rally 2, the msr game that i also have, tokio extreme racer 2, sega gt , dont forget to find the first sonic game(sonic adventure) a sega console without sonic?? you must have it, ho by the way try to find shenmue and give it a try. i play this game for years and i want more. for the time and even now, i know this game is trully amazing experience if you are the kind of guy that likes of open world,real life games like this one. is massive. dead or alive 2 is the only fighting game that i own and a demo of rady to rumble 2 on dream on volume 1! need to find marvel vs capcom 2, guilty gear and the street fighter series.

It's an unlockable veichle and it's pretty fast. There is also a lawnmower as a secret veichle on this game wich is quick as well ;)

I’m 1:33 in, and I’ve never been more impressed with a console. Metropolis Street Racer uses actual photos of real cities and neigh borhoods they filmed and photo’d to build the 3 very accurate cities. Did I mention the real-time light-source shading, shadows and day-cycles? Gorgeous!

My friend, as can be in native 1080p? if the native resolution of the dreamcast games is 480p? the emulator creates pixels, like magic? all emulator uses upscaling, the dolphin, pcsx2 with null dc is no different What makes the appearance look good are the various types of filters applied, aa filters, texture filters, filters that make sharper graphics etc. I have not used the null dc, but I used a lot pcsx2 and dolphin

I still think that it is upscaling, a good upscaling can do miracles, is not just stretch the image upscaling just stretches the picture is crap and does not improve anything. but a good upscaling process and improves the image before sending it to the screen.

The dreamcast is still amazing the emulator does a good upscaling to 1080p and application of various filters that make the image look sharp. but it is not real 1080p because the native resolution of the dreamcast games is usually 480p.

This is not upscaled, it's on1080p, and no additional filters, only antialiasing.

MSR was ahead of its time. I was 4 when i played that in 1999. I remember having something called a 'boot disk' and having to put it in before playing some games i think my dreamcast was modded n shit lol

Because it was released 5 years later XD Still, when I play n64 or playstation games released in 1999 or later, I can't help feeling that they should have made those games for the Dreamcast instead. So much more potential. But then came the ps2, and later the Xbox, which delivered graphics unseen for anybody without a $1000 PC.

ps2 is seriously overatted graphic wise. it Always had very dark gra[phics and 2d games looked like shit on ps2. Xbox on the other hand had awesome graphics for it's time. that thing was a beast.

SalveMonesvol i'm not comparing xbox to a ps2 but i am saying that thing looked like something diffrent. ps2 was very like the dreamcast only lacked bump mapping textures. many still prefer the dreamcast it's graphics over ps2.

yeah and shenmue would be impossible on ps2 ;). heck shenmue 2 probably is one of the best looking games in the 6th gen. with the little the dc got it did allot,only it was there at the wrong time. it was just sitting there to be crushed by next gen. but sega went out with a bang,for those who don't know dreamcast i say buy one. it's as great if not greater then the n64. that ferrari game also shows a huge diffrence between ps2 and dreamcast,dreamcast handles bit and bump mapping better. i was a dreamcast guy,bought one dirt cheap and it was awesome,vf4 was even sheduled to be released but instead went ps2 exclusive. great game that showcases a cleaner look on ps2,vf4 is one of the best looking ps2 games i've seen.
