It made me so mad seeing how absolutely nobody picked up on the insane power of the Merling. As soon as you get a good supply of water breathing potions your only downside is gone, and you become a human who becomes a god when in water. And if anyone says "BuT hOw Do YoU gEt ThE pOtIoNs???" There are 3:00 water breathing potions in buried treasure chests. Find a few of them, go to a fortress, and get some blaze rods and nether wart. Done. If that's not enough, get a respiration 3 helmet. A turtle shell is good, but not needed. Now get some food with decent saturation, mainly steak and pork, maybe some gapples too, and just go. Saturation healing in Java is insane, and respiration reduces the frequency of drowning damage when you eventually run out of air. You don't even have to worry about mobs too much because diamonds are so easy for you to get in underwater caves that if you don't have full diamond in 30 minutes you're basically throwing. You can literally survive as long as you have food. Then once you have the potions, your only downside is gone. You hear that? Gone. The Merling is the only origin whose downsides can be ENTIRELY eliminated. That makes it at least better than everything other than Phantom, Enderian, Shulk, and Piglin (from the add-on pack that gives Inchling). Those four have good enough upsides to excuse their downsides. Fox comes close but the health drop is too much. (And as per usual Starborne is just broken and should not exist). Anyone who says Elytrian is good, your survivability is worse than Arachnid because you can't wear good armour, and you basically can't kill anything in caves or low-ceiling nether. It's alright, but Shulk does better as an elytra origin because you can have effectively full diamond (minus one protection enchantment) due to your natural armour bonus.
