I dunno why new developers always start with MMOs, besides trying to scam, many others are actually trying to make something but they just get lost. Why MMOs? Why not make a good single player game that is so much easy to develop and to distribution.

Skyrim, The Witcher 3. This are AAA games, I know, but they are not online, and are famous anyway. Also you missed the point of my comment. I am not saying to not make a MMO. I am saying that MMO should never be your first project. Get some experience in game development, then you may try something.

@@alissonlares2926 Not only that but there are OTHER genres which are barely getting filled. I mean since Command and Conquer faded into obscurity I'm sure there must be a market for a good Real Time Stratergy game, there's a niche but nobody is filling it atm.

Also, it's not like he is surrounded by gold bricks or 10,000$ guitars or something crazy like that. It's just games and while they are expensive and I'm sure there is a lot of them, it is entirely believable that pretty much anyone who likes games enough could have invested the money for a collection of this size.

A couple of years ago I was _almost_ tricked into buying a fake RTX card. For some reason when I try to explain how I got tricked, youtube immediately autoremoves my comment, so it's very hard to explain it (as a warning to others). I wonder if the youtube comment filtering system thinks I'm trying to scam people with a fake RTX card.

There are perfectly written scams out there, but usually they are just the second step in social engineering, by appealing to a shared superiority between peers

Some years ago I was almost fooled into purchasing a fake video card (of a model that apparently I cannot write here without the youtube filtering system immediately removing my comment, but the company name starts with an N, and the card model name is a three-letter acronym starting with an R, followed by a large number starting with 2), but I cannot write about it in youtube comments (as a warning on how the trick works) because the filtering system just keeps removing my comment. But yeah, it goes to show that even people who think they can detect such tricks sometimes can't.

If I had to guess (and that's the best you're going to get), I meant that maybe some of them have a certain charm to them for how they do things, but that there is nothing sexy about tricking people in order to steal from them. Like how maybe there are sexy coal miners, but there's nothing sexy about being a coal miner. The fact that you can make an action look sexy doesn't mean the action itself was ever sexy.

He's saying that although Dreamworld is more than likely a scam done out of malice, the majority of people who promise the world - or even just give A promise, may not be doing it because they're inherently bad people. So we should hold the death threats and harassment (not that that's appropriate anyway) because more than likely, the people/person just doesn't understand the sheer undertaking of what they're promising.

If a Kickstarter dev has shown no proof of the capability required to finish an MMO, can we call them a scam? How do we tell they are not trying to set up a scam?

@@gnerkus This same question could be asked about AAA devs and companies. We all call Fallout76 a bad project, and a crapshoot, but was it a Scam? They wanted our money, they promised a lot, they didn't deliver to a lot of people's standards. What about EA and Battlefront2?

FoM was great in its original incarnation, back in 2006-2007 - I can't say how the early 2010s version was, I never knew it came back, but I have fond memories of running with the Brotherhood of Shadows way back in the old days.

@@Dreznin Had a good start when it relaunched in 2009-2011 with large factions like the FDC and LED easily above 80-100+ players online at any time if I remember correctly. Sadly the games population dropped steadily as people got bored and it limped along with 3-10 active players per faction until it released on steam which gave a huge boost but there was just nothing there to keep players engaged but combat, production, and a cash shop so it quickly dropped again and she shutdown.

"Confidennce" meaing "a scam" comes from another scam even older than selling the Brooklyn Bridge. Certain Samuel (or William) Thompson (not to be confused with a lot of other notable ppl with the same name) was just strolling around New York chatting up rich guys (he was quite good at appearing as one of their set) then asked them if they have "confidence" to lend him something valuable, then just never talked to his new "friend" again. It didn't work _all that_ often, but it did often enough to prove being rich doesn't make you scam-proof.

@@doltBmB I guess it's all a matter of perspective. As I see it if you are running a company. That ran a kick starter and your project fails then you should at least incur as much loss as the people who's money you took. So if you have a nice home office you should have sold that home. If you are renting, or leasing, or own an office space you should have eliminated that expense or sold it for more capitol. It's not a matter how much money it is comperatively. It's a matter of getting to walk away without experiencing the same loss as the people you screwed over.

What an absolute shame it was, it wasn't outright drama bomb issues but... Buy to play and with a far too optimistically high price tag for the niche appeal/basic low grade graphics and assets... I'm sorry but when you're marketing a game where you have to level your death skill by finding new ways to die and have to grind cheesemaking. You have a curious demographic who might get it on a whim who are warded off by your near full price tag, and you have die hards who are used to being burned who see the smash and grab potential of the price and don't bother either. The flip floppy takes on the approach to the game development and moderation. IE: There are sexual contents/drug uses/hard language/prejudices present in NPC dialog and handling, but even jokingly being prejudiced against DEER (Yes, deer. As in the hoofy bleaty animal. And yes this far far predated the twitch drama) bore you a ban, and sometimes casual cursing such as "I'm sick of these GD spawns" would net you a moderator action. Inconsistent enforcement VS The actual game world as it stood even in character or roleplay. The utterly alienating approach to the playerbase, handling them past 3 layers of disconnect through CMs and Moderators and never ever addressing anything proper on the developer side. The "Hardcore but not" nature that couldn't decide if it were a free form sandbox or not, IE: You can get permanently cursed losing to a boss which makes your chances of defeating the boss or anything else much lower depending on the curse until you defeat the boss... But finding people after the community built in beta was sundered was a nigh impossibility.

When you were talking about old Face of Mankind, I originally thought you meant the old 2006-2007 FoM... I never played the "newer" one, but have fond memories of running with the Brotherhood of Shadows back in the original launch. Crafting drugs, selling them in shady locations to members of the "legit" factions... ahh, fun times.
