Dressage Disaster: Double Trouble - Blood Elimination For Ashley Holzer

Ashley Holzer and her ride on Valentine have been a hot topic here on Dressage Hub all season. When Valentine entered the ring in a state of terror the ride went downhill from there.

Ashley Holzer is back again in the Hot Seat with Hansel in the Lovsta Future Challenge class. Hansel entered the ring in a state of terror but Ashley Holzer managed to get the stallion owned by P.J Rizvi under control and carry on her way. Halfway through the test the dressage judge at E noticed blood in Hansels' mouth and alerted the judge at C.
In this video, you will see the judge at C come out and conduct an inspection. The challenge with blood in the mouth is that oftentimes you will see it in one moment and then it will be gone the next. The obvious reason being the horse has swallowed or drooled the blood onto the ground. Blood in the mouth is often not gushing from an open wound but often small and barely noticeable. This was a great catch by the judge at E.
You will see both the judge at C and Ashley Holzer shrug off the blood like they are unable to find it. While that may be the case by the time she walked over to the judge at C, it is also good PR to pretend that there was no blood and she has been wrongfully eliminated in front of the camera and VIP tent.
Having a full-time live stream this season has definitely made dressage a lot more interesting to watch. Celebrating the highs and lows with many of our favorite athletes has been a delight for those of us at home in the cheap seats.

Just get off the horse at this point. You’ve already lost when your not in a partnership with your horse. Dressage is about respecting each other as a partnership not a domination of the animal. Shame on Ashley.

This beautiful and loyal horse was so scared ....shame on the rider... Have the higher level riders forgotten that it's the love of the horses and that special connection we have with them that our passion for riding began.

That angers me too. The wins shouldn't be more important. I've seen this at dog shows too. A beautiful Irish Setter was terrified and cowering. She was manhandled into the ring crying. Bless the judge that called her handler and owner out.

Horse connection? That world is all about money they buy the best horse and let others train them. Most of these riders cant even ride without force pain and control. Thats not riding thats abuse

You could see that the moment she let the reins longer and let him walk after the check the horse could actually ‘breath’ and was not so tense in his body than before.

That poor horse, he looks scared out of his mind. I hate to make such a drastic assumption over one video but it really seems like hes being abused, and I wouldn't be surprised considering how so many riders treat their horses in upper level. His "spooks", the way he reacts to the bit and aids, and the fact that they were even checked for blood in the first place are so worrying.

Not really abused, those horses are very "hot", they would need a lot of soft training from the ground...and desensitization but dressage riders never do that

I saw no horsemanship and when the judges checks the bridle and the area of the spors for blood I was really angry about the rider.. Leaving I would have got of the horse and showed him the tent

At high level shows like this, horses are always 100% checked from head to toe and all equipment and medicine is highly regulated. It is unfortunate that he had some blood in his mouth but you can clearly see that this is a naturally tense horse and she is riding him as calm as she can be. Ashley would never dare to abuse a horse and it is appalling how you can make a snap judgement with what experience over something that is completely out of context. Shame on you.

Dressage as a sport yes, but dressage as it is supposed to be, as a way to help your horse to carry themselves right, so they have less problems with their bodies. So it's easier to carry us. To be soft, and flexible, to be able to communicate with as little as possible. That's what dressage is all about. Fame and money, always kills the real reason we do something..

You're right... But this dressage is a distortion of what it actually was. You have to refer to classic equitation. You can find some of its principles at the Spanish school of Wien... Watch those horses: soft, flexible, always round, head up, no rollkur, no hard mouthpiece or equipment to force the horse in a certain position. I really like it! But those riders train themselves for decades, something that sounds unacceptable for the most of "athletes"...

@@Sunburn2508 Yeah I visited Spain, and went to this facility where they were training and showing horses. It was okay to come and watch them exercise the horses.. And its the ugliest thing I have seen. Of those 4 riders, only 1 took the time to warm up and cool down the horse. And one of the horses, was ridden with its head to the side the whole time.. You know why? To build that big neck, they will ride them to one side, then the other side the next time.. 😔

@@Sunburn2508 - Totally agree - I use these principles with my horse. It's just sad and awful to see these riders push beyond the classical principles in the name of "winning..." My friends who are not dressage riders point to these outliers as the reason why they think "dressage is bad for horses" ...I have no valid defense when there are alleged "top riders" in the sport treating their animals like this....

I’m not advocating for this rider, she should have known better. Dressage is the basis for all riding disciplines though, even Western and Jumping use Dressage elements. There are bad apples, but Dressage is about the connection with the horse. She’s also being paid to ride that horse. Competitions are too stressful, I prefer clinics, where I can still have fun, be fancy and learn something new.

The horse is so tense. His unwillingness and tension is probably due to pain from the mouth. Also notice how the horse shakes his head. One thing I just don't understand is why the rider just keeps on forcing the horse. A rider, espescially on that level, must be able to understand when something is wrong with the horse. Besides, here it's so obvious that that's the case. Glad that the judges here took that decition.

My thought exactly! I can not for the life of me understand why any rider sensitive to their horse would not immediately voluntarily pull out of the competition before entering the ring! Clearly the horse was telling her that something was wrong! The horses mouth being open during the test obviously was a sign something was amiss.

his unwillingness and tension is most likely from a windy, scary environment- horses tend to chomp the bit when they are anxious and unfortunately sometimes bite their tongue or lip in the process. Horses even chomp and foam at the mouth with NO bit at all when they are this anxious. It's crazy windy out there!!!! It's too bad riders don't have more time to gain the horse's self confidence in the arena before entering.

@@dnr2089 actually yes you do, a horse ridden in a halter and lead rope that is 'through its back' relaxed and happy in the jaw WILL foam at the mouth without a bit!

When training your horse, your first job should be to teach and maintain relaxation. Don't push through braces; fix the brace, reestablish calm, then proceed. Or, just end the lesson right there on a positive note.

For me, it’s so important to end on a positive note. If it were my horse, I would have scratched when he started getting stressed near A, I wouldn’t make my girl enter the court that stressed and worried. Shows are about fun and the connection between horse and rider.

I think what is frustrating about it is that she got in a good portion of her ride before she was ever stopped. Watching the video, I can very clearly see the blood from the moment she entered the arena at 1:28. It's visible under the nostril and on the lower lip where the foam has gathered. This is why I don't like hearing riders excuse a horse foaming at the mouth because it "lubricates the bit". No, horses foam because you are over exerting the jaw and putting too much pressure on them. If a horse is drooling like that, it's because you are relying too heavily on your reigns for balance and the horse is learning to push aggressively through the pressure (and opening the jaw) -- which is why so many studies have shown injuries in the mouths of these animals. I understand that every horse is going to be trained differently and that, as a rider, you must learn to work with the horse... but at that point, as a rider, I would be arguing for a horse with better training than forcibly injuring them so that I could earn a cheap ribbon.

Chewing (mobility of the jaw) is an essential element for muscle relaxation. This fact is found in all the more or less ancient texts of classical riding (which has nothing to do with modern dressage). This chewing takes place by a light massage of the fingers on the reins, it can also be done with a simple fillet. Chewing produces foam of drool, which however must not be too abundant, and in addition must be dense. Many horses foam even when they eat an apple ... nothing comes with abuse. Chewing itself has nothing to do with bleeding, which must have occurred for other serious reasons

@@zizzipaola2606 There is a difference between natural foam (lipstick foam) that comes from relaxation chewing vs. the excessive foaming (flying foam) that you typically see in modern competitive riding. Yes, horses do naturally chew and lick their lips as releases of tension and to swallow excess saliva that has built up within their mouths - however, excessive build ups of saliva (as shown in this video) usually come from overworking the bit and excessive levels of stress. While I agree that not all foaming is a sign of abuse, it is good to recognize when a horse is exhibiting very unnatural or an overabundance of behaviors that would not normally be seen without a rider attached. I also just want to take a moment to recognize that apples are a poor example of "foaming" naturally as apples have microscopic air pockets that burst as they are chewed and cause the juice to bubble as it is filled with this release of air (note that foam forms even when humans eat apples).

Beautiful horse. Perhaps pushed too hard early on - there is no relaxation. You can definitely see how unhappy he is in his mouth from the beginning. I'm so glad they stopped the test.

She is VERY heavy with her hands. This horse is working it's mouth the whole time to get away from that pain. No wonder that horse had blood in it's mouth. I'm happy the rider was eliminated from the ring.

I do not care for her riding at all, all force and no compassion from what I saw in the videos. Why does she not try to settle the horse and then proceed. If I was an owner she would not be allowed anywhere near my horse. Why ride with spurs on a such a spirited horse, my fellow goes fine without them, you can get tempi changes without them. Great call from the Judge at E.

@@animallover4101 I still stand by my opinion, Canada can keep her. I have the privilege to know ParaOlympic riders who ride better, one of was my trainer she had suffered a severe leg injury, no excuses for poor horsemanship. Times are changing, USEF shows offering FEI tests allow a snaffle bridle. I think it would be better for the sport if they were dropped spurs too. Too easy for callous people to cause harm with them the bloody and furless sides I have seen from show hunters and dressage people. A well-trained horse should move off the leg. I understand the original purpose of spurs, Wellington made great use of them at Waterloo. But we don't still have swords slung from the saddle. I would petition for a change to voluntary, they changed the top hat rule.

My horse had a very sensitive mouth that split so easily. When we were out hacking we had a horrible accident with a gate and as we went through the gate shut on us so he ran back but the reins got looped over the handle. He pulled back in panic, reared and broke his reins and bridle, cut his mouth and fell over. No matter what I did or how much time he had with nothing in his mouth if I pulled even the tiniest amount in split open and started bleeding. As a consequence I developed very light hands! At the time a few people really had a go at me and assumed I'd done it by being rough.

The horse entered with so much foam at the mouth. It's a horror show what they are subjected to. The hypocritical nonchalant patting of the horse while it's clearly going out of it's mind, is a nice touch.

Yes, that was absolutely sickening. Notice how the horse throws its head, like it doesn't want a stupid pat nor anything at all from her except release from those shitty bits and spurs and for her to get the hell out of the saddle. Poor poor horse.

With so much rider ego invested its unfathomable and an insult that their horse lets them down, some sort of punishment ensues without doubt. It would be a joyous day if all competing simply stopped. This horse is not a happy camper & should be given some R & R to regain his sanity. You can only push any animal (be horse or human or whatever) so far before a mental meltdown. It appears the trainer attempted to just use stronger aids rather than finding the root cause to the behavior problems. I just hope this guy isn’t totally and permanently blown.

Poor creature. Trying in vain to accept that cheese string cutting through him. He was painfully obviously desperate for the judge coming towards him to release the pain, darting his head towards him. This makes me think of how we sometimes don't realize how tensely, unharmoniously and hard a horse is ridden before it changes rider. Maybe due to privilege and status on the part of the rider. But look at how reborn, light and content Blue Hors Zack looks with his new female rider compared to how he looked under Daniel Backmann Andersen. What a difference.

Poor thing was napping and not wanting to go in the arena as soon as she picked him up. She is pulling the reins so much his mouth is open. Then even in the first halt he opens his mouth even wider because she's pulling back even more. You don't need to to that to halt!

Truly “happy athletes.” These horses know to fear the ring. Look at him gaping his mouth, the spurring on every stride, the way he’s having his head held. Is it any wonder that he didn’t want to go in there? It really strikes me how their behaviour changes in the ring. Time and time again you see horses who throw a fit and then as soon as they’re in the ring, it’s all in the ears and tail. They try so hard to do exactly what they’ve been forced to do over and over again for years, and to me it speaks volumes about what happens at home during training when they try to communicate inside the arena like they do outside it when they refuse to enter. They know that messing up inside the ring is a big mistake. They’re just taught helplessness. Don’t even try to escape. It won’t work.

Genuine though possibly ignorant question from an amateur: are top dressage horses not trained specifically to handle stressful situations? In this video it's clearly very windy and I can easily believe the spooking is genuine, and of course horses can be unpredictable no matter their training, but it seems I always see some spooky/fearful/undesirable behavior every time I watch dressage videos (and it's usually upper levels that I can watch through FEI etc). Are they just expected to adapt to show environments in time? Are high strung animals just the price paid for expressive potential?

Very good questions! I was thinking the exact same thing. I think this horse is in a lot of pain which is why it's so reactive. A horse that is free of pain with a soft, gentle rider is not going to react as much to these things. This is why you see it so much in the upper levels compared to the lower levels. The overuse of harsh bits, spurs, BTV, tension etc etc causes this

Classic example of a rider trying to please her sponsors/owners (horse) over the welfare of the horse. Every decent rider has had a moment when they chose to retire, rather than risk the horse. Shame.

Competition is so important, that almost all competitors push through and force the horse to continue to compete!! I would love to see someone just take the time to go on a long rein and walk all over the arena and walk out. That person would be my hero! I want to see people that truly care about their horses. Maybe I’m dreaming. 😢

The horse was already foaming from the bit and spooking before she started. When collecting is all about relaxing . She is constantly hitting her horse with her spurs. Collection is your seat and soft leg soft hands.

Horses are are fight or flight creatures..... it’s one thing to push your horse through when he’s not sure or resisting..... every rider at one stage has had to put the boot in when trying to cross a small body of water etc. Then there is one thing to know when to quit I have called it quits many times especially in windy conditions. I could care less what people think about me. Keeping a horse confident and also both of us safe, including marshals and people moving the arena at A is more important than a test! When the horse looked like he good have endangered the rider or the 2 A arena volunteers the judge should have the right to bell the combination out. Safety for everyone including the horses!

I’m looking at the environment around him. There’s lots of flapping and no doubt noisy bunting around the ring. There was something near that tent at the entrance he did not like at all.

Dressage is doing itself a huge mistake and an injustice to the horses when you see this stuff going on time & again. A definite problem is the big money involved pushes trainers to do the expedient thing not the right thing.

A Hunter here- Do dressage riders not point their toes when “doing” cues or is this just how the cues are done? I genuinely don’t know and it’s probably a stupid question.

Maybe some of you people should have a chance to get on this horse and let Ashley evaluate your riding under the same circumstances. The horse was afraid of the silver curtain flapping in the wind. Maybe he hurt his mouth while shying. The blood rule is necessary but it isn’t always fair. Blood in the mouth or on the belly can be accidental for anyone. Can any of you ride a Grande Prix test? Would love to see you on RU-vid.

He’s not a happy chappy and not being ridden well… it was one of the first things i was taught. I also got told off for bad saddle and tight reins… sure way to piss a horse off. The fact that they stopped her for blood tests says it all 😤😲🙁

Listen to your horse, Pay attention. As a retired professional rider/competitor/trainer, including wild Mustangs, donkeys, mules and pretty much every breed out there, and having ridden several thousand horses, how is it even possible the rider didn't know the stress/pain this horse was under? Is she that unaware? It is clear to a beginner. Shame on her for forcing this on a horse who deserves better. This magnificent being didn't deserve this treatment. Look at that foaming mouth. That is pain. Look at that reluctance to do his "job." That is pain.

These poor horses are being placed in a pressure cooker. Think about it, they are being constantly spurred (the signal to GO), while at the very same time being reined in (signal to STOP) to the max....just look at the type of bit, a head position that is totally flexed, if not overflexed, with heavy saliva and foam from the mouth. Like driving a car with the accelerator down while at the same time applying the brakes!!! The horse is being given totally mixed signals, strongly, while being asked (commanded?) to perform at tip-top levels. The stress is enormous. Dressage is asking more and more of these horses, which is why we are seeing so many dressage disasters in the last year or so. The horses are simply saying "Too much, I've had enough". When are folks going to listen?

Looks like the horse may train in a perfect, quiet environment at home... It was having a hard time that day with basic things outside the ring. The rider should have exused when the horse was losing it outside the ring. The money is wasted either way, best to not get in trouble with fei.

I wonder if these dressage horses ever get to go out on a relaxing trail ride where they're not asked to perform, just walk on a loose rein. Otherwise, I'd think they'd begin to associate the rider and saddle with extreme pressure and stress. The horse is not hurting anywhere visible (I admit that I can't see any blood in the beginning on my small screen) but suddenly starts spooking at normal things around a show arena...this isn't drugging you normally test for but I'd recognize a vitaminB12 overload anywhere and and this looks to be one. These horses don't go this high in tbe ranks without good training and good riders in the past. A show rider of any rank shouldn't depend on a 'high' of any sort in a horse, not even a natural one. Was a blood test done?

Collection should be able to be done on a loose rein otherwise it’s the rider’s insecurity. I know dressage needs to have upmost collection, but I’d honestly love to see one dressage rider collect on a loose rein.. I’ve watched these mishaps of the horses not wanting to move forward, let go of their damn faces! People want to talk crap about reining horses but yet, they can ride on a loosely draped rein with collection as needed. Willingly guided through maneuvers. I’ve done reining patters on draped reins with collection as needed, with the horse willingly move forward, not back and rear. 🤷‍♀️

I don't get it, why wouldn't she prioritise working with her horse's fears, reducing triggers and helping him to be calm as a top priority? For both the benefit of the horse and her own ambitions. Horses can't learn when they're stressed out anyway, so it makes no sense to not ensure they're as relaxed as possible. My instructor believes that below "Rhythm" on the training scale, there is actually "Relaxation" - it's the most fundamental part of working with a horse in any discipline. They need to feel safe, especially as a herd prey animal. They need to know that you, as their leader, has their back. Most people get into equestrian sports because they enjoy working in partnership with an animal and to me it makes no sense to take shortcuts like rollkur that cause all sorts of problems rather than just doing it properly from start to finish. It's not only a shitty experience for the horse but the results are INVARIABLY better when the horse's wellbeing is treated as paramount. And I suspect the blood was caused from the horse behaving like he did before entering the arena (due to high anxiety), and her pulling hard on the reins in response. Working on making him feel good would have not only produced a better test, it would have most likely prevented the bleeding and subsequent elimination. Why do people spend so much time and money on suboptimal and harmful training methods? Why pay a likely large fee to train with Sjef Janssen when there are so many other trainers out there who encourage the horse to work from a foundation of feeling good in the first place, and who will then get you better results anyway?
