Dressage Masterclass with Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin 

This is wonderful. A grand prix horse that is actually working over its back from the hind end, relaxed and supple. And at the 9:29 when she lets him stretch and he easily goes down and out and is still relaxed, fabulous.

Carl Hester is one of the few people who can communicate effectively, a lot of good riders cannot put into words what they are doing , or what the horse is doing , let alone feeling .......I could listen to that lesson for hours .

Once you hear about the marshmallow cream/fluff, you can't unsee it.

I struggle to see how anyone can say she is too tight in her hands, they are constantly moving, she gives one way, then the other. The horse is tight because it’s in a big arena environment so it’s hot. Watch her hands, she pushes them forward all the time to check the self carriage. The spurs are lightly tapping the horse for instructions. If you call this bad riding then I would love to see what you think good riding is

This is a great trio - definitely worth watching and learning from. Always a pleasure to see this sort of skill, talent, and tact in horsemanship.

She is using her spur as an existential of the leg and has a very nice seat and is not ridged at all. She is centerd on her horses back and looking dow isn't bad as long as your head isn't tipped. Before you say oh I could do better. Beat them in a show. Before you say something prove your point. She not a top rider for nothing. If the horse was tense he would not have performed his movement with ease and forward. Her hands are light but there to support. Before you say cut the reins off and see what happens how about we do that to you.

Keith, troll or not, has some valid points. There is no lightness, which is what I have thought for over 40 years was something we should strive for. She does seem heavy on the reins. Why the spurs on every stride? It's not for lack of leg control. She is purposley goading him on every stride. The horse is almost constantly behind the vertical throught the pirouette. The piroeutte also does not meet FEI standards. "...executed on two tracks, with a radius equal to the length of the horse and the forehand moving around the haunches." By definition that means he smaller the circle the closer to the ideal. I suppose I am getting old. I long for the days of Stuckelburger, Klimke, Boldt and Jaap Pot in the a judge's seat. Every thing seems to have changed when the dollar became strong against the mark and any one who had any money, me included flocked to Germany an Holland to buy horses. I have no idea what a top flight horse costs now but I remember top young prospects going for hundreds of thousands of dollars at Kasselman's slaes and elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I love Charlotte ! But is it just me or the angle of the camera.. I think Barolo is not going straight on the long sides. His haunches are bent to the inside. I don't know if that's actually what she wants or if the horse just isn't straight. Having a straight horse is basics of dressage.

Charlotte does not need a human trainer. She just works with her horse: feeling and doing what he horse says.

Keith is not a troll! My partner has always said that she was too rigid in her arms up and through the shoulders, hands not soft and pliable, making a very rigid upper body and neck with head looking down instead of ahead and yes, too much spur.

Self carriage? Cut the reins? It used to be called "riding on the buckle".

Wondering when and how this horse can do all this in SELF CARRIAGE on released reins? Take a pair of scissors to those reins and snip them, the horse would fall apart. This style of riding is why the spur is constantly poking the flanks in rhythm with the canter, into a restraining hand. Its called riding Between Hand and Leg.....or in other words a "controlled compression" of the horses body and is also "Maintenance" aiding. Collection is therefore obtained through tension and NOT relaxation and by definition is a False Collection. True Collection is asked for, and the horse OFFERS it. It should not be forced onto the horse. Horses can in fact do ALL this work and more complicated stuff on "released reins" without ANY Apui"" (French for "Push"....as in the horse pushing onto the reins) at all if you train them to carry themselves in True Self Carriage.The Flash nicely tight as in this video, will prevent the horse "chewing" on the bit as in a Flexion of the Jaw (a la Baucher) which is a "swallowing" action of the tongue. similar to grazing grass which is a VERY relaxing thing for a horse to do. Prevent this, and poke at the flanks with those spurs will eventually irritate the horse enough to find an evasion or worse. The snaffle is therefore a great "tool" to teach the horse to "lean" on the hand (otherwise known as contact!) Suggest A Baroque Cavesion coupled with a Weymouth,( no horse in its right mind will lean on the Curb) to start a young horse with before removing the Baroque Cavession and replacing it with the Bridoon Bit. That way the horse never learns that it can lean on the Snaffle bit, which is why it was invented in the first place by the racing industry some 150 yrs ago, before then La Guérinière (Inventor of the Shoulder in and all lateral work etc. that we use today.....) only used the Baroque Cavesson and Curb.

The horse isn't comfortable; it's frothing at the mouth. I suppose, though, that doesn't really matter.
