Clothes really help with a person's sense of self. I love the almost ritualistic process of dressing during the Victorian and Middle ages. It must of added to your sense of self and belonging. I would definitely feel more regal in that attire, and more invested into my clothing and presentation. It's hard to put into words what I am trying to say. I hope it translates well.
@priorattire
@priorattire 4 года назад
I think it depended on an individual. I don’t do rituals, so I dress as fast as I can, and with minimum fuss, irrespective of the era I am dressed in. Others make it into and art- I am just too oragmaticB
@maureenkelly738
@maureenkelly738 4 года назад
I can see how you can think that. There’s a definite rhythm to getting dressed if you were able to have good clothing. Those of a lesser stature do what many of us do when we are running late. We dress in comfortable clothing in a hurry. For those having to dress “corporate”. There’s a bit more involved of course, including a makeup routine. But I digress. I enjoy watching films where clothing is an important part of setting the scene. The dressing scene in Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” said everything about the atmosphere of the stifling French Court in the 1770’s and ‘80’s. The series I particularly like is done by CrowsEyeView on RU-vid. Ig gives historical context to the clothing and the era in which they were worn. The vids of Prior Attire are fascinating as well. They show what goes into getting dressed in the given era, and how it changed from one generation to the next. Very informative and fun to watch.

Beautifully exquisite outfit, and very informative video! I have to admit I had always assumed that there were layers of lacy, ruffled, petticoats much like in 19th century gowns. I never thought it would just a few plain layers, it looks so elaborate in paintings!

I'm not sure if this is too weird or not, but I am genuinely curious. would it be possible to try to dress in an outfit with a corset as a pregnant lady? as in, how exactly did women of the older days of history, specifically upper class women, dress in elegant clothes and where basically required to wear some form of corset yet where also pregnant? (there are plenty of options of fake pregnant bellies on the market and tutorials of how to make your own too!) I'm not entirely sure of a specific date, but a video covering how people dressed in corsets and pregnant bellies would be quite fascinating

So bustly! I'm starting to grow fond of the 1780s. Is this the decade where the silhouette shifted from the hips emphasized by panniers to the backside? And where they fluffed and powdered their own hair instead of wigs? I feel like the silhouette changed gradually when looking at the each decade of the 18th century. And all of us assumed that the century were all big wigs and panniers. Thanks for this video and your channel for breaking down these assumptions and providing insight to how women dressed back then. Also, fitting music with "A Little Night Music", as Mozart composed this in the 1780s.

False. Some eras placed fullness at the hips hoping to achieve a perfecty flat backside, or had draped fabric from the shoulders to hide the booty. A tiny waist has been in fashion since Roman times ended but the booty comes in and out of favor.

I was just wondering, in this dress, there are only 2 skirts total, one petti and one as the main dress, whereas in previous styles there has been at least 3, several petti and the main dress, with options to add them. Now I realize more skirts are needed to hide the ridges of cages or for warmth or to add that extra oomph, but here is the lack of extra skirts due to the bottom padding and the bunching of the skirt? Was this just the evolution of style towards a more slim and natural body, so less oomph was needed all around?

Well, the noble lady's main duty was to provide her husband with a heir. So, unless she has managed to do it with the first-second pregnancy, she could spend half of her life being pregnant: 5-10 daughters, no sons yet, still keep trying.... So,- that was her job.

@@feralbluee Well, if I understand correct, the main idea was to have at least two sons,- a heir and "a spare heir" - reserve, so to say. Because if father passes away and leaves no sons, both the title and big part of the estate, bound to the title, would go to the next male relative, and widow and possible daughters would have to leave their home and survive somewhere on the small allowance. So it was in interests of lady's herself to get a son. But, you know, genetics... In some families only daughters were born year after year after year.
