Thank you for this video. I got one of these at a thrift shop a couple of months ago but could not figure out from the directions included with it how to use it. Your video shows the setup and use perfectly!

How do I grind the drill bit on the countersink setting without the attachment hitting the grinding wheel? It works perfect on the other setting. Thank you.

These are good sharpening jigs. It is a smaller version of an industrial size used in shops a good while back, as our machine shop had one. You do have it set up correctly, in that you do sharpen on the side of the wheel, and not the front. The only problem I saw was you were maybe taking to big of a bite at once. We were taught to bump the bit lightly, until it went all the way over, and take a little cut at a time, to keep the heat down, so you don't ruin the temper in the bit.

Good to watch one of these in use. I have a plastic variant of it by Craftsman and can't figure out how to get it to go down the toilet (probably need a larger opening in the toilet). Got it 25+ years ago and gave up on it, then recently tried again. Theirs actually rotates the bit and simultaneously moves inward to cut the relief, but there's too much plastic and play in the parts. I think they may have caught on and switched to the General style later. I still have hopes for the jig/grinder method and can't justify one of the larger dedicated sharpeners. I figure I probably just picked a dud. I'm going to look at these General types and try to pick whatever looks best. There's a bunch of people offering that style now. -Thanks!

These are by far the best type, but you don't play around with the rear adjustment after you've done one side mate, it MUST stay the same, just make sure you get a fine stone, and yes, a bit at a time , otherwise you'll temper it which weakens the drill bit, you'll know it when the tip turns black/blue, just keep sharpening until it silver again.

What is the distance from the grinder and how do you determine the degree angle on the pivot that starts from CSK? 49° to 88°? This info would be extremely useful to myself and others without a user manual. unless you are just showing the rest of us how awesome you are in which case OOOOOOOOHH LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS GUY IS EVERYONE! i used exclamation andall caps so u know I'm in awe of your superior testosterone levels. Why the hell don't people listen. A grinding wheel was never ever designed to grind anything against the sides of the wheels. It's all about safety. People all over the world design all sorts of gadgets for one purpose - TO MAKE MONEY! They are not going to tell you not to grind on the sides of the wheels. Have you seen a wheel explode? Carry on grinding on the side of the wheels and you will find out. If you want to use one of these gadgets on the "side" of a wheel, fit a cup wheel and then use your gadget!

A mi me costó solo 13 dólares USA.

I think your taking way to deep of a pass. Putting to much heat into the fine cutting tip and making a divot faster on your wheel.
@Zeljko_Mostar
@Zeljko_Mostar 10 лет назад
Not bad, but handling with it could be dangerous ..... Also, long time ago (more than 10 years), "Bosch" made better tool for this purpose .....In this case you must have both: the tool and grinder (how many people have ginder at home ?), but for Bosch tool you only need to have electric drilling machine ( almost everybody have it at home !) .... But generaly, this is not bad tool, it can be useful ...

You're not really supposed to grind on the side of a wheel like that.
@grumpus27
@grumpus27 4 года назад
It's probably OK for touching up a dull bit. I wouldn't do any heavy grinding on the side of the wheel - apart from anything else the motor bearings aren't designed to resist axial load.
@1clnsdime1
@1clnsdime1 10 лет назад
Looks like it did a good job but its supposed to be mounted in front of the grinding wheel. You will have a wheel failure if u keep grinding on the side
@bartz118
@bartz118 8 лет назад
Actually in the instructions it says to use it that way. There is another video on the same tool and the guy was reading the instructions and there was also a note that state. "Even though the grind wheel states to never use it on the side it does not apply to this tool"
@machfiver753
@machfiver753 6 лет назад
Because what? Hahaha don't use common sense this tool wrote about his tool. damn he must have hired johnny Cochran and the gang to fend off the slew of Walters that filed suit being sans an eye and four teeth after the wheel exploded
@rlwieneke-cf3xq
@rlwieneke-cf3xq 6 лет назад
the manual states: "When side-grinding, always use a grinding wheel that is specifically designed and approved for that purpose."
@f.d.6667
@f.d.6667 5 лет назад
@@bartz118 ... The correct use of the set-up is determined by the manufacturer of the grinder (type of bearings) and, more importantly, of the grinding wheel - NOT by the maker of a cheap gadget. Grinding wheels for lateral use (like in this video) have a special "pot" shape and a reinforced base. So, if you want to use it the wrong way - like in this video - you need to invest in a "pot" type wheel - which can be sintered/ceramic, a composite set-up of full-metal with either cubic boron or diamonds as grinding particles.
@f.d.6667
@f.d.6667 5 лет назад
@@rlwieneke-cf3xq ... here you go. Totally agree. There is no free lunch: cheap attachment & expensive wheel or cheap grinding wheel and a complex (solid) drill sharpener...

Thank you very much Old man : )
@oldman1505
@oldman1505 9 лет назад
I will start with the most common problem I have seen. The base of the sharpener has a slotted hole, to adjust how far away from the grinding wheel it is mounted. The little tang you can see it his thumbnail that holds the drill from turning, has to be set to half the diameter of the drill away from the grinding wheel. loosen the 2 screws that hold it and make sure it does not pick the drill up from its cradle. other than that what you see in this video is pretty good. Don't jam it in to the grinding wheel, take a little at a time. If the distance away from the grinding wheel is not set right, the chisel point wont be at 90degrees, and the relief angle will be off. Hope that makes sense, and helps you out.
@oldman1505
@oldman1505 9 лет назад
You can mount it on either side, but I would work the drill in from the back of the flute to the cutting edges
@jidissafi7413
@jidissafi7413 6 лет назад
Every time I've read up on drill sharpeners, I see people swearing they're junk, but then see comments like Old Man's from people who seem to know what they're doing. I think it's just a cheap enough solution that it ends up in the hands of people from both ends of the spectrum, some of whom either may not have the experience or may not have the patience to get it set up properly and figure out what not to do with it.
