i use those casters in my shop, and i have found that adding some angle or bar stock to tie the left/right casters together makes it work better. you step on the bar and both wheels deploy/retract at the same time. also makes it easier to reach the "rear" casters in a situation like this.

Hi Bob & Crew - I think you should start a bits series maintaining tools. Anything from how to keep small hand tools sharp and in good shape, to ensuring your cabinet table saw is dialed in and properly cleaned.
@That_NRD
@That_NRD 3 года назад
A thought occurred while seeing you use the casters, but I would probably weld a small metal bar between the 2 casters on either side that would lift/lower both of them at the same time for efficiency.

I’ve been watching you for years now. You and a bunch of other woodworking RU-vidrs. Mostly for fun as I’ve never made anything with wood before. I’m a 20 year old girl who recently graduated college (electrical engineering major) and now that I’m about to start work as a full time electrical engineer next month, I’m starting to think maybe I should begin practicing some of these projects myself. I have the time now and the income to explore this mini hobby that I’ve been intrigued by for years. Hope to have my very own home mini shop full of equipment one day! So I just want to say thank you! For helping me discover a love for something I never would have thought I had.

If you made the "drawers" a little bit smaller, you could use the inside of the door to store some things. Rob

Quick tip: if you dont have a Dado-stack/blade, you could make the inner sides out of T-111 siding (the deep-groove kind) and then you'd have your evenly spaced slots for sliding shelves in and out and all the mill work is done for you!!

Nice job! A long time ago, I repurposed an island cart for the kitchen to a drill press stand and accessory storage. Like you, I organize accessories near the tool for which they are used (Miter saw station with storage for jigs, templates, etc). Your video showed me how much better a job I could do with better thought to a solution. My drill press cabinet/stand is n ow near the top of my to-do list. Thanks..

Nice work Bob! I would like to see you attach a connecting rod between the wheels on each side so that you only have to flip the levers twice instead of four times to move the cabinet. Or better yet, a single point in the front so all it would take is one step to raise and lower the casters. Thank you for sharing.
@nedsurf1876

Its a good use for the space. Since I also frequently drill metal, I'd add place a steel pail below the table through hole to catch shavings and cutting fluid. I also see you like those magnetic tool bars for your screwdriver collection. I currently use one in a drawer for my loose drill bits that are not in an index like those spade bits you have sitting loose on one of those shelves. It keeps them organized when sliding the drawer out and in.

This is a really cool project! I think I accidentally recreated these casters for one of my projects, though. I found some push-pull toggle clamps with bolt threads on the active end, found some threaded casters of the same size, screwed the caster stems into the clamps, and mounted them upright on some post blocks to make a rolling drum stand that sat flush on the ground when it was lowered. Wishing I had just found these things now...
@BaconDanish
@BaconDanish 3 года назад
Build tip for improvement would be to countersink the hinges flush and run the edgeband over the hinges. That way you would have a cleaner look, if not overall, then on the cabinet doors. Otherwise it is a nice build.

I love this and need this. Only difference is that my drill press is a table top. I am going to modify this a little and build extra support in the middle so I can bolt my drill press to the top of it. This way I can roll my drill press out of the way when I don't need it. Huge deal in a small shop. Thanks.

Hi Bob. I love the unit. 👍🏻 The only difference I would suggest is to build what you have done but.... 1. Top board must be sticking out by the thickness of the door unit. 2. Remove the top section by an inch or so from the door. Thus the door is sunken under the top board. My reasoning is to avoid an open mm. on the top between the top board and the door.... I have noticed that by not having a gap prevents dust from getting in. Other than that... ❤️ The unit.

Looks great as always Bob. I had an idea which I thought might be useful: if you were to fasten one end of a strap to the top of the yellow drill bit case and the other end to the top of the cabinet, it would automatically open the case when you slide the shelf out (and should close as it does now when you push it back in).

Great, simple project, Bob, that fits my needs exactly~!! I have several of the Dewalt bit sets in cases and they're just stacked up around my drill press. So annoying~! I use the same type casters in my shop. I only have a couple sets since they're a bit pricey, but I buy the quick-release caster plates and mount them on things that move around the shop. Easy to pop them on & then off when needed. As for shelf arrangement within the cabinet, I'm thinking about drilling shelf pins for max flexibility. Not sure if you considered that and ruled it out. Just a thought... Thanks for sharing~!

How do you keep the shelves from falling out when you pull them out to get the bits in the very back. Just really careful? I think I might end up pulling them too far and then the whole shelf comes out and my bits would fall all over the place. I know dressers sometimes have that little hook on the bottom that catches the front, is that something that might work (of course you would need the front piece across the whole shelf too)? I don't know, what do you think? I just started with wood and made my workbench following some plans from The Weekend Woodworker. Thanks for the awesome work, I love your videos!
