How To Make A Mobile Drill Press Stand

I built a new DIY drill press stand using a tricky lifting mechanism for the casters. Having a small shop means I need my tools to be mobile. My drill press had long been on a quick and janky stand I built for it and I really didn't like how much wasted storage space there was underneath it, not to mention the giant pain individual locking casters are. So I fixed those problems with a new design and build. This video shows how I made it.

After recently building a crosscut sled off of RU-vid, I feel your pain over simple mistakes. I appreciate that you left yours in this video, especially when you showed us what we could do to fix those mistakes. My crosscut sled doesn't look as good as the one I tried to copy, which highlighted my own shortfalls in these first steps into woodworking.

I recently saw this video while researching retractable casters. Great refinement of Carl Holmgren's design. I like the sliding vs rotating pedal latch, as well as the retaining strips for securing the mechanism. I think this design will become a standard component of every tool stand I'm about to make. One feature I'd like to find is a simple push-push latching scheme. Many thanks for the video!

Nice take on the tilting caster concept, especially with the tapers on each end of the lever to optimize the travel. Have you found rocking them from angled to straight under load a lot, prematurely wears the swivel bearings or introduces any looseness affecting the swiveling? Also, great video quality and editing. Plus the relatable mistakes, and good ideas for correcting them. Earned my sub. Cheers!

was going to build some shit, think i might get one of them there kregg pocket drill set. dowels dovetails, all those tools need to be put away, not to mention take them out and set them up. changing over dado blades. had to tear apart some cabinets, made this way, they are pretty tough. good enough for a drillstand.

Mr. Backster I'm digging the candid and honest assessment! I personally really love my pocket hole jig (might even invest in a better one) and see it being a valuable shop tool. I JUST put out a video showing how you can add dowels (or biscuits/dominos) to pocket joints to make them stronger and easier to align that you might want to check out.

Sprinkle a small amount of fine salt after applying glue to stop the boards sliding around before you clamp them down. It works very well and the salt dissolves. You could use saw dust instead but it leaves more of a noticeable line as it does not dissolve.

Damn, I could make that. All I need is a: * Table saw * Band saw * Router * Belt sander * New drill/driver to replace my 17 year old worn out 14v one Can probably do without the Pocket Hole jog * A plane that isn't a _made in India_ piece _of out of square_ crap (despite spending about 20 hours sanding a finish and trying to get the heel and toe sort of flattish using a box trailer's worth of various grit paper * Some longer F-type clamps * A drill press * A new garage to put all the new purchases. * A second mortgage to pay for the plywood during the COVID-19 wood fibre inflation price times Nice mobile stand for the drill press. 👍

You know, this has actually been on my mind lately. As I invest in better and better tools I KNOW I'm going to be getting more comments like this. Which makes me want to dial it back and use less expensive tools....but if you have a better tool or access to better tools and more efficient methods why not take advantage? Best thing I could come up with is I should try to throw the occasional "only using ___ tools!" video into my regular content. Because dammit, I'm not about to hand dimension my lumber for EVERY video when I have a perfectly good jointer/planer combo in the shop 😂

Not a fan of dado blades. In EU they are not even able to be fitted due to safety hazard anx that our machines need to be at a full stop in a few seconds. EU rules are strict but oow well safety first. And also no need to change the blades then right, multiple passes work just as well. Great build. :-)
