Just a tip when using most router and ESPECIALLY a trim router: no matter the bit, when the intended depth is the entire available cutting capacity of the bit blades, MAKE MULTIPLE PASSES! never blow through your material in a single full depth pass. It will burn your work, overheat and warp/damage the bit and is also dangerous. Larger routers with more power can handle it (usually) on bits with a 1/2” shank no problem though it’s a waste of the life of a bit. But on 1/4” shank bits though available in almost the same size cutting surface as a 1/2” shank bit, IS DANGEROUS in full depth cuts! Take multiple passes. The cut should feel and sound smooth and consistent when cutting. If you’re hearing and feeling chattering, your cut is either to aggressive for the router, the bit or both. Thanks for the review and be safe folks!

What an EXCELLENT review! You not only covered the unwrapping, but actually demonstrated (for us newbies) how to put it together! And you actually showed how well the router performs using a couple of different bits. You also covered the safety precautions that we must take when using the tool and so much more! If I had listened to another reviewer's video, I would have never purchased this router! From the very beginning, he was totally negative about everything regarding this little tool! And he didn't even take the time that you did to properly demonstrate how it really works, yet he said he did not recommend it at all, that it was a total waste of money! So I want to thank you so very much for your great review because after watching you, I went ahead and purchased the router at Harbor Freight, and I'm super happy with it! It does everything I need it to do for me! THANK YOU!

Been woodworking for about 5yrs. Made loads of signs in my early days, using a good second hand router. It was a big double handed beast with the power button on the right hand handle. Apart from the weight and size of the darn thing, carving 1" letters, you're thumb would cramp up BUT I kept using it for all this time thinking "Oh well this the way it has to be" Until today my son in law gave me a Black an decker trim router.....Set it all up, carved a couple of "sentences" and it was heaven...like carving butter with a sharpe pencil !!! Thanks for great vid and some super tips. It came without fence. But I've tried loads of tools with the fences and could NEVER get on with any of them. Subbed !

Nice to see someone who ACTUALLY knows how to use a router do a review of this! All the other videos I've seen the goofs are running them in the wrong direction (Clockwise) and then they complain that there's too much tear out and it's a piece of junk blah blah. It's like well if you actually knew how to use it I'm quite sure it would work just fine lol. Like the old saying goes A poor craftsmen blames his tools. So thank you so very much for making this video! I'm definitely going to pick this up to replace the $250 Makita trim router kit that was stolen by some scumbag junkie from my home along with 10k+ worth of tools I amassed over the past 30 years. Much appreciated👍

I'm a firm believer in the fact that you don't go to Harbor Freight for parachutes, scuba gear. condoms or whatever you must depend on as they generally hit a 95% functional level on most products they sell. This too might be the exception. I take exception to their advice about bottoming out the bit in the collet. If the collet ever becomes stuck in the armature shaft you'll be forced to pry the router bit out of the unit which will likely damage the cutting edges. I would suggest leaving a small amount of space below the bit so if it ever becomes stuck, a light whack on the end of the bit with a chunk of wood will dislodge it so it can be removed. Putting an "o" ring on the bit shaft makes it easy to locate a good depth and also eliminates the need to hold the bit while tightening. Don't forget to clean the collet and related parts so you can avoid the problem in the future.

Agreed. I think HF gives you a good value most of the time and they generally don't quibble on a warranty return so there is no real risk in trying the tools. Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.

Thanks so much for the video. As a woman learning to use and love power tools, I really appreciate the level of detail. I can't wait to pull it out this weekend and play around with it. I used it once several months ago, but didn't get good results. I was trying to use the fence that came with it, but of course it had too much wobble to get a straight cut - I was using the router to clean up the inside edge of kitchen cabinet doors after cutting out the inner panels. Your explanation on reversing the direction of the wing nut makes perfect sense.

Agreed! Very good review. Even with the low price tag, it just goes to show you when you take your time and go slow and let the tool do it's job, it's a good bargain for DIY tasks. I was almost going to spend up to 3x on maybe a little more of a tool, but this review has now convinced me, this Drillmaster will be fine. Thanks for your time and the good tips. Thank you:) BTW, too bad the trim guide you demonstrated toward the end wasn't designed to pivot which would allow it to go a tad lower.

Curiosity Busted!... I wanted to trim some laminate along the edge of the countertop. I went ahead and purchased a trim router. At the shop, I was curious about the guides that came with the router the shopkeeper here in India told that The bit's bearing and guide's bearing should be aligned together so they roll against each other which I did and ended up damaging both the guide and bit which I had purchased both again. He also told to mount the straight edge guide the wrong way as shown in manual I ended up ruining my workpiece as the wing nut bounced to it halfway through, The router fell off my hand and I am lucky my feet escaped in the slight margin. Now this video was so so so thorough that helped me a lot and guided me towards right path of using this power tool. Although I would've been happy if some point is included about that plastic guide piece which I haven't find good use of yet, I couldn't thank you enough sir. Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!

Bought one cuz it was cheap about a year ago to use on smaller jobs where my Bosch was too big to throw around. Problem is that it doesn't have variable speed so on a lot of smaller jobs it's like a bull in a china shop. It's either on or off, but it is plenty powerful and solidly built. Bought a Dewalt DWP611PK variable speed the other day with the plunge base. Love it. You get what you pay for. Now I just keep a roundover bit in it with a 5"x5" 1/4 inch base dedicated to edge trimming.

Richard, thanx for posting this video. I bought one of these trim routers yesterday, and thought I was just not smart enough to assemble the fences! The washer fix works great, but I had to use a 5/16" flat washer to clear the shoulders on the carriage bolt. My router also had an issue with the "edge knob" bolt being just a tad bit too long, making it hit the "lock knob" bolt. A few swipes with a file accross the end of the edge knob bolt cured that, although the Trim Guide Assy is of limited value (as you mentioned). I guess that little piece of clear lastic ("L" shaped with the center of one leg cut out) must be a guard to prevent debris flying out the side, but it is totally ignored in the directions. Seems like this is a good little trim router if you use it as that, with bits equipped with ball bearing rollers. Thanx again. Mike

Thank you Richard for the nice explanation and demo of the trim router. I recently bought the 230V version of this router (in India). The design is identical and the price is less than half that of established brands like Bosch and Makita. The brand name mentioned on the sticker is Dongcheng and it is made in China. - The L-shaped clear plastic piece is described as "Chip deflector" in the booklet. - The base plate has provision for fixing a guide bushing. In addition to the other accessories, a 10mm guide bushing is supplied with the 230V version and it can be fixed by removing the four screws in the base plate. I have no clue as to why it is not supplied with the 120V version. - The no-load speed of the 230V version is 30000. The router is dynamically balanced and the motor runs real smooth when it is switched on. There is no speed control, but for the low price, this router is value for money.

got this for $18 after coupon over a year ago. used it for 1 table project and a slew of closet shelving projects. it's already paid for itself. if it broke this weekend i would have gotten my money's worth. no need to get a $150 Makita or Bosch unless you are an avid wood worker or you do work working for a living

+jgg204 If mine broke I would buy another to replace it too, but I don't see it breaking. Seems solid and reliable. Thanks.

I have started making cigar box guitars. Big routers are overkill for rounding the necks and cutting the pickup holes. I picked up one of these small routers from Harbor Freight with 25% off coupon and was just opening the box when I saw your video. I thought hey, why not assemble it along with you. Thanks a bunch your video was very helpful. I will also be getting the guide clamp.

Thanks! Very thorough and my bewilderment should be included regarding the "L" transparent plastic piece. Regarding tools my goal has always been to not get anything bigger and heavier than needed and this router really fills a nice gap. I've a couple large ones and they are such a nuisance to handle. Again, Thanks!

Thank you for this video. I was wondering how to get the roller guide to work, as you showed, it doesn't really back away from the bit to make a notch. A few other videos I found for this router weren't very good, and they made no attempt to use the attachments. I was hoping to make a simple picture frame as my first project, and I realise the guides won't work for that. I do like the clamping guide you have, I usually use my four foot aluminum level and some quick clamps as a guide for my sabre, circular saw, and rotozip. But I feel, after watching this video, that investing in a clamping guide is a great idea. It's been 30 years since my high school shop class and using a router. I am excited to use this router and your tips and tricks, thank you again for the video.

Great video - I normally don't watch videos this long but yours' was worth it. You demonstrated every 'official' way to use this little tool that I can think of. I bought one after watching this but haven't yet had a chance to use it. I do intend to build a small table (maybe a little bigger than a large shoe box) to use this with in the future. I figure with a MDF top and some adjustable clamped-down guides it would perform even better than with the supplied guides.
