Hmm lets choose one... I say the Plague of Cyprian. Its symptoms are delightful. “As the strength of the body is dissolved, the bowels dissipate in a flow; a fire that begins in the inmost depths burns up into wounds in the throat... the intestines are shaken with continuous vomiting ... the eyes are set on fire from the force of the blood ... as weakness prevails through the failures and losses of the bodies, the gait is crippled or the hearing is blocked or the vision is blinded ...”

As a coin collector I totally agree. It may take away all value but I'd rather be able to see the detail in the coin and learn were it came from especially since my interest in collecting coins came from the journey in which the coin has endured before it got to me. It's really really cool to think that a coin I'm holding was made, used by and was in the hands of people from thousands of years ago and now it's in my possession
@Jigsaw407
@Jigsaw407 4 года назад
I only have one coin, but it's a beautiful silver dollar from 1885 (New Orleans mint) in pristine condition. It passed all the tests of being genuine (non-magnetic, proper luster, correct orientation of heads and tails etc.). Being in this good condition it probably wasn't in circulation much, but it's still fascinating to me that this coin was around during the times of the Wild West.
@griffincoldiron

With that triple dog dare and "the game of life," I want to introduce you guys to a game called "What are the odds?" For example, Wren jokes about drinking the coin juice. C-Mike would then say, what are the odds? Wren sets the range, for example, 1 in 20. Wren and C-Mike count down from 3 together, and both say a number in the range at the same time. If you both say the same number, then Wren would have to do the thing. But you can set whatever range you want, you can say 1 in 1,000,000. Regardless it's a very fun game and seems like a fun way to get Wren and the others to do dumb things. :)
@krisfire
@krisfire 7 лет назад
Funny thing is around where I live (the South) I've always heard that game called "1 to 10" although you're stuck between 1 and 10 it's the same rules lol.
@SpencerBrowFilms

Griffin Coldiron something I gotta add is that if the person who's getting dared says 1 out of 2, that means if the two people say different numbers, the person who proposed the dare has to do it!
@KhOrganization
@KhOrganization 7 лет назад
Griffin Coldiron just asking. If you both had to do 1 in 20 wouldn't the odds be technically 1 in 400? Since it's like rolling 2 20 sided dice and hoping to get the same number on both. Unless that doesn't matter lol.

Nick, you might want to select a electrolysis process that doesn't harm metals. what we saw happen with the spoon could also happen to the coin, depending on the metal it's made off. If you could get your hands on a small titanium(or platinum) rod you might have a replacement for your spoon that doesn't get corroded, but it might corrode your coin.

just gonna say because I've done electrolysis for a few years in school, be careful guys. I've never done it indoors without proper ventilation because you can risk the buildup of hydrogen (and oxygen) gases which can lead to some not too satisfactory results if a spark were to jump from one of your clamps. another thing just to be aware of since it sounds like you clean coins a lot and may be implementing this in the future is that if you use a stainless steel anode (the material with the positive current running though it) it can cause oxidized chromium to form in a gas above the solution (I believe it was Hexavalent Chromium but I may be wrong, I'm just typing this from my car). Anyway papa bless and it makes me super happy when you guys do little things involving science and film making since those are like my two favorite things.

Hey, you may be able to preserve the oxide layer or patina if you use a smaller potential for your electrolysis. You can also have a sacrificial piece of metal, one that is more easily redoxed so that it is consumed rather than the oxide. I'm not sure if it will still be enough to knock the grime and dirt though. Cool video guys!

I don't know, maybe it's just me but the idea that you're holding pieces of ancient history in your hands just blows my mind. Some of those coins have survived thousands of years, from the Roman era to today, who knows whose hands those coins have been through over the millennia and they now end up in yours. It's crazy. Maybe it's because I'm a history nerd but seeing those coins cleaned and seeing the remnants of their original state makes me all giddy.

It's probably too late, but don't use stainless steel in electrolysis. The chromium in stainless steel creates carcinogenic compounds during the electrolysis process. I cleaned my dad's rusty tools using a piece of regular old non-alloy steel rebar. Yes stainless steel doesn't degrade as fast, but I'd rather stay on the safe side than be a bit more efficient.

At 5:52 Nick says that the value of the coin has been ruined because of how they cleaned the coin. But why is that? They we're successful in getting the detail of the coin out from the dirt and rust. Do coin collectors care about the way that the coin was cleaned? Why does that effect the value?

Later on in the video he explains that it gets rid of the oxidation layer, "Petina(?)", which is what gives a coin value. I think that this layer basically tells you how old it is. Without it, the coin is just another hunk of metal with stuff printed on it.
@stludachris
@stludachris 7 лет назад
leaderdblusbro knowing what coin it is, by looking at the detail, actually tells you how old it is...like the France coin. I think the patina protects the coin and is the reason it has survived for so long. Remove that, and it won't last as long anymore. Just my guess.
@thathackerguy117
@thathackerguy117 7 лет назад

Patina. It's a very thin layer of oxidized metal, basically like rust but the good kind. It gives really old copper this greenish appearance, which is an indicator of how old it is but also looks nice in general. More importantly, a thin layer of Patina protects the rest of the metal from being oxidized further, rusted away. Electrolysis removes this layer, which is bad. Not just because it loses its historical value, but also because the metal is opened up to more wear and tear from further oxidation.

305 You’re almost right. Since they decided to use common salt (or NaCl), you would get both electronegative gases (Oxygen and Chlorine) at the positive terminal (or Cathode), and Hydrogen at the negative terminal (or anode). The sodium would revert back to its solid powder form and settle down at the bottom of the glass as the precipitate.

Next time use aluminium foil on the electrolysis. It is less noble than Iron so it should be more effective, you get higher surface area and you don't destroy spoons. Also it should work passively with aluminium if you just have salt in the water. Would be slower though. It is a long time since I did chemistry but I did a quick check on the internet and I should be right.
