Drive southbound on rue Principale in Standstead to rue Canusa Street along part of the border, and eventually arriving at the Haskell Free Library which divided by the border. Note: where I paused speaking, that is near the US customs and immigration border checkpoint. I did park next to a fire hydrant beside the library.

I've driven Canusa Avenue before. It's strange to see Quebec plates on one side and Vermont plates on the other. One house I saw...on the US side...had a little plaque with the US and Canadian flags on it. I've read that many people living in the two border towns are dual citizens because there was a time when the nearest hospital was in the US so that would automatically make a child with Canadian parents a US citizen.

Very interesting indeed! I took a closer look via Google Maps. Must be a strange situation for the US locals living in Canusa Street. It seems that they are free to enter Canada by just heading east. But they'll always have to pass that US checkpoint at the western end of the street when driving (southwards) into the US.

I find this really cool as someone from an island country (New Zealand). The idea that you can just cruise along a road with a different country on either side - very cool!

It was strange being stopped by a US border officer to let another car pass in front of me.

Michael Bednarski So they just let you in without asking questions? Why?

@@akzebraminer US Customs and Border Control will let people will walk from Canada along the sidewalk into the library entrance on the US side. Anyone who does this must return to Canada along the sidewalk. There are cameras everywhere.

Michael Bednarski If you were to want to cross the street to visit your neighbors, would they still have to check you? If so, where?

@@akzebraminer At about 1:20 in the video, one would have to report to either border patrol checkpoint first before crossing the street.

I wonder if a traffic collision were to happen in the middle of Canusa Street, who would respond? 🤔

One of the coolest tings I saw in summer 2020 by the library: there were 5-6 friends (or families?) lined up in their folding lawn chairs 2-3 on each side of the rocks border separating the two countries, just chatting and laughing. I happened to be driving by on the Caswell Ave side (US), I was very tempted to snap a picture, but there was no good place to stop. PS, I should add the border was totally closed because of COVID

Rue Principale actually means "Main Street".

when did they put the large stones on both side of the flower pots on the Border,, They were not there last year when I visited the Library in Sept 2017

I am not sure when the flower pots were placed on the border. I did hear that steel gate fences were placed on other side streets a couple years ago.

I think it’s unfair you couldn’t go to your neighbours house! Like surely people cross over at night ?

So the Canadians are allowed to put road signs on the american side. Fascinating.

I have a question for you. When you went south on Rue Principale and turned left to go on to the US side of Canusa street:- those houses there on the right, if you wanted to visit someone there would you have to report first to American customs or is it exempt like the US lane of Canusa street you were driving in?.
@michaelbednarski4601
@michaelbednarski4601 3 года назад
If I wanted to visit the houses on the right (US) side, I would be required to stop at US customs and immigration first. Both the US and Canadian border officials take border infractions seriously.

being that the road takes (curves into) canada that defeats the purpose of a customs checkpoint (right?)

There is only parking on the street on the Canadian side. Don't park next to the fire hydrant.

One will not encounter US border patrol in Hyder, Alaska. However, from what I have heard, if one wants to take the ferry to other Alaskan towns and cities along the panhandle, one will face US customs at the next port.
