there are few things PS1 did better than the PC version. Maybe you have already ideas for a video. Great Video as always. I love Driver... both PS1 and PC. In my memory PC was easier in Undercover Missions
The last one was the "Freight Train" cheat on the PC. As a kid, it was a blast flying through the cities with no worries while watching all the carnage.
I generally preffer look of player cars and cities on ps1, but i have quite alot of nostlagia for PC version and Miami car especially. I think mix of best from both would be ultimate Driver 1. PS1 looks more pretty like stylized ps1/n64 games, PC kind of looks worse for extra resolution and draw distance and some of the texture work is just plain worse than PS1 and it tends to look somewhat basic at times.
There are understandable differences, like the draw distance, but old games sometimes had differences between versions that doesn't really make sense. In this case: Miami player car being totally different. Why? These were a thing until around the PS3 generation games. I never undestood those.
what I don't understand is that I had a ps1 disc of driver, but when I used it with a PC, it was compatible. I had psi graphics on a PC. Makes sense? (childhood memory) lol.
The PC version has notable visual differences, but as gameplay is an important factor for me, my point goes to the PS1 version. I feel more in control of evasive maneuvers and agility with the car and a fixed axis camera, more than in the PC version, where camera movement affects gameplay, exactly following the view behind the car, which makes it difficult to see what is in front, especially when going up bridges or hills, making it difficult to see the car ahead to avoid crashing.
I'm really glad they made the brenches destructibles on the PC, given it avoids unnecessary frustration. BTW: there are two things that are at least for to mention (could even make it into another video, that is as long as you make a 2nd part XD XD) 1)PC version includes the "In hood" camera 2)Director mode allows more camera modes for cops. In the PS1 version you could only set 1st person camera to the cops (in Driver 2 this was fixed)
Just a small thing I noticed; pressing both brake and handbrake give you the shortest braking distance in PS1 version but in PC version, if you pressed both, only handbrakes will be applied.
The PC version also has a feature I sorely wish it was on PS1 - you can choose your car in Take Your Ride mode (after beating the game of course), and if I remember this correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) in Undercover mode in certain moments. Heck, for Take Your Ride you could even choose the default car from another city! On PS1, well, you must input GameShark code, and even then, the car selection is limited.
PC version is much better at the important bits imo like general graphics and especially draw distance. It's the first game I've played properly and finished so it's very close to my heart.
