You actually helped solve a fever dream my cousins and I have been having for decades. We were being chased by the cops once, came down a jump from one of the inclines and the cop that was chasing us must have hit the roof of another car because it got absolutely *launched* into the air, coming down a few moments later. We never replicated it and no one ever believed us so thanks for the proof and unlocking a core memory :)
Things like hitting the cars roof sends you flying reminds me of how Driver is a good example to why we should praise game developers nowdays, because for every aspect of the game they put thought and time into it, for every small detail you see they had to make sure it would work the way it should. For Driver they had to save every bit of memory possible while making sure it would still play as intended, cars parking and other minor things is what made it a banger back in the day, so sad the franchise was abandoned...
Look at it this way, at least the game died with some dignity intact and didn't become utter cringe like Watch Dogs (with both 2 and Legions being terrible offenders of this, 1 is just generic at worst).
The cut pickup is a rather poor attempt at a Ford Ranchero. The car version they didn't cut is based on the 73-76 Ford Gran Torino which also had a pickup or UTE variation. It seems the devs scrapped the truck version because they didn't have time to finish the looks of it properly. It almost looks like the same 3d model as the other pickup but with the Torino's textures.
The purple pickup in the garage is the same model as the world pickup just the textures are swapped with that other car even shown in the video. (Torino?) And honestly the garage version looks better (even tho its weird but still better) then the world version since that one have some weird nonsense texture mapping, like the car door somehow ends in the middle and not where, like its placed half way through it should be and is all wobbly distorted. You can use it as a meme "we have the El Camino at home" then show this mess XD Another car that really bothers me is that station vagon, the texturing or lets say layout placements on it doesn't make any sense ... There are few other mistakes on some cars but these two were always an eyesore. I can't imagine playing this on PC too. On PS1 and with a CRT TV combo I don't mind it but outside of that no thanks ... Driver 1 and 2 always needed a remake and this comes from a person who hates remakes ...
Nice video, however, there are some things that I'll like to add: - Concerning the colors, there's one unused one that can't be loaded under normal condition, you'll have to use a hack to be able to see it. The way the game loads the traffic car is like a color palette, which the values concerning type and color are pre-determined, and this can also be changed through hacks - Concerning their paths, you can actually change the path they use by forcing them the direction through code, they'll use their blinkers accordingly to where they go, even if the path doesn't exist and lead them to nowhere. - Concerning the damage, the civ cars can actually hold the same damage as the player car, however, a special flag is set when the player car hit them, therefore disabling them. If you hit them then turn off the flag, they'll continue to drive like normal. Also, they do not get in collision with buildings or objects to avoid getting them stuck, but this flag can be enabled so that any civ car can hit any objects/buildings. If you need for any future video, I can provide you a monitor code, which put the camera on them and follow them as long as you want, you can find some funny stuff, like the cops can chase them lol Still a very nice video, happy to still see people interested in this game!
Nice! I thought that they couldn't collide with other objects for resources saving purpose (processing collusion detection for every car could be heavy for PS1)
The roof and underside reaction was a great way of glitching out of bounds and exploring parts of the map you normally couldn't get to, like the other side of the bridge on SF or the bridges over the highway on Miami.
This brought back memories. I remember being a little kid and seeing the Driver commercial on TV. I was so excited when I saw a car crash and knock out the headlights. I said I gotta have this game! Decades later I can say I played all the driver games on the PlayStation consoles and it was truly a joy.
i always noticed how there'd be parked ones at night that then drive off without main lights and with just turn signals - then as they reach a certain point they'll magically turn "on" :o
The building at 1:54 is the Ping Yuen Mural on Stockton Street in Chinatown, San Francisco. Most of the textures are photographic, it would be interesting seeing how many of them could be tracked down
I never heard of the game Driver, however Im also into old games (half life, 1998). So I could understand your passionate towards old games' details. Older games have distinctive visuals, details and atmosphere, and that keeps me with those games. Your video gives similar vibes with half life fact file series. Anyways, I enjoyed your video thanks
_Gets the side of their car gently booped by the player vehicle._ *PANIK* _Gets their car's front engine smashed and caught on fire by another NPC vehicle._ *Kalm*
Regarding car colors: there is one more "secret" NY cab color that you don't see in Take A Ride. Those differently colored cabs appear in "The Ali Situation/Problem" (and maybe in "Grand Central Station Switch", didn't test it there though) as roadblock cars in the second part if you get enough felony. They act as pursuers (obviously) and they are also stupidly squishy compared to their black sedan "friends", almost like that Superfly car that you drive in one mission in Miami.
Actually not true, they took pretty easy damage. The difference though is that you could slam one until it's wrecked and it would keep driving 😂. That is until you steal it anyways.
@@natedunn3469 ... Maybe I'm misremembering it! But I think it's possible to actually wreck them until they won't drive anymore. I mean for the computer, not just the player. I wish I still had the game to check it.
@@pingu4434 it could be, I never spent much time looking at em. I know if they end up against a wall or a pole they won't back up to get off of it, they'll just push against it 😆
When I played Driver, I never spent time investigating other cars, so I never noticed that there is only 2 cars per city (3 cars if you count the cops) until you said something. As for launching your car off into space when you hit the roof, I always had a blast doing it in San Francisco when I was chased by the cops. I always led them to the area past the Golden Gate Bridge and then started to have fun with them and tried to get over the concrete barrier
Great game! At some points of the PS1 game, if you get hit hard enough by a cop (while your lined up against a concrete barrier) you can get pushed through the wall and drive around outside the map! You can even drive up to the background planes of LA landing which look like paper cutouts close up lol. Awesome vid!
Yeah I used to do this, and if you drive far enough outside the map, you'll see some sort of ghost town popping in and out of existence when looking at a specific angle Also NPC cars seem to have paths way out of bounds where they can spawn and drive normally
@@Weylmes I disagree. In GTA 4 and 5 they both calculate deformation in a lazy way. Every separate mesh (door, body, fender, hood, bumper etc) is treated as part of the same one. So the car deforms like it was a single piece of clay and you smoothed it. In a real car, those are all separate parts attached only in specific places, so they bend differently to each other. Driver sells that illusion much better with things like bent hoods
@@kyle8952 I’d agree with you there, I think flatout that came out in 2004 had done it just right, cars dented and deformed but also parts would fall off.. it actually looked realistic. To give credit where it’s due gta4 for an open world game had it just right imo… gta5 on the other hand can eat a big bag of unwashed phalli.
Great vid- I never realised how well the taxi crumples. While hitting the roof can lead to great pouncing results- I've found you get more consistent and more spectacular results from instead hitting their muffler right in the middle of the underside, with the front corner of your car. This way you can get much higher sometimes.
I remember driving at night in this game, I'd make my TV gamma super dark so you cannot see anything that's not in the range of headlights; then pretend I'm the real traffic lol
Never knew about the npcs parking their cars. That's really impressive! GTA V is the last game I know that does that, though it didn't happen organically like in this one. Also, I could've sworn there was a van in the PS1 parking garage, too. Nice video!
PS1 version is full of parked car compared to the PC version so it's more noticable if you stay in the area. Actually, i never spotted a parked car animation on PC.
5:00 I never knew about these strange traffic behaviors. I've been playing this game since at least 2001 and I somehow never noticed this lol. It's amazing that I learn new things about this game after all these years.
7:30 my favorite thing about driver. Sometimes in survival San Fran the cops will flip you over. If got hit another cars roof with yours you go flying several miles up.
"Fun Fact:" Civilian Cars can crash into you at red lights. Another "Fun Fact:" If a Police Car sees this, they'll blame YOU. ... Both happened to me once while I had no felony charges, and while my car was severely damaged.
The game engine performs some calculations regarding the speed, angle and mass of the object hitbox. The car roof maybe could have some fixed values to repel other cars avoiding stacking they up. Just a theory...I am curious too.
It's a bug in the physics code. Certain values are not clamped and do not take certain deltas into consideration, and _both_ cars will run the same calculations. This was fixed in Driver 2 and I was able to backport the code to the PC version, and sure enough it fixed the roof collision issues. Would love to go into more detail someday!
I think it's that the hit box on the car is open up top and at the bottom, meaning that upon hitting the top or bottom of the car places you deep within the hit box thus causing the results of intense impact. That's my theory anyways 😆.
Great video, mate! The music selection is also nice. The car physics (suspension details, etc.) in this game do not even exist in today's games. Even though it was a Ps1 game, it had such physics and car damage details. Absolutely surprising! Also, playing the game at 60 FPS breaks the "touching the roof of the car" glitch. It reduces the height of the flight/jump. (If you play with original/low FPS you will experience big flying) BTW, you should also make such videos about Driver 2! You will see different results.
This is the PS1 version in the Computer version, the cars are drawn a little differently. But thanks for the video anyway! Nostalgia, I played this game in 1999 =)) Greetings from Yakutia
7:32 I used to do this to police cars all the time in survival mode in San Francisco lol. I would go to the first hill and let the cops jump over the hill and more often times than not they would flip onto their side or on their roof. I would then hit their roof and go flying into one of the buildings lol. I also did this in Take A Ride mode in Miami where I would make the cops jump those curved bridges and flip onto their side so I could hit their roof lol.
My first PC game. Love it so much. It was so fun to play and i laughed so hard seeing cars fly into the air. San Francisco is the best and funniest map
Here we are, showing how wacky the civilian cars drive in this 25 year old video game and they still drive more civilized than anybody on the road does today lol.
Everything on this game was nice Except one thing. With single touch you got heavy damage on your car. Driver 2 was better on this matter but driver 2 suffer from low fps and blinkers 😅 7:30 the good old days 😢 Is anyone remember when you throw outside map you still can driving outside map? That was funny and scary in same time because after you going far away from main map everything became dark and you found zombie cars driving in sky. I saw this in ps1 version when i was child. In driver 2 when you throw outside map you instantly become dead
I may have a little theory about why touching a sideways car's roof sends you flying... I think what happens here is that cars touching roofs are set to be pushed upwards. In normal circumstances, it would simply make your car bounce off of roofs. 7:28 If you go frame by frame, the car touching the sideways roof seems to be building up vertical speed instead of getting launched instantly, almost like there's a gust of wind coming from bellow. You can see that happen everytime! That probably happens because touching it when it's sideways causes your car to remain in contact with the roof for longer, thus pushing you upwards way more often than intended. It added vertical speed for every frame that you were in contact with the roof and that's what sent you flying! ... But again, it's just a theory. This is probably all wrong for all I know, but it's fun to speculate I suppose.
It has something to do with "levers" in the physics code. I experimented with backporting the physics from REDRIVER2 into the PC version, and the part of the code that does "lifting" is different and clamps more of the math, as well as using more information from the collision in calculations. I honestly can't remember exactly what fixes it, but it was definitely resolved in Driver 2 for sure.
Me and my friends and family believed that the purple cars (in Miami) are police in disguise/police informants, every time we see one we either act cool or ram the fuck out of it, no idea how we came up with that conclusion (I guess we see one or two each time a chase sequence gets started) and I dk why I still think it's true, I guess this fact has been engraved in my mind since when I was a kid.
The algorithm got a boner to this video. Like I maximally from time to time listen to the driver ost and despite that this video was on the TOP of my recomendation page. Lucky you. Edit: Im repairing an old PS1 that I got for 30 bucks. Soon I will be able to play Driver again. Im really excited.
