Hats off the the Brewers. They take their handicapped spaces serious. Serious enough to pay overtime to a policeman to cut down on the abuse. That is going above and beyond the call of duty.
I never thought I would have to use a disabled parking spot. I got in a bad car accident and my leg was smashed so bad I have a metal plate and 7 screws holding it together. It's so annoying when I see these selfish people abusing these spots!!!
No kidding. I survived a 165 foot rock climbing fall (it almost killed me). I hate these self entitled pricks that make my life more difficult then it already is.
Awesome! I am a companion to a blind, elderly woman, and I can not tell you how many times I have had to navigate her through a crowded parking lot because some schmuck using someone else's permit decided to park in one of the few handicapped spots. It is infuriating!
I know and understand completely. I'm handicapped and more often than not in denied access because someone else * was only going to be a minute* I have 9 1 1 on speed dial and 9 times out of ten the illegal cars are towed. Do I feel bad... NO!!!
Driving for over 20 yer and I have never once even THOUGHT about parking in a handicapped space. People who do should have their licenses taken away for a year first offense and lifetime after a second offense. It would stop happening quickly. Now, scumbags just get away with it too much.
My brother-in-law has been pulled over and arrested for DUI so many times that he permanently lost his drivers license... Guess what...he still drives..these people will too.
@SgtPiggie Not really. He drives just the same. It is sad and BS at the same time. When he kills someone from DUI, maybe he'll learn his lesson. I doubt it though.
They should on the First Offense revoke the permit and automatically set up a hearing for you to re-instate it. The person who got the ticket MUST attend that hearing and explain why they did what they did. Then they can decide if they are going to re0instate the permit or not!
My husband is disabled with a permanent placard and no matter where we go all of the handicap stalls are always taken. They may all be legitimate but this makes you wonder.
szqsk8 am i the only person that would be okay to walk from the end of the lot if he was handicapped? Because I wouldn’t care if i had to. People are lazy
Bill Fletcher Me too! The only problem I have though, is I don't have a vehicle or a placard and I use a walker to get around. This would seriously be funny to watch me giving out tickets to cheaters, wouldn't it?
+TheHannible What about the people who really need the handicapped parking spaces? What did they do to deserve treatment by people who take their parking spaces ILLEGALLY and not look for revenge on anyone? The fines should be even more than they are right now. It's not to much to ask give up parking space and let an able person walk an extra few feet so that one who may not be able to walk at all be able to use the same facility as you.
Can you not get a placard in your state? I live in California and owning a vehicle ins't a requirement to get a placard; any person with a signed letter from a physician can obtain a placard (I have MS and have a placard).
On at least one occasion in the last year and a half, I have gone to the grocery store and had to leave and come back later because all the handicapped spots were taken, and even the closest non-handicapped spots. So happy to see officers cracking down on permit abuse.
@@ciaran4962 Where I live it's $750, and my area isn't exactly rich. The high amount deters (or is supposed to deter) permit abuse, as well as parking in those spaces without one at all.
Great. I've been 100% disabled since 1996. I didn't get a placard until about 7-8 years ago, because I didn't have much problem walking before that. Do now. But still pass on handicap spaces when I can. But some days very thankful for them. Wish more cops did this, good work.
When I used to drive my grandfather places (who had a placard) I would always drop him off at the front and then go find a normal spot. When we left, I'd run to the car while he waited out front and I would pick him up. Disgusting to see this.
My parents had to do that for me before I got my tag, but my dad would often go to a different store while I shopped with my mom, which made it a little complicated. My mom still does it sometimes if I decide to walk in a store and end up being unable to make it out to the car afterwards, even if we parked in a handicapped spot with my tag.
I wish our cops in Tucson would do their job. They refuse to enforce handicapped parking in lots and anywhere that is not owned by the city. Shopping centers, medical plazas, theaters and everywhere else you are just screwed if your are handicapped and the police don't give a shit.
Same here in Chicago. At the very most, if someone's sitting in the car, they'll ask him to move. And it's not at all unusual to see a marked patrol car parked in handicapped spaces outside restaurants.
Cassandra Moran, I have an appointment with the Attorney General's office, Civil Rights division. They are the only people in the state who are responsible for enforcement from what they tell me. I have reported several business (like CVS and CircleK and my vet, Dr. Miller (who I truly like, except for this) who have moved their disabled parking away from the front of the store and put it as far away from the door as possible. That is illegal it seems. Someone has been telling people all they have to do is have a certain number of spaces, but the law, if they bothered to read it, says the spaces must be close enough to the door for people with mobility problems to access the store with as close to what undisabled people do. This means the spaces must be near the door or why have them? As for the malls and shopping centers, they are responsible 4 enforcement and if they don't , report them to the attorney general and they will investigate and promise to prosecute. Good luck!
steve cannon They're required by law to have 2% of their parking spaces marked for handicapped. That's one for every 50. If you want something to show these businesses, the DOJ has the regulations on a free to download .pdf available at www.ada.gov.
Imagine being so selfish and lazy you are willing to inconvenience a legitimately disabled person from being able to navigate through society. The fines should be VERY high.
I've watched as handicapped people go through so much unnecessary discomfort, stress and even pain just trying to do the smallest errand or keep an appointment because able-bodied people have stolen their parking spaces. Also people parking on handicapped crossed walks forcing the handicapped person to have to walk out in the busy street to go around them. One poor blind man had to walk all the way back home because he could not possibly see well enough to go out into the street. Now that's a sin! A big one too.
I know in California if you are found using someone else’s handicapped placard you will have a fine up to $1700 and the placard will be taken from you and the person the placard is for will have to go to DMV and register to get a new one.
I am disabled and have my permit to park close to the door so the problem I have walking is a little easier,BUT I run into people all the time who say (I'm only going in for a minute) or they have to get to the cash machine next to the super market I shop at.They yell at me or curse me out for saying something. This makes me so mad,and they just get away with it.What can I do? If I call the police they will be gone by then.I feel like spray painting their windows blue, but I would get in trouble for that.
They make washable spray paint. I saw one of those prank channels doing it to people double parking or illegally using the handicap spot. Not sure how real it is but the paint does wipe off.
I too, have two plaques & put one in my wife's car so when I'm in it I don't have to take mine out of my own car. She NEVER uses handicapped spaces without me. Not as much because, if caught, it'd be terribly expensive, but, as she says, "I'd never do that to another handicapped veteran."
Wisconsin's not the only one - Wyoming and Minnesota have that option, too. I live alone and fly independently at least once a year, so I keep one in my car for daily use (I drive) and the other one I only use when I travel - I use one to park in a handicapped spot at the airport (airport is 2+ hours away, so I can't just get dropped off/picked up) and I still have one available to use when I get to my destination. Works brilliantly - it was such a pain that I was only able to get one hang tag at a time when I still had my temporary one, because I had to choose between parking in a handicap spot at the airport and being able to use it at my destination. If I never had to drive myself to/from the airport, I would only need one, but because I do, I need 2.
I personally asked a Menards(regional Lowe's type store) there took 5 spaces away for there own rental trucks. I did not do the bullshit of suing them .that would not help me in the long run. I called the city were this occurs, they in turn check with the state of Minnesota, who regulates the amount of handicap speaces.they went out to the store. Verified what I stated as fact. They then told the store to restore these 5 speaces with signed ,paint , and fined the store I guess. I was call to inform me I was right. Job done. I did not need these speaces before 2010.sho I never gave it much thoght. Now life is different.
So I have a neighbor who rents her Honda Van to various customers, it has DP Plates. So she is basically allowing anyone to use this DP plate to park in Handicap spaces. This is Wrong and I reported to CA DMV, they did nothing and said they have to catch them in person. Abusing DP plates and Placards in CA is at a High rate and no one cares. Part of the problem.
I have a permit for my aunt. And we were at the mall when when a SUV pulled up with a lot of teens in it. I told the officer he caught them but they said we won't long they went in and the officer left. It was her grandma placard.
In part, this issue is because most city agencies do not do their job enforcing the laws protecting the disabled, no priority is assigned to correct or enforce the law. Large fines, towing, these actions can make money to pay for enforcement. If tickets were made payable when people get their car sticker, people would have no choice but to pay or no sticker, and another ticket and fine.
In Virginia the cops don't care, who parks in handicapped spaces. I even caught a fairfax county cop in a police car picking up his electric drill at the black and decker store, parked in a handicapped spot.
The worst part is people are proud of themselves for getting away with this. They feel it's their right to abuse this because they are "important" and can do whatever they want.
Oh my goodness, YES! I always have my tag, but when I go with my mom it's next to impossible to find an open handicapped spot at Costco - I really hate it.
Handicapped parking is not enforced in Tucson, and stores like "Circle K" have begun moving the handicapped parking to spaces as far away from the front doors as possible so that their "regular" customers don't have to park away from the door. They even moved the wheelchair cuts onto the sidewalks in front of the stores so they could do this. No one cares in our city or state government. The state now keeps most of the money from the tickets and the city actually loses money prosecuting tickets, so people are allowed to drive up to 10 mph over the speed limit, and red light runners are horrible since they got rid of traffic cameras.
HOW can any one USE TWO permits? You can only use one at a time so issuing two is inviting fraud. BUT, if two permits are issued (AGAIN, WHY?) and there is abuse BOTH should be confiscated and force the applicant to JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS to the state before a re-issue of ONE permit. The problem is, some family members, such as the guy using his mother's who is in a nursing home, did this without her knowing. He probably applied for the permit 'for her' but uses it himself!
Issuing two is not inviting fraud. Just one of a whole host of reasons: I have a legitimate reason for my hang tags. I live alone and fly independently at least once a year, so I keep one in my car for daily use (I drive) and I use the other one only when I travel - I use one to park in a handicapped spot at the airport (getting a ride to/from is not an option for me, so I have to drive myself) and I still have the other one available to use when I get to my destination. So technically, I AM using both hang tags at once in those situations. Works brilliantly - it was such a pain that I was only able to get one hang tag at a time when I still had my temporary one, because I had to choose between being able to park in a handicap spot at the airport and being able to use it at my destination. If I never had to drive myself to/from the airport, I would only need one. Or if I didn't drive at all, I would only need one - just keep it with me everywhere I go and use it in the car of whoever is driving me. My grandmother has 2 tags as well, because although she doesn't drive, she sometimes forgets that she keeps one in her car, and she also sometimes goes out with my aunts or uncles in their cars, so she keeps the other one in her purse so that they don't have to go down to the parking ramp to retrieve hers out of her car every single time she rides in someone else's car. Same reason as me when flying - she flies in a wheelchair, and so has to use her wheelchair van to get to and from the airport, but doesn't fly alone, so the van still stays parked at the airport: again, ergo, one for the car at the airport, and one for at her destination. No one ever uses her tags unless she's there, because there's zero reason to use her van unless she's there, and she keeps the other tag in her purse. Problem solved, and no invitation for fraud.
Your situations are in the extreme minority where both are used by yourselves personally, obviously, you and your grandmother are not the focus of the fraud being perpetrated by the vast majority. Please don't assume that I was in any way speaking of you.
Well now that's just dumb. We already have enough people overcrowding our jails for stupid reasons. STEEEEEP fines are what's needed. Most people care about money almost as much as freedom. I'm disabled and I hate to see cheaters as much as the next crippled sap, but come on.
Cali only offers one placard so if you go in another vehicle you have to take yours. I have special plates so its Placard only. Once my truck was in the shop and I forgot it. I received a citation at a hospital parking lot although I just called and it was tossed since I never do that.
Anyone notice that the frauds always take the disabled parking bay nearest to the entrance of the store, a small fine is not a deterrent - the vehicle should be impounded or scrapped.
Just one of a whole host of reasons: I live alone and fly independently at least once a year, so I keep one in my car for daily use (I drive) and the other one I only use when I travel - I use one to park in a handicapped spot at the airport (getting a ride to/from is not an option for me, so I have to drive myself) and I still have one available to use when I get to my destination. Well done. You see it everywhere you go. "Disable" people who look more fit and healthy than most people, and get really irate when you ask about their Disabled Badge.
Just because some with them don't "look" disabled doesn't mean they're faking, but those who are faking or park without one at all are definitely asking for a fine. Unless it was by an officer or someone else official, I would not be amused, either, and I have mine legally, because even though I don't "look disabled", I am.
Tat2Dragons That's a catch 22. Being obese causes type two diabetes, which in turn causes neuropathy. That can make walking difficult and breathing difficult. However, being fat is mostly a choice and therefore choosing to be disabled. So people who are type two diabetic should *NOT* be given handicapped placards. In my opinion anyway.
Burt Gummer Mostly a choice? Some people have disabilities/medical conditions that cause them to gain weight, which can’t always be controlled by diet and exercise.
Tat2Dragons Bullshit! I've an under active thyroid gland. I was told that I wouldn't be able to lose the weight. Not only have I lost and still losing weight, my doctor told me that I reversed my diabetes. I've lost 411lbs without surgery. I made very difficult choices and it has paid off. So yeah, I understand the challenges that people face. You can reverse it. I no longer have trouble breathing. I can walk and bend. Feels great.
You think that's bad? Try going to a snow park along I-80 after being one of the few to actually pay for parking. The vast majority of people parking there didn't pay.
I wish the Oakland A's would sponsor the use of an officer for this at the Coliseum. Every season more people violate using the handicap parking. And just a tip for legal parkers, Don't use the van parking if you don't need & others are available .
Now everyone here that left a comment,i've been doing Disability Rights for over 40 yrs even before ADA was passed into law in 1990,and every State has their own policies too Handicapped Parking.we as Disabled Americans could erase the 9 Trillion Dollar Deficit if we made all Handicapped Parking a 1500.00 Fine as well as a TOW AWAY ZONE.So if you use someone elses Placard for what ever reason, and you get caught.Automatic 1500.00 Ticket and even if its not your vehicle BYE BYE its going too be impounded at an additional 100.00 a day. lets see how many people will try with those new policies in place???.
Oh my..... I understand they meant well..... but dang this can really really backfire. Healthcare doesn’t grow on trees here in the USA. Not all disabilities r visible (like mine lol!). I don’t drive so my family would in fact need to park closer. These instances often force me to “prove” my disabilities (ie showing folks how weak & rubbery my limbs & appendages r....) it’s very degrading. Too many ppl r way too happy to bully others in the names of “justice” what they don’t show is how many folks he “busted” that were actually disabled. Either way nobody wins 😔
And most will be thrown out. Because you not limping does not mean you not handicapped. I had to inform one before that. Because I don't limp. I have a iron lung so walking is impossible for long distance yet I look very normal. I suppose you need job security.
I do wish they would stop using the word handicapped. It refers to a beggar who begs with their cap in hand. I am disabled myself with Multiple Sclerosis and I do not beg!!
Good on them for not caring about being PC. And your interpretation might be what shows up in the etymology of the word, but that is not the contemporary meaning.
