Filmed on Sunday, November 19 2023, I drive around Sabula, IA to see what's going on.
Sabula, Iowa, stands out as a unique and historical community in the United States. Established in Jackson County, its defining characteristic is its status as Iowa's only island city, a distinction earned following the construction of the lock and dam system on the upper Mississippi River in the 1930s.
The history of Sabula is rich and deeply rooted in the natural resources of the region. Founded in 1835, the town's name, of French origin, means "sand," a nod to the sandy soil prevalent in the area. In the late 19th century, the community thrived with industries like a pearl button factory, which utilized clam shells from the river, and a large hog slaughtering industry. However, these industries are no longer present today.
A pivotal moment in Sabula's history was the construction of Lock and Dam No. 13 between Clinton, Iowa, and Fulton, Illinois, in 1939 by the Army Corps of Engineers. This development led to the flooding of lowlands west of the townsite, effectively transforming Sabula into an island and earning it the nickname "Island City."
