Driving Downtown Streets - Broad Street - Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA - Episode 3.
Starting Point: Broad Street goo.gl/maps/AfYXXwYqg652 .
Broad Street is a major arterial street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It runs for approximately 13 miles beginning at the intersection of Cheltenham Avenue on the border of Cheltenham Township and the West/East Oak Lane neighborhoods of North Philadelphia to the Philadelphia Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. It is Pennsylvania Route 611 along its entire length with the exception of its northernmost part between historic Old York Road and Pennsylvania Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue) and the southernmost part south of Interstate 95.
Broad Street runs north-south, in between 13th Street and 15th Street (there is no "14th Street" in Philadelphia, because Broad Street takes its place). It is interrupted by Philadelphia City Hall, which stands where Broad and Market Street would intersect in the center of the city. The streets of Penn Square, Juniper Street, John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and 15th Street form a circle around City Hall at this point. It is one of the earliest planned streets in the United States, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a continuous north-south street, planned by surveyor Thomas Holme and developed for Philadelphia in 1681[1]
Public transportation includes SEPTA's Broad Street Line subway, which served an average of about 137,000 riders per weekday in 2010, running beneath Broad for most of its length. The subway starts in the Fern Rock neighborhood and extends through Center City to Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia.
Philadelphia (/ˌfɪləˈdɛlfiə/) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the fifth-most populous in the United States, with an estimated population in 2014 of 1,560,297.[6][7][8][9][10] In the Northeastern United States, at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, Philadelphia is the economic and cultural anchor of the Delaware Valley, a metropolitan area home to 7.2 million people and the eighth-largest combined statistical area in the United States.
The area's many universities and colleges make Philadelphia a top international study destination, as the city has evolved into an educational and economic hub.[14][15] With a gross domestic product of $388 billion, Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation.[16] Philadelphia is the center of economic activity in Pennsylvania and is home to seven Fortune 1000 companies. The Philadelphia skyline is growing, with several nationally prominent skyscrapers.[17] The city is known for its arts, culture, and history, attracting over 39 million domestic tourists in 2013.[18] Philadelphia has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city,[19] and Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped urban park in the world.[20] The 67 National Historic Landmarks in the city helped account for the $10 billion generated by tourism.[18] Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps,[21][22] and is also the home of many U.S. firsts, including the first library (1731),[23] first hospital (1751)[23] and medical school (1765),[24] first Capitol (1777),[23] first stock exchange (1790),[23] first zoo (1874),[25] and first business school (1881).[26] Philadelphia is the only World Heritage City in the United States.

Best part about driving on Broad or Market is how City Hall slowly comes into view. What a building! Center City has a Manhattan feel of sorts with the skyscrapers; Old City feels like Boston's North End with cobblestone streets and tiny doors and weathered cellar hatches.

What, no ride along Roosevelt Blvd? Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia is one of the most dangerous thoroughfares in America. The boulevard consists of six, 12-foot wide lanes in each direction, and drivers regularly exceed the posted 45 miles per hour and take the road’s dangerous curves far too fast. The boulevard also has two of the nation’s most dangerous intersections, where confused drivers frequently turn into the wrong three-lane stretch of traffic. It's basically a 12-lane superhighway at grade with pedestrians and traffic lights with cross-traffic.

I went to Philly on a business trip recently and was amazed at how much I enjoyed the city and YES, the people. I am from WV and we are used to the country type hospitality and had heard many horror stories about Philly, well, I thoroughly enjoyed the week I spent there. Wife and I walked the streets every evening and did not have one bad experience. I am a city person at heart as I love the diversity, culture and overall ambience of a city. Yes, there are some drawbacks but overall it was a very good stay. We are planning to go back sometime later this fall for a vacation as we did not get to see all that we wanted because I was in class til 4pm. I cannot say anything bad about Philly.
@Methadone4Life
@Methadone4Life 7 лет назад
One drawback is that everything closes up shop much to early for a big city. I was surprised that most everything was closed by 7 or 8pm. Even in the small capital city of Charleston, WV our stores, malls and such stay open until 9:30 on weekdays. Still, I loved Philly and cannot wait to go back, just have to get up early to enjoy all it has to offer.

No it's not at all. The Northeastern part of the city is over 50% of the city, which is very nice. What about Roxborough, Chestnut Hill, East Mt Airy, Manayunk, Society Hill and University City? Philadelphia is a very large, heavily populated city, 1.6 million people within the city limits. Every large city will some depressed areas, but it's hardly 70%!!

Philadelphia "Philly" is a nice city. Has rich historic roots of this country. Beautiful old architecture comprised of Churches, Buildings, houses, etc. mixed with modern sky scrapers. I visited there this summer 2017 in July. I would recommend going to see the Philadelphia Museum of art and the (rocky steps) ofcourse, Pat's King of Cheesesteaks, Center City, Comcast Center, 51 Arch St Building(Skygarten) bar on 50th floor, Oyster House on Sansom St...they have the best Soft Shell Crab ever...wow! , Reading Terminal Market(huge spot for food vendors and food stalls, very crowded everyday), One Liberty Place and 30th St Station.

We just dont want a lot of ppl to know haha. People from NYC, Boston , Chicago or especially the West Coast visit, they are amazed how great a city Philly is and how beautiful it is! The bad stuff you hear, thats some sports stuff blown up in the media or haters lol. Love visiting NYC, Philly is like a liveable New York in ways and we got our own vibe and flow. When I got to City Hall I had to walk over to Corinthian St., which runs beside Eastern State Penitentiary, in order to get to my apartment. Whoa, you never made it up to Temple. Nice tour though. No graffiti, no litter, no muggings. Philadelphia is going to get a different reputation. Go Birds.

Good video and all, but you barely showed what Philly truly has, I get it you covered Broad but there's so many other places you could have gone through to get and ever better video!

For grand architecture, try Germantown. It's like walking around in a museum.

Philly holds its own. It is not the showcase city for the region it is in. That title goes to NYC (NE); CHI (MidAm); and LA (WCoast). But to give Philly its due respect: everything that makes a city a city was done here first. This is America's template city; and that is an unmistakable feeling for anyone who visits. Sure, at turns it feels like an old bum but then, at the turn of a corner, like a grand ole' dame. When you see the grand dame side, you'll be in silent awe of witnessing a unique dignity and class that is second to none. Comparing it to NYC, LA or CHI, is like comparing the Queen of England to the most glamorous starlets.

Looks like a pretty underrated city. Also are cars supposed to be parked in the middle of the road (like at the beginning)?
@RichardFallstich
@RichardFallstich 5 лет назад
This (parked cars) occurs a lot in Philly. Technically illegal, it's not rigorously enforced. I ride bicycle a lot in Philly, it's amazing what goes on when you have the vantage point of a bike. Plus, I never get parking tickets on bicycle!

Its only done in South philly....for the most part. South philly is very densely populated and there is enough parking.... so people park in the middle of broad street.

@bluespeyerful

It's a South Philly-only thing. Technically it's illegal, but it's been done for so long that tickets are rarely, if ever, given.
