Rabat is the capital city of Morocco. Itis is located on the Atlantic Ocean atthe mouth of the river Bouregreg,opposite Salé, the city's maincommuter town.
Rabat was founded in the 12th centuryby Almohads. The city steadily grewbut went into an extended period ofdecline following the collapse of theAlmohads. In the 17th century Rabatbecame a haven for Barbary pirates.The French established a protectorateover Morocco in 1912 and made Rabatits administrative center. Moroccoachieved independence in 1955 andRabat became its capital.
Rabat, Temara, and Salé form aconurbation of over 1.8 million people.Silt-related problems have diminishedRabat's role as a port; however, Rabat,and Salé still maintain importanttextile, food processing andconstruction industries. In addition,tourism and the presence of allforeign embassies in Morocco serveto make Rabat one of the mostimportant cities in the country. It isone of four Imperial cities of Morocco,and the medina of Rabat is listed as aWorld Heritage Site. (source:wikipedia)
