When I left the US, I gave one car to my brother-in-law and the other to a nephew. My job in life is to help those whom I care about. Family helps family. Could I have added some money to my bank account? Sure. Would I have felt better with the money rather than the hugs from my family, absolutely not.

Yeah, but flying his son down to him and letting him drive up would make a lot more sense to me. My back hurt just watching that.

I was raised by parents the exact same way in principle! Mostly by my mom and grandma who lived with us. Dad preached the same but did the opposite, he always said do as I say not as I do! Now the tables have turned and I just had to tell my dad that he can’t come live with us! I’m flying out Wednesday to Mississippi to help my sister evict him from her property and he thought I was flying one way to help move his rv to my place in Tennessee! Since my mom passed he has been parked on my sisters property living in his class a rv, he blew through $250,000 dollars in life insurance and is now talking bankruptcy so she is ready for him to go b4 his coach gets repossessed and it’s even harder to get him gone! I turned the tables and used his life lessons that he gave us back to him! I told him that if he had invested the money and or used it to pay off all his debt including the coach then he wouldn’t be in his situation, but letting him move into my house with no means to support himself ( his social security is eaten up by a brand new truck payment and insurance) is a dead end to solving his problems and he needs to figure it out and get stable b4 my wife and would even consider letting him stay awhile. Cause right now it would inevitably be be more than a while and he refuses to let anyone look at his finances or listen to recommendations like selling the truck paying it off and using the rest to buy a used vehicle with cash thus freeing up $1200 a month that could go towards rent or a small camper payment! Being a kid of a father like that was hard, but being an adult and dealing with your father like that is hard enough without making it ten times worse!

My folks always taught us you're never so broke that you can't help someone. We weren't given everything either, we earned our spending money and bought and paid for our own vehicles plus upkeep. Our folks were always there if we needed it, sometimes stuff happens thats not your fault- we learned to figure our way out but just a couple of times they helped. Your helping Mick will teach him a lot. It's hard when there's just no vehicles to be had. You sure went through some beautiful country, here in Oklahoma we call them Buffalo as well. Glad you had a safe journey, thanks for taking us along. I believe Mick will make it, it just takes some figuring out- you two gave him great lessons to help him do that. Stay safe and GOD bless

I agree with you, but I'll add this, at 56 years old, I've found, that some of the greatest hands up, has nothing to do with Cash.. A phone call, a home cooked meal, just spending time together, listening without, trying to fix things. This list could go on and on, but it important to remember, when you treat people well. They will remember it in their darkest hours... The power of kindness, is something that will never be forgotten..

Enjoyed the ride-along to Alaska. My mind still boggles at the distances involved, especially through some rather beautiful but downright scary roads. You shared some solid wisdom too. I'm grateful that our three grown children are doing well and seemed to learn how to navigate life, marriage, and parenting. Despite our own foibles as parents, they turned out well and seem to have learned the good and filtered out most of the mistakes we made along the way.

Amazing video - no need to see the white knuckle snow storms but 70 mph speed up down the mountain was both exciting and frightening - great wisdom at the end - actions speak louder than words - if you are able and can help out in the short term in a practical and positive way - it speaks loudly as to where your heart is - and I am sure your huge effort will not be forgotten but accepted gratefully and will be passed on - not the never ending bank of Mum and Dad or a kind Uncle but a great way to show and demonstrate Love that needs no repayment but no doubt will leave a lasting, motivating and spirit enriching encouragement to someone in a particular short term tight spot - will watch again !!!☘

Drove that Alcan four times in the 1960s, first time in VW bug down to Texas in summer. Second and third in VW camper in winter and last time also in winter but only to Haines and caught the ferry to VC. Definitely preferred the winter driving - of course that was before they paved the road and it was so much smoother covered in ice. Did a whiteout on the last trip. I enjoyed your video, great memories. Stayed in Toad River on the first trip down...at that time you went in and picked an empty room and left the money on the table if you showed up after hours, which we did. No locks on any doors then.

A video from Black Spruce this morning and now this one. That makes for a good day! Whatever the “take two” thing was about I hope all is well.

Wow Mick looks just like you. Nice of you to take him the car. Too bad he couldn’t get his fixed. I grew up in Fairbanks. I’ve driven the Alcan 5 times, once in the winter going back up. I’d love to drive it again one of these years, maybe after I retire, take a nice long road trip to visit again. Take care.

Beautiful video, all of that talk about semis and driving in the winter gave me a chill down my back. I did that for 16 years for FedEx in upstate NY. The fact that I'd rather work a State Max Prison tells the story. I'd be interested in the pay for those drivers that you passed

Great adventure and great advice. My dad helped me growing up and I love it when I get a chance to help my kids. That’s what family is for. Dave, you should be teaching this course of being useful in all the colleges in America.

I agree with your sentiments-both about letting them figure problems out and about helping when you can. I’m relieved Mick has a vehicle now, and I’m sure he is very grateful to you for the loan.

I enjoyed this more than you will ever know. I have two offspring. One has never needed my help but always my encouragement and praise. The other always seems to fall short. I have helped that one more than I can even count. The first born will help anyone in need because he can. The other has never had the extra to fall back on so your advice is dead on. I hope young ones watch your channels and learn something. Hugs from Texas! Can’t believe I am freezing at 55 degrees! 💕

Vibes are tanks. My aunts has 340k miles on it and has been thr main errands vehicle for her farm since 2008. I don't know how if the back seats have ever been folded up for use 😂. No major problems to this day.

I felt every bit of this vid. Been there, done a lot of it in one way or another. Doing it as a parent is a whole other level. Every moment as a parent is a teachable moment and you’re a parent from their birth until your death. Thanks for sharing.

Your perspective about helping others is absolutely correct. My first car was an old boxy rambler. Had to check the gas and fill up the oil every day. Gas was $0.29 / gallon and oil was $!.00. It cost me $50 and a new carburetor. I used it for a summer painting houses. Life was good but I didn't know how good.
