The sheer amount of discarded goods is what astounds me.

also for tourist they rent bikes to tour the area, this one is common in Kyoto, Japan as well it’s called JCycle

@@ilsunnylo3562Five years later but the answer is, commuters can’t be bothered locking their bikes so it’s easier to rent one and be done with it, Chinese subways don’t have accomodations for bikes as they take up too much space so renting bikes is the only way to plug the gap between the subway station and place of work, also people might have cars but feel it is unnecessary to use it for shorter distances since parking in larger cities right now is way too expensive so renting a bike might be the way to go.

The actual manufacturing cost may be less than $15, and the labor and materials required to repair an old car, plus shipping containers, can cost a lot of money. Why not just sell new ones? Hello bike Foshan Phoenix OEM production base, assemble a car only 32 seconds, a month can do 40,000. I don't think we can repair so much in a month. Production can be mostly automated. Maintenance has to be done manually.

Apparently you don't live in the West and don't get around much, having no idea the depth of vandalism ingrained in Western culture. Go visit the New York subway or a public restroom, the graffiti left nothing to the imagination.

It's the service model that results in this type of behavior. Let the customers park it anywhere and the bikes are open to getting thrown into the river and bushes. And it's not just in China. Bike sharing in France had the same results and failed miserably, even worse as the parked bikes were often vandalized or stolen for parts.
