When something starts to make money in China, all of a sudden things go into OVERDRIVE! and everyone jumps onto the bandwagon! Nothing can demonstrate this China phenomenon more than the shared bike market that's exploded recently. Come find out what's blocking all the sidewalks in Chinese Cities!
Thanks to Camilo Koch for the Shanghai drone footage, his Instagram is: @caig
Mobike (Chinese Simplified: 摩拜单车, Móbāi Dānchē), founded and owned by Beijing Mobike Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese Simplified: 北京摩拜科技有限公司), is a fully station-less bicycle-sharing system headquartered in Beijing, China. It is the world's largest bicycle operator, and in December 2016, made Shanghai the world's largest bike-share city.
In June 2017, Mobike raised $600 million in Series E funding led by Tencent, bringing the firm's fund raising in 2017 alone to nearly US$1 billion. In the same month, the company is valued at US$3 billion.
Currently Mobike operates in over 160 cities in China and in four markets outside of China, which include but are not limited to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Ningbo, Xiamen, Foshan, Zhuhai, Changsha, Hefei, Shantou, Haikou, Deyang, Nanning, Guiyang, Xi'an, Wenzhou, Wuhan and many more. Operations in Singapore started on 21 March 2017.

Those rideshare bikes are popping up here (Seattle). They are still in the 'isnt that great' stage and not into the 'nuissance' stage yet. Its so tempting to get a pair of wire cutters and just make them free bikes.

Far from all Winston's videos are negative; in fact he always has many positive things to say. Actually, those things you mentioned - low crime rates, for example - he has done previous videos about. And haven't you seen any of the ADV China videos with Winston and C-milk? Or the Conquering Southern/Northern China videos? They've shown heaps of "nice rural sceneries [sic]" in those! I've seen every one of Winston's videos, and in fact it was his videos that inspired me to come to China to live in 2013, and I'm still here! If his videos were as negative as you claim, I wouldn't have come here!

In Melbourne as soon as they started becoming a problem the council started destroying abandoned bikes and charging companies fines. They just changed the rules for the companies with lots of strict restrictions and increased fines. They were not happy so I don't know if they will ban the bikes if still not controlled.

@theregnarute
@theregnarute 6 лет назад
Dr Aaron 301 is right. Although it still looks kind of sad that China is mostly doing a copy of what the Western world was doing 30-40 years ago. I'd much rather have it be way more spiritual, political and organizational development, and be way more different than the boom in western countries that happened at that time. Ie, they'd could have dived directly into sharing economy full on, from the individual and up. Instead is just plain old materialism and capitalism, nothing wrong with that but it's already everywhere and it's nothing new in the rest of the world, only new to 'post-communism' China.
@elinal855
@elinal855 6 лет назад
It's not really a mystery why they can sustain themselves... If you have a district of hotpot shops, this district will be known to have hotpot shops and will attract more customers. Although you might have some competition from your neighbors, the combined value of a place having a lot of the same thing will contribute to its 'brand'. It's kinda like why people go to Chinatown or Koreatown to get the 'authentic' cuisine instead of maybe down the street where the owners may also be Chinese or Korean natives. The brand value that comes with having one thing in excess in one location will help generate foot-traffic, because people will think that the products sold there will be of higher quality, and have the variety of choice.
@Ben-mu3ji
@Ben-mu3ji 6 лет назад
True, although It's not just about people thinking it's better. With that much competition in one area I'm sure they would all be good restaurants as a result. Otherwise people would just go to the other 20 places in the same street.
@RustOnWheels
@RustOnWheels 6 лет назад
This is actually common practice and basic economic knowledge all over the globe. Restaurants are where other restaurants are. Home improvement shops are where other home improvement shops are. Also his other point is also quite universal. The whole Western economy is based on people wanting (to do) what others do. Who doesn’t own a smartphone? And you know how the crash of 2007 was due to everybody thinking it is a great idea to buy a house and invest? One big bubble. Here in the Netherlands people grow up believing a house is an investment, a cash cow, not something to live in. A perpetual bubble.
@RustOnWheels
@RustOnWheels 6 лет назад
The biggest difference with other countries and China is all those small privately owned shops selling one thing only. Almost every street in the vicinity of the city center will have garage box shops, narrow and deep, full of one purpose items. A shop for pipes, a shop for LED shop signs, a shop for plastic strainers, a shop for wooden chairs… And the noise & lights is something typical China too, I agree. I have been to China multiple times between 2012 and 2016 in cities like Xi’an, Chengdu, Nanchong and Shanghai. I’ve really came to love the country a lot although the bad trades of the country make me glad to live elsewhere. Chengdu is one of my favorite cities though, it’s more laidback.

Here's my LA Times op-ed I sent Winston a couple of days before he made this video. articles.latimes.com/2009/may/05/opinion/oe-pollock5 Received neither a reply nor acknowledgement, yet it seems to have stimulated much of the discussion in the video---copycat culture, restaurant ideas being replicated, etc. Not a huge deal, but it strikes me as a bit ironic amid his complaint that parts of his video were co-opted by a Dutch news site.

Ditto, the GDS shots are just beautiful. You've definitely gotten smoother too over the past few years with the nice slow wide shots of areas that pan slow enough to see all SORTS of details and it's overall just a nicely edited smooth performance. Ever thought about making a combination video JUST of GDS segments stitched? My wife and several of her former co-workers who sometimes use 2 or more monitors on their work PCs will often have the unused screen playing (silently) drone videos just like those that simply go from scene to scene for an hour or more. Like a window to the outside world for those who are trapped in cubicles or stare at screens all day in place of a blank screen/boring screensaver.

I suggest interviewing old and young people from all walks of life about their life, their opinions and future perspectives. The interviews do not have to be political or critical to any system. Many like myself have had great enjoyment in listening to grandparents talking about the days when they were young. And I don’t mind listening to today’s politicians talking about their views, although I might not agree with them. Can it be done? Good luck with your work.

I came up with a great plan a couple weeks ago. A woman I know here in China, said she wanted to start a business. And while we were driving around, I suggested she start a pressure washing company. Of course she didn't know what it was, but still the idea is perfect. It will only take one person starting 1 pressure washing company, cleaning buildings and sidewalks... and soon the entire country will be spotlessly clean after everyone else copies it and started doing it for pennies on the dollar.

Great video. I was wondering how does it work the shared bikes use. Do you need to go pay somewhere and get a ticket for a certain time or just grab a bike when you see it with others and use it? Also, where do you drop it off when you are done?
@damirko
@damirko 6 лет назад
Nice, thank you for the info Dr. Aaron. Also, where would or should you leave it when you are done using it?

They need deposit about $15-30, directly transferred from using mobile pay (WeChat etc). As long as you ride less than 1 hr each time, you almost no need to pay extra. The deposit stays with the bike company, until you withdraw. There are smaller companies have already bankrupt in this crazy shared bike competition.

China is employing a lot of soft diplomacy in Africa with big infrastructure projects. Why don't they just take all these bikes they are collecting off the streets and donate them to people in the African countries where they are working?

I have to disagree Jie Zi. Winston does have a lot of real world knowledge in my opinion comes off more honest than someone with superiority complex. Although your argument was well thought out and I appreciate the honest comment, but I believe that you're looking at Winston from a cultural point of view which is hard to see though the eyes of someone who is a native of China. However, I may be guilty of the same as I read and respond to your comment. That's ok though, that's how we begin to understand each other.

I"ve really noticed that mentality in place when it comes to overseas tourism destinations. There is this remote part of Ontario Canada several hours drive from Toronto called "Bruce Peninsula" where you'd almost never see a Chinese person in the small town there. . suddenly some Chinese people found it and must have broadcast their discovery the "hive" network back home in China and I was totally surprised last year to find Chinese tourists all over the town. It's a great thing for those tourist areas of course. . as long as there is no serious environmental impact. Some tourist attractions become victim of their success and lose their attraction.

Love the video. We love bikes here in San Diego, CA, USA also. What you said about one Chinese person attempting to copy another in business success reminds me a bit of your Chinese piracy video. You said something about the culture being inspired to copy a masters work until their own work is worthy of creating a masterpiece. Something like that. Fascinating.

In Gwinnett, County, Georgia, we have sort of a "Little China", "Little Korea", "Little VietNam", and so on. Over the years, we have had waves of interesting Pho shops (Vietnamese), Hot Pot (Chinese and Vietnamese), Mexican restaurants, and Coffee Shops (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean) and so on. Additionally, we have many sorts of markets stores, some small, some large, the larger ones covering most Asian cuisines, Pacific, Indian, and Latino.

I think the "same store on the same block" is actually a worldwide phenomenon, i saw this video on youtube that explains why stores of the same service are always beside each other. It has something to do with the amount of customers per space a store takes up. If the stores would not be across from one another, then one store would potentially take up more of the customers than the other, thus it forces stores to be back to back in order to share customers.

Seems to be the way things get done in Asia. One guy sets up a t-shirt shop, next you have sixteen t-shirt shops in a row.

Bike share works here in Miami, mostly because you have to give them your credit card info to even get one out of their bike rack, it then charges you every 30-60mins you haven't returned it.

It's funny, those orange bikes with the mage wheels have been showing up recently around the area I travel to and work in (London UK). I didn't know what they were at first, they were just left randomly by the roadside, but after taking a closer look I figured they are shared bikes. It's funny to see them just in the middle of the roadside, abandoned. If they are still around when the warmer weather comes I might contemplate giving them a try.
