In this guitar lesson I show you what I use in place of the Hipshot for a "Drop D" tuner for my low E string, which is a tuner that was originally designed for banjos. The tuner has 2 set screws that "lock" the tuner at two points, allowing you to turn the tuning knob back and forth very quickly to go to your E to D tuning.

I have never seen enyine do this before and being an amateur luthier myself, will be putting that on my next build. Thanks for sharing this. I been staring at vids of him and wondering wth that back peg was all about. Surprised more metal guys don’t use them

@@Tiago_007 No changes were required for my installation .. no new holes or enlargement of existing hole was required .. At least, that was my experience. I’ve used the tuner for about 3 gigs now and it works as anticipated. Quite a time saver!
@CountryGuitarChops
@CountryGuitarChops 2 года назад
@@Tiago_007 You do not have to drill extra holes to mount the tuner, but depending on the size of the original tuner hole, they may had had to drill that tuner hole out to a larger size for the schaller to fit. If so, you would have to shim the hole in order to install the original tuner back. They also make bushings that you can use to shim the larger hole.

Robert Mcdaniel you’re gonna have problems with any trem system that relies on all strings being tuned to pitch. If drop tuning to D makes the rest of your strings loose pitch, this won’t work.

To avoid strings sticking at the nut you need a roller nut. All pedal string guitars have roller nuts for that very reason.
@lyonsson6480
@lyonsson6480 4 года назад
Alan F Brookes really don’t need all that for a simple drop tuner. Making sure your nut is filed properly and adding a little pensile lead in the slot should do the trick.

Do locking guitar tuners not do the same thing that allow to tune down mid song? It has to be banjo tuners?
@CountryGuitarChops
@CountryGuitarChops 4 года назад
Yes, there are other types (hip shot) of drop tuners, but as I mentioned, the banjo tuner is most popular because they work the best. Look at Waylons tele, and also Marty Stuart's "Clarence", which belonged to Clarence White and is the original B bender tele with 2 banjo tuners, one on each E string.

Well, you could, but realistically you would have to change the strings to a heavier gauge the father down you detune the guitar. You could probably get away with tuning down to a C with 10 gauge strings, but anything lower than that the string would get too loose.

Royston Stiver Marty Stuart has it on low and high. As far as Waylon I can’t remember, he had 2 or 3 black leather bound telecasters.
@jdmyerscountry
@jdmyerscountry 4 года назад
As was said, yeah Waylon didn't use 2 of them on his Tele, but Clarence White did which makes sense given the fact he was a bluegrasser. As I'm sure you know, that was the first Parsons/White b-bender guitar and is now played amazingly by Marty Stuart. I've never really figured out who used the Keith banjo tuner on guitar first. It seems like Buck Trent would have popularized it with electric banjo but I stupidly did not ask Waylon when I was around him. I had the Keith tuner on my Tele for quite awhile and just like Waylon I prefer it over the Hipshot. Fender put them on his signature model which he didn't like for the same reason i don't. IT is on or off so you don't get the sound of the note bending down or up if you modulate or use it during a solo.

@CountryGuitarChops 3 года назад
Not worth a darn! I was using one of those plastic molded cases when I first installed the tuner, and I had to cut a hole in the felt and styrofoam to allow the guitar to lay in the case. I never did try fitting on in a vintage style hard case. But, everybody else had switched over to using bags by then, so I "jumped on the band wagon" and started using bags too, which solved the problem. Bags are just much easier to fold up and store on stage.

Two questions sir: Can i use the hipshot tuner to go from E to another note? Like C for example? And is it posible to change all of them to set the guitar from Standard tuning to an alternative tuning line DADF#AD, DADGAD, etc..? Thank you Sir!
@patsavage1245
@patsavage1245 5 лет назад
DADGAD would be easiest. Use 3 Lock tuners High E Low E and B(Both e's to D&E and B to A&B). Not worth doing it for DADF#AD where you are simply dropping one string from DADGAD(G to F#). I would live with that little inconvenience. Also, I sometimes simply put capo on upside down and omit bass E. Play a normal D and hey presto dropped D

You'll go a few cents sharp, due to the slight change in string tension. To most ears, in a live setting, it won't be noticed. If you're tracking, it will stick out like a sore thumb, but if you're cutting tracks, what's the chances of using a device like that? A trick I use, is after you detune to D, give the bar on your Bigsby a few downward love taps, that usually gets me close enough. It's not like a Bigsby isn't a living, breathing, monster of it's own, that decides for itself what state of tune you'll be in.
@lyonsson6480
@lyonsson6480 4 года назад
Pretty easy to find out. Tune your guitar, then drop your E to D. Now check the rest of your strings. I know you can’t do it on anything with a floating trem, not sure how much the Bigsby relies on string tension bias.

I have a cheaper 75th Anniversary model (the silver metallic one), that would be better. But I'd have to take it to my Luthier. I'm also looking to replace the pickups in that one, especially the neck. But I'm on the fence for a good set, I'm thinking about a Twisted Tele set or the Brad Paisley set by Seymour Duncan... any recommendations? They sound like they don't match now, bridge pup is too icepickey and thin, and the neck is not clear, sounds dusty (if that makes sense) and not great at all. Any idea's? I know it's personal, but just some thoughts?

@@pjsnijdersmusic - I build my own pickups now, and have them in all my guitars. I used to like the SD broadcaster, but a customer sent me his .because he didn't like it. I could see why when I installed it, my first one was a stud, and his was a dud, they sounded totally different, and they aren't even wound to the original "broadcaster" specs.
