What's the fastest way to switch from Standard Tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E) to Drop-D Tuning (D-A-D-G-B-E)? Try the Pitch-Key, a small, simple, non-invasive add-on device for any guitar.
Robert pulls out his 1964 Gibson J-50 acoustic and his 1991 Heritage H-575 hollow-body electric and plays snippets from The Beatles' "Dear Prudence," Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." See and hear how the Pitch-Key works, what it costs and where to buy it.

@4:15 the extra play is called backlash, it's common with all screw thread operated mechanisms, there needs to be a tolerance or clearance for all threads to function without binding.

Pretty cool. What I'd love is a device that would quickly and accurately get me into double drop-D for that handful of songs. Getting both E strings tuned precisely down to D can sometimes be a bit of a buzz kill if things are rolling and you want to keep the momentum going.
@RobertCassard

Two pitch-keys will do the trick. You can put one of these on any string and the fine adjustment allows you to get the pitch shift perfect. Put one on high E and low E and you’re golden!

I think this is the best bang for your buck tuning adjustment The next best option is a timra string bender they're faster but more expensive. The fastest option that can be used in conjunction with the other 2 options is keith banjo tuners but they're expensive and can be slightly finky but it's my personal favorite. Personally I'm running Keith tuners for the quick adjustments and pitch keys for the stuff that didn't need on the fly changes. I swap between like 4 different tunings on the regular on a 7 string acoustic.
@RobertCassard

@@RobertCassard I've never uploaded anything but Alexander Misko runs a similar setup and he's a way better player then me. Alex is a percussive finger style player look up careless whisper or umbrella street. I use them to mainly swap between open g, dadgad, orkney/similar tunings. Being able to swap the b string in open g alone opens up a bunch of options if you go down a 1/2 step you're in gm another half step you've dropped down to an A which opens up a bunch of suspended options. If you tune up a half step you're in mountain minor which is another suspended tuning but probably my favorite. For my 7th string instead of running a low string, I added a high g string so if you're in open g you've got basically an extended range banjo. It's an absolute blast to play. Eventually one day I'll swap the pitch keys to timras, but this is just an expensive hobby for me lol

Hi robert, thanks for the review ! do you think it add weight to the head ? im thinking about buying 2 but im afraid it will add too much weight and add neck dive
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 5 лет назад
You're very welcome. Even though the Pitch-Key is made of metal, it's small and light. If I had to guess, I'd say about an ounce. I think using two of them would only add to neck dive if you already have that problem with a particular guitar. An effective way to combat neck dive is to use a strap with a sueded leather underside to create a bit of friction. The suede rubs and holds fast against the shoulder and prevents the neck from diving. This is especially helpful with guitars that are "all neck," like a Martin Backpacker. Thanks for watching!

Will this work on floating bridge strats? when you normally detune it puts every other string out of tune

Probably not, bigman. Because functionally, it's doing exactly what turning the tuning knob would - releasing tension to de-tune the string.

@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment, JT. The Hipshot extenders are cool, but a much more expensive and semi-permanent installation, too. Benefit of a Hipshot that it's a flip lever instead of a thumbscrew. If you need to switch to drop D instantly, get a Hipshot device. If you're switching to Drop D between songs or when you have 2-3 seconds between sections of a song, the Pitch-Key does the job just fine, with minimal hassle, for significantly less money.
@XxStonedImmaculatexX
@XxStonedImmaculatexX 3 года назад
@@RobertCassard I’ll give it some more thought. I play 1 song in drop d and I just want to not have to worry too much about manual tuning on stage even though I do use a pedal tuner. Trying to minimize the dead time in between songs!
@XxStonedImmaculatexX
@XxStonedImmaculatexX 3 года назад
@@RobertCassard what about “fine tuning”? I have a strat with a Floyd Rose which has a locking nut so sometimes, I need to loosen it to tune it better and use the fine tuners on the bridge to adjust, I also use an EHV D-Tuna for drop D and that needs a little tweaking as well. So for this Pitch Shift, I know it comes with a little Allen wrench to fine tune but how well can it hold tune without using locking tuners?
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 3 года назад
@@XxStonedImmaculatexX In my experience, once you set and fine-tune the Pitch-Key, it works the same way every time. That's not to say that your E string will remain in tune. But if you have the E string in tune, and you've calibrated the Drop D pitch, the Drop D should be in tune whenever you turn the knob.
@RobertCassard

@Steve-cs8nd
@Steve-cs8nd Год назад
It will never beat a Bill Kieth D tuner because it’s useless on high E to G. No “Earls BreakDown” slurs mid tune unfortunately. In banjo even the thickest string is on .023 so you might not get a good span on it either. The thicker the string the great the pitch shift. High E barely gets a semitone. Also if you set you guitar to drop D then crank the hex key adjustment wisely you might be able to obtain a lesser turn as it adjust the downward throw of the cam. There is also a non invasive D tuner that changes both D strings on banjo from D to C and back, but if you obtain Earl Scruggs 5 string banjo method book he teaches you how to make your own cam system that is fantastic and is bare a quarter arc twist for the whole tone shift. Since really good quality Keith D tuners (because banjo players use them on the D strings to shift to C tuning and Sawmill etc) Cost 300 US a pair and Earls homemade cams twist into the side of the strings and are basically free but for you labour ( and you must drill the head stock but do the job well so what) and many guitar players are using these now. Google EARL’s BREAKDOWN to hear Earl slurring mid song Effect ( since the early 50s lol) I ‘ll have to have a better look at these but the free play and inability to shift fine strings only a semitone really limits their usefulness but as you say the are mainly for slacking off your bass D which is handy for 30 US but sadly will never be able to shift to DADGAD or anything flash and I can slack string to D by ear everytime after 55 years plucking pretty fast but doing so mid song is where the value is for the new generation acoustic tappers etc. and as Earl made his for. His are great; take a look you could easily suit them to guitar. He basically modifies a couple of planetary tuners with a cam that presses into the string from the side with two bar stops at the pitches. It’s all in his book. I’ll be making some for my new 5 string.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard Год назад
Right you are, Steve. The Pitch-Key is quite specifically for guitar and would be next to worthless on banjo. Plus, as you point out, it's not geared to instantly change the pitch - it requires too much twusting for a mid-song change. The Bill Keith D-Tuners are awesome, cuz who doesn't love a little Earls' Breakdown?! You did make me think of another guitarist's use for the Pitch-Key I hadn't before. Tune the guitar to DADGAD, put the Pitch-Key on the 3rd string with a half-step detune, and you can go almost instantly from DADGAD to Open D (DADF#AD) and back.

There’s no different than turning the tuner…
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 7 месяцев назад
I can see how you might think that but there IS a difference. The Pitch Key switches the pitch of a string quickly and accurately. Once you dial in the two pitches the first time, it switches between them with no guesswork or re-tuning. Helpful in very specific situations, when you need to raise or drop the pitch of a string quickly, for whatever reason.
