Modded them by putting tack around to seal the drivers properly. Considerate improvement. Essentially they require you to swap out the pads for angled pads and sealing of the driver should of have been done from factory not by the end consumer. Regardless they are good now... Smooth.

I wished I watched this review a year ago. Everything you said about this headphone agrees with my experience with the 5xx. I should have gotten a Sundara.

Glad I found this channel, where I'm actually learning something. Maybe I can get past my Best Buy Sony WH1000XM3 mentality simply because I actually know little about "What's out there" in IEM / Headphones. Appreciate the YT Opus sound quality upload too.

one thing he didn't consider about the power consumption is the sensitivity. of course they're hard to run they are a 93.5 sensitivity headphone! basically the lower sensitivity the more they take to run. I just wanted to say that to anyone who was considering getting these, theyre nice is you like highs but these aren't for bass heads but i rate em! nough said

a typical cheap(er) planar cans that rolls off quite early ..... i can see 100s coming up in 2nd hand market very soon

Definite roll off, William. No doubt. The sub bass completely drops out. I wont be keeping these, and I suspect I won't be able to sell them for much! But I'll do the Drop shootout first. I also have to get back to the ZMF. I've been burning them in off and on. (I had to produce my grandmother's 96th birthday video reel- so I've had my attention in other projects for the past week.) I've done a shootout that included the HD-6xx which is close in signature to the HD560. I don't have immediate plans to review the 560. Too much happening!

I think I agree with most of your review, although I really had more of a problem with the treble with my sources. It makes some songs very dry and sometimes does the same to electric guitars. I actually thought they have pretty good dynamics, almost as good as my sivga phoenix.

My he5se also has no bass presence unless I turn up the volume and it really slaps if I eq the bass shelf up. Its really strange how the bass can be soooo had then all of a sudden it can be amazing with the right source

I just changed to angled leather pads from ZMF and the bass improved ssssoooooooo much! :) good times, but yes.. agree with the stock assessment :)

Hi Jaycee, I ordered some of these headphones. How do you replace the pads? Ive looked all over the internet, and youre the first person ive seen who talks about pad replacement. Theres a lot of misinformation out there. Also, Hifiman's own website doesnt even list replacement pads for these or the Deva. I wear headphones most of the day typically, so its a big deal for me when buying a new set, as I at least like to throw my pads in the washer if I can, or ideally replace them.

Yeah same, they are harder to drive than my dt990 600Ohm. Still tho I was able to power them at 90% on my geshelli balanced amp. I don't think you need a $2000 amp but I am noticing a lot of bass distortion when I play them really really loud. I don't think thats the amp, I think its the drivers.

Zack, I almost left the distortion comment out, because no one else reported it. It's not prominent, but it is most certainly there. It sounds like it comes from around 10 o'cock and 2 o'clock in the imaging. I was wondering if it was a driver failure, but it happened on both sides. It's also not consistent. I won't notice it for periods, then a track will come on that excites whatever frequency is causing it-- and you get these hits of nasty distortion-- along with the clean parts of the mix. It's definitely an issue for me. Thanks for watching.

Lol, my starfields are definitely more fun to listen to, but I still have a better time with the he5xx because I really like how the all the mids are tuned.

Let's start with: Will an iPhone 11 drive the HE-5xx? Yes. And it's not the worst sounding thing I've ever heard (using Tidal as a source). Will it drive them well? You're pretty much maxed out on volume. The amount of noise in that signal is probably fairly high, but I didn't notice any distortion or artifacts in the sound. I was reasonably impressed with the quality out of the 11 Pro Max, it was a pleasant surprise, to be honest. Since the last video, I did plug these into my Woo Audio WA-5 and went to high gain-- that's 8Wpc-- and this headphone didn't mind at all. The more you give it the beans, the better it gets.

It will drive them, if you picked up a balanced cable. It's going to use every bit of the 800mW, ideally you want 1W or more for this headphone. I wouldn't even try to drive these with the stock unbalanced cable. The M15 will only 490mW with the standard 3.5mm jack.

@@DirectorsGarage Yeah I was planning on using an unbalanced 4.4mm cable but wasn't sure if the M15 was strong enough. I'm pretty much locked into getting the M15 I think because I hear a lot of positive from it. But I've struggled to find a pair of headphones I like lol. The sound staging and the clarity of the 5XX seem pretty good though.

@@MOTOJendays Have you considered used? At $1500ish you can pick up a used A&Ultima SP1000 these days. The players are so disposable, I look for a used deal and put the money into the headphones. Headphone wise, the lack of sub-bass and the pain of the amp requirements of the HE-5XX is a deal breaker, for me. I think the Drop Elex (though much more expensive) is the place to start. @@DirectorsGarage What advantage does the SP1000 have over the M15? Sorry for going off topic from the video haha. I was pretty set on the M15 since it got so much good feedback and what it provided for price. But I'm also not sure what A&K products have to offer other than people consider them to be the premium DAP provider.

@@yamin2000 Check out Focal and Sennheiser. Also Audeze. The HE-5XX require too much power and they do not isolate at all. My thoughts.

Clearly! But the point I was making is: You see 18 Ohms and you think it's gonna be easy to drive. Not always the case, but it's usually an early indication.
