In this video I show you how I clean my older metal drums and also talk about putting on new heads, including calf skin heads, on one of them.
I also change out the tension rods on both drums and show you how to get stubborn tarnish off of rims and lugs.
For demo purposes, I am using a Ludwig Black Beauty and a Pearl Steve Ferrone Signature snare drum. Both of these drums are finished in black nickel and are in need of a good cleaning as well as new heads, so I am taking this opportunity to show you how I do this.
In a follow-up video, I will play both drums for you and compare the Black Beauty to a close relative, a 1961 Ludwig Supraphonic COB snare.

About a year later here, *but I found one snare that the Eagle One Nevrdull works great on,* but its the "only" snare I use it on. I use it solely on my brushed aluminum 1981 Acrolite. The *Sounds Like a Drum* RU-vid channel recommended Nevrdull for the Acrolite in particular, and I can confirm that it brings it to new life. I bought the Nevrdull strictly for that snare alone, as I don't use it on my other snares.

*CONTINUED:* I saw on a forum from one who works @ Meguiar's say that #26 is not a cleaner, but a wax. My #26 came in yesterday, & I didn't see that forum till after I picked it up. *Anyways, the Meguiar's Gold Class is a gentle cleaner AND a wax combined.* I might try that next. Apparently #26 is supposed to be used *after* a given item is cleaned 1st, but hey, if it worked for you, then it must work. Trying it today. 🙂 *EDIT: Tried #26, & it does work great.*

Very timely. I just purchased a Remo fish head rig from a small store in Mass. on Reverb . Normally they sell for $174 but I offered $99 and they accepted . It came today and probably was at the store for many years as the tarnish on the jingles was quite heavy. Took 3 try’s to find the right brass cleaner. They probably could have sold it for much for if they had kept up the maintenance. It does shine now. Very good video.

Perhaps you could add a list of the product names. Seeing them on a small screen is difficult.

Many thanks for the info on the Meguiar's #26. I have a bottle on the way to my local Ace's. I'll be using that instead of Turtle Wax mixed with water. (I just hope the smell is subtle, or isn't overpowering & fades somewhat quickly). As for the hardware, I use Turtle Wax Chrome Polish & Rust Remover (meant for cars), which not only gets the hardware to a gleam, but it wiped off surface rust like dirt on my old 1986 Ludwig (USA). I'll stick with that, but looking forward to trying the #26.

great video! wish-list: would love to see you do a video on cleaning/polishing cymbals....nick.

Hi Nick I don't clean my cymbals. Just my drums. I think the dirt adds character. I know there are lots of products out there that will help you do that. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks for the video! Do you use the steelwoll also for cleaning wrap that has vanished and has years of dust and dirt? And what do you use to clean the inside of a wooden shell? And, last question: is there a way to remove really rusty parts on a rim or lug? PS the SF snare is great, I have one also :) kind regards Mike
@rickdior
@rickdior Год назад
Hi I don't use steel wool on the shells as it may scratch them. I use car wax and that works fine. You can use very fine steel wool on the hardware. There are lots of products to use to get the rust off. I dip some fine steel wool in WD-40 and use that on the rims. You can also soak the small parts in rust remover. Short of replating nothing will bring the original finish back.

really great channel, wish I had seen this earlier - I cleaned my black beauty with some kind of window cleaner, but it dissolved this dark tinted coating ludwig apparantly uses ontop of the nickel. what are my best options from here? for better looks I removed the coating completely now, the snare is visibly brighter and probably that layer wasnt only for darkening, but also offered some kind of protection?

Hi Simon Looks like you damaged the topcoat. You can have a really good auto paint shop strip and reapply it. Look for one that specializes in high end restorations. Never use harsh window cleaner like chemicals on these drums. They contain alcohol and other strong chemicals. Just wipe the drum down with a lint free microfiber cloth every once in a while, and that's all you need.

Hey Rick, great video! Do you every use your Meguiars wax on your wood finish drums? I have a ludwig bubinga with a poly finish and was thinking about putting some mothers Stage 3 pure carnuba paste to try to protect my shells, was wondering if it's safe to do so.
@rickdior
@rickdior Год назад
Hi Christopher I don't use it on my wood shells but I have used it on the few wrapped kits I have and it works great for that.

Hi Rick, thanks for all of your great tips and in depth look. Today I bought a 90's Tama Artstar Brass snare and it has some age marks, like pitting, but surface only. What do you recommend for polishing the shell. Would a car wax/polish work or maybe Turtlewax chrome polish? Thank you, sir! Gr Rick 😁
@rickdior

Hi Don't use car wax. Use Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish.

Any experience using a non- abrasive cleaner wax on a painted drum? Something like Klasse? or Four star? I'm asking bc No 26 is a wax, no cleaners. what do you use to clean an old painted shell? I could see using the No 26 after its clean... thank you! Love the content! can't find anyone talking about using auto detailing products. makes sense to me!
@rickdior
@rickdior Год назад
Hi Mike I have never cleaned a painted drum but any product you would use to clean a painted high gloss wall should work fine. Car wax is very safe as well.

Great stuff! I have a question! Are there any extra holes in your Ferrone Snare? I recently picked up a used one and there are two extra holes below the batter head and then there's one extra hole below the resonant head.

@@rickdior Thank you for your reply. I wrote Pearl and they told me, that the older ones have those holes due to the plating process.
