R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army. June 28th, 2020 . Ann was a big Nightwish Fan. And every new person who listened to NW, she went through a little chat. And gave them some info about NW. This was her favorite song. And this song belongs to her. I like very much that Gabriel have continue Ann s work.... so her heritage is still here.
Yes...I copied my first conversation with Ann. She was so nice, and so very helpful, since I had never heard of Nightwish. ( One of the many fantastic bands that I have discovered !) Here in the US..everything is all about Pop Music, and their Auto tuned voices, because most of them have no music skills at all! The concerts, if you can call them that, are all about the dancing on stage, and lip syncing the songs. At 65 years old, I still prefer the music I listened to growing up...Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Nazareth, Steppenwolf, Boston, Foreigner, and many others! But man, Nightwish is freaking amazing!
Very well done reaction Andrew. Jukka was a fantastic drummer but suffers from severe insomnia. He recommended that Nightwish bring on the drummer who he had studied under, Kai Hahto from Wintersun, as his replacement. Although not as showy as Jukka, Kai is the human metronome. Loved this whole Wacken (Vack-en) 2013 concert. By the way, Nightwish is killing their current world tour. My wife and I saw them live in San Francisco on May 18th. Their full sunset concert video from Hellfest 2022 has been viewed more than 2.5 million times in 3 months. And a couple of weeks later, their concert at the Deichbrand 2022 concert was even better quality. The fully remastered video (60FPS) and High Bit Rate Audio is beautiful to behold. Should you wish to check it (starting with the Kai Hahto drum solo intro), here are the links to the full setlist: Deichbrand 2022 Setlist: Kai Hahto Intro ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Noise ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Planet Hell ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Tribal ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Elan ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Storytime ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html How’s The Heart ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Dark Chest of Wonders ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html I Want My Tears Back ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Nemo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Sleeping Sun ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Shoemaker ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Last Ride of the Day ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Ghost Love Score ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Greatest Show on Earth ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html Ad Astra Outro ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QvQy3Id8z-s.html
For any drummer (like myself) you should watch Kai Hahto’s drumcam from a drum clinic playing Son’s of winter and stars. It’s a song from his previous band Wintersun. By the way Jari Mäenpää from Wintersun is also a genius song writer. Here’s a link to the drumcam: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tbb8m3wNXbs.html
This is my favorite Nightwish song. All matches here: beautiful lyrics, melody, singing...both Marko and Floor. And man I love Jukka's drumming and his style. Not the current Nightwish drummer because of his imsomnia at that time. But I never forget Jukka 😥❤🤘
in this band there are no egos, everything for the music, real professionals. Nightwish collaborates with London symphonic orchestra and choir. Tuomas (piano) is the brain (both music and lyrics).Jukka was later replaced by Kai, due to health problems, but he is still close, but in the background.🤟🏻🤟🏻🎶🎶
@@NPK476 No egos but once he presents the songs to the band, they have input from there and it's encouraged. Love that everybody in the band works so hard in service to the music and fans and nobody showboats.
"awesome musicians and are very tight , sound great and fantastic vocals"... and all that is harnessed to tell amazing stories for the people who wants to hear stories... 👌
3:13 Wacken Open Air is one of the biggest heavy metal festivals in the world (limited to around 80000 tickets due to organisational/logistical reasons). It's located in Northern Germany.
Thanks Andrew for the reaction. You are one of the few musicians that i watch regularly on YT and appreciate your feedback. Keep up the great work. Growing up a fan of Neil Peart and RUSH, i have always been a little biased, but both Jukka and Kai are killer drummers. Nightwish Army from Frisco, TX, USA, checking in...
Indeed, and Marco has a band called Northern King with 4 lead singers, so if you want to see him singer more and plus another 3 amazing vocalists, check Northern Kings out! (=
I really have almost run out of adjectives. What a performance, they all look so relaxed. Comfortable in their own skin. And I've never seen a hint of ego with NW. They are all working so very hard but you would never guess. Makes me think of the Kate Bush band circa 1979. Not because of the obvious but because every show was a huge theatrical experience. Performed by virtuoso musicians, who were normal everyday mortals. Ok, I probably managed a few adjectives after all ! ✌️❤️Peace and love as always ✌️ ❤️
I loved your video. First the memes and the funny editing is brilliant 😂😂😂😂 Second, thank you for giving Jukka some recognition. Even now that he doesn’t play with the band anymore I love when people recognize his amazing talent. He is a mood, he plays the drums with all his body and is so entertaining to listen/watch. From this same concert I would love to react to “Romanticide”, “She's my sin” and “Dark chest of wonders” although the whole concert is amazing, they were on fire that day🔥
Only found them a year ago, but say them in May. Greatest show I have ever seen in my life! The musicianship and vocals are unrivaled. So tight, and amazing arranging and composition. You nailed it too - they are a team, and they are all only putting in what the song needs and no more, but there are many subtleties layered all over in there.
I concur, also Romanticide from Wacken 2013 is something in terms of drums but I would love to see you react to much more Nightwish because I love to see the other perspective of you as a drummer
If you want to hear an incredible vocal performance by the bassist Marko, you’ve GOT TO check out their cover of High Hopes by Pink Floyd. It’s glorious.
Their tribute to Pink Floyd is so great, even David Gilmour is a fan! It's live from End Of An Era 2005...a.very intense concert bc the band fired their original female lead singer after the show. Marko delivers a powerful and haunting vocal backed by superb musicianship!
Marko is a way better vocalist than Gilmour and it really shows in this song. You can hear the pain of things to come throughout the song (firing the lead singer). But as good Marko is, the real star for me in this song is Emppu, he is phenomenal.
@@littleraven28 oh totally! His guitar work is masterful! Looking at the concert as a whole...the entire band poured their souls out into each song. We're so lucky to have it on video...a major part of Nightwish history.
Marco Hietala, the bassist left the Band 2021.He's also a singer by the "Northern Kings".When you want to hear him singing high, listen the song "The phantom of the opera" from Nightwish. Greetings from Germany
I'd classify "Northern Kings" as more of a temporary super-group, but Marko is also the lead vocal/bass/acoustic guitar in the band "Tarot" which he and his brother founded back in 1982, Nightwish was founded 1996! It's never made big waves outside Finland but it's well respected and the competition over there is fierce, Finland has the most Metal bands per capital of any country (Germany has more in total due to way bigger population). He's also one of the main "characters" in Ayreon's "The Theory of Everything" album. The Range Planet and other sources lists his Pantom performance as containing a confirmed G#5.
My favourite song to watch Jukka from this concert is “Storytime!” He’s always physically involved with his drumming but in that song he levels up. A comment I hear from many reactors is how all the musicians in Nightwish play in such a way that the serve the song, or music. A really great comment.
The second part, the poetry, is on the original studio album and has been spliced onto this live performance for a video. This concert has 15 songs with the singer Floor Jansen only with them for ten months and absolutely nailing it. Jukka ( yukka) retired at the end of this tour due to his severe insomnia. Kai took over as already a drum tutor, drum tech and playing in Wintersun.
@@RossNixon actually is Great poetry and is done by Tuomas in the style of the long poem with the same title as the song which in a way inspired the song
Wacken is a municipality near the town of Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Wacken was first mentioned in 1148, but there were probably some settlements before, which is proven by the trove of Germanic artefacts.
85.000 metalheads gather every year in Wacken (Germany), from all over Europe (100.000 now) WE ARE THE NIGHTWISH ARMY :) and proud of them. Yukka was an awesome unique drummer, but suffered from insomnia and migraine (can you imagine drumming with migraine? He did it) He couldn't do it anymore with pain in his heart and introduced his good friend, Kay from Winter Son. Kay is also called the human metronome..a killer drummer. I saw them live many times and this is exactly how they sound. No mixing. They never screw up, all the tones are correct and their energy is amazing. They are a tight team without ego's. The guitarist Emppu does not have to shred all songs, many song don't even have a solo, the bassplayer does exactly what the song needs....they all do. No one stand out and together they are brilliant and insanely good. That's true muscisianship.
R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army. June 28th, 2020 This is your song. If you ever have to explain the Groove in Metal to someone - play this tune. Until the Breakdown hits you with a 10 ton hammer it is all fun and games. But then the slow chugging monster with the machine gun riffing takes over. And for every Metal Head this lights up the day. Awesome….Imho one of the best songs ever. Sometimes the sky is piano black…. Floor Jansen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Valkyries and Stonehenge, Lady of Nightwish and Protector of our Metal Realm. Long may she reign. Bow, mortal !
The "correct speed" refers to not using the audio from the official BluRay release which has 4% slowdown in the audio without resampling (and hence A is no longer 440 Hz). When that BluRay was released the spec didn't yet support 25 fps video that the original concert was shot with. The Nightwish video in this video looks a bit jittery, too, because this video is 30 fps which obviously cannot playback 24 nor 25 fps video correctly.
Wow this is crazy. I was looking at more Nightwish songs to request before I saw this. You're on a fantastic run for me personally and I love your content! Jukka has been one of my absolute drummer heroes since I was 12, even before picking up the sticks.
Very cool to have your son doing the opening for you! Wacken is in Germany and the W is pronounced more like a V sound,,,,so more like Vaacken! Surprised you haven't done more NIghtwish as their list of quality songs to react to is very long, and quite varied! Cheers for the video, and the journey!!
Loved the analysis. Personally I always kind of preferred Jukka's style to Kai's. More similar to Larkin of Godsmack. Interesting choice of song for Jukka however --- many would say his performance in the classic "Ghost Love Score" at Wacken (same concert) was even more dramatic (especially the last 30 seconds or so of the song). I hope you have a chance to get to it some day!
Nightwish as a band is the composers instrument. Toumas who writes this stuff is basically playing them. They are the perfect instruments for his vision. To me that is what you are hearing. Complete humans working as prosthetics for a genius mind.
Been a fan of Nightwish since I was a teen back in 2003. Their album "Once" blew my mind. Jukka has always been one of my favorite drummers in metal. Kai is also amazing but Jukka brings a certain intensity that even shines through on their studio albums. So good to see them getting such high praise over the internet 🙌
Thank you " Andrew Rooney Drums" from Germany! Night wish is one the best live-bands ever. And Floor Jansen is a great singer all time! Wacken Open Air= W:O:A with 82.000 Metalfans 2013 and 2022 sold out. Wacken is near Hamburg/Germany.
Wacken is a tiny little town in Germany that's noteworthy for one reason only, the Yearly Wacken Rock Festival. the population of Wacken is about 1.800, about 80.000 rockers visit the Wacken Festival.
If you were impressed with Marco's vocals, listen to Northern King is a super band also from Finland, with 4 amazing singers and they created Symphonic Power Metal interpretations to classic 80's songs, it's simply breath taking! Marco is one of the singers, there is also, Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica, Jarko Ahola from Terasbetoni and Juha Pekka Leppaluoto from Charon.
Just so you know Marco can go even higher if needed, but there are no egos in this band, their main objective is to make beautiful songs. And Floor could of taken this song for herself but wants song to be an collab between every band member
Hi Andrew, Nightwish Army here, German Division. Greets from Hamburg. Wacken is a small village in the northern Germany. But there is every Year the greatest Heavy Metal Concerts world wide. I was there 2013 and see Nightwish with other 82thousands fans live. It was the best Concert I've ever been to.
Jukka often reminds me in a special way of Scott Rockenfeld of Queensryche. Just like Scott, he has his very personal, yet subtle approach to everything, with great finesse, always interesting coloring. And he also lives intensely through every moment of every song.
I really enjoyed your reaction. Almost every video that will be recommended to you will be to a live link. I've never had the opportunity to attend a concert, but they've been described as transcendent. Everyone in the group works hard to make each song the best it can be as a group effort (band members and crew). There's no showboating involved. And you can tell that they love each other, the fans, and what they do. Jukka and Kai are very different drummers, but each is a master of his style. I enjoyed the reactions you did to Kai in Nightwish and Wintersun but didn't subscribe then because I found them recently and you never got back to Nightwish. I'm subscribing today based on this reaction and hope to see more of both Jukka and Kai.
Understanding you're a drum guy...Jukka (pron: Yoo-kah) is a very physical drummer, so fun to watch! Andrew, what you missed was a multi-voiced spoken word poem inspired by Walt Whitman. The reason this is an extended version to include that, is that the late Mother of The Nightwish Army, Ann W....this was her favorite song. There is a dedication to her with the poem. Whenever this song is reacted to, we all pay her alittle respect, in our own ways, and in the comments.
Such a great song. Please do more Nightwish. They have had 2 excellent drummers; Jukka from the beginning until 2013, then Kai Hahto. Check out Storytime next perhaps; there is a cool, complicated section in the middle that Jukka created & Kai said he worked hard to duplicate. Another band you should check out is Unleash The Archers - their song Awakening is great and drummer is fast!
Hello Andrew from Auckland! Great reaction again to Nightwish! They are indeed world class, and play for the music not for ego. Their music is all original, and composed by Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards). He is a genius composer, and poet of our time - he doesn't write songs, he creates art. Nightwish' music is an experience, that once had, you will never forget. They are all invidually gifted musicians, (and humble), who have worked very hard to reach that stratospheric level your senses now get the sublime pleasure of experiencing. No two songs are the same, and they all tell a story. Take a leap into the pool of Nightwish' masterful music, you'll be glad you did. Looking forward to more reactions :)
If you want to see "the bassist" sing even higher try nightwish's cover of phantom of the opera. Marko was lead vocalist in band Tarot and 2years ago won masked singer in Finland
PLEASE DO MORE NIGHTWISH! you can not pic any wrong song they played live and both drummers are amazing, greets from a Nightwish army member from west Germany 🤘 ps : subscribed and wait for more to come 🫶
Sadly Jukka had to stop in 2014 as a drummer with the band because he suffers from insomnia for years, but .... he's still with the band behind the screens. Jukka found a very good replace, ent for the band in his friend Kai \Hahto, who also plays in the band Wintersun (watch *_"Sons of Winter and Stars"_* (live rehearsels at Sonic Pump Studios: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tl5T-glTdXw.html&ab_channel=WintersunJari ) Maybe also interesting for you the Dutch band Epica (drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek): EPICA *_"Universal Death Squad"_* - Drum Playthrough by Ariën van Weesenbeek: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pu3vNcUp1rk.html&ab_channel=EPICA Original song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P_Ys_W7ySkM.html&ab_channel=EPICA EPICA - *_"Abyss Of Time"_* - Drum Playthrough by Ariën van Weesenbeek: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ht0qeqUMIaQ.html&ab_channel=EPICA Original song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sTbk3SfUq9Q.html&ab_channel=EPICA
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Right On män! 🤩👌💥💯 If you're staying on at everything what's "familiar" and "comfortable" for you on the route of your life this all might get boring. Whether it's listening those few bands/artists in music, "stick on"* music out of all arts, eating the same sort of food day by day all the way through on your earthly journey, etc. Getting to know the unknown could be quite liberating despite the unknown could be intimidating. Such a cool reaction to one heck of an awesomeness of their tasty repertoire and Keep on rockin with this magical band!!! 😈👍 Congrats in advance for the 100k subscribers !!!! Been watching loads of your reactions and it's always entertaining and kinda amuzing (in a charming way) when Andy gets excited. Cheers from Finland, the Mother Land of Nightwish 🤟😎 🇫🇮 💙 🎼
Man I miss Jukka on drums. He is absolutely one of the best in the world IMO. Just phenomenal, I'm so glad I got to see him live before he left the band. Kai is great but there is something magical about Jukka's drumming especially in this show.
Andrew & & NW Fans...all must have heard by now that that Floor was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Prognosis is good, she goes in for surgery tomorrow. Those of us attending shows on the European tour, let's all wear pink to show Floor our love and support. .
You said it right , these are very professional musicians making mature decisions on stage. Nightwish is as good as it gets. I am a fan for ten years now and its been one hell of a ride...a journey for sure. Good video, enjoyed your take on things.
This is one of my all time favorite NIghtwish songs. This whole concert is the same quality, it's probably one of the best concerts ever recorded. They were headlining this festival and the 82.000+ people who were there were certainly lucky to be there. Floor (the singer) had just joined the band 10 months prior and most of Europe had not seen her perform with the band live. They absolutely killed it. In fact they kill all their live performances, if you ask me they are always better live than in the studio. Jukka is one of a kind, but they all are and that includes Kai. For more Marko vocals listen to their tribute of HIgh Hopes. Enjoy your journey into the catalogue, they have a lot of all different, but all great music, all killer - no filler. 🤘
Hey Andrew, how goes it? Jukka also has massive migraine headaches during this show but still showed flawless drumming. It was a combination of insomnia and migraines that lead him to leaving Nightwish but does still work with them behind the scenes. Love your reaction videos by the way. You seem so humble like on your reaction to Danny Carey of TOOL. Please check out more Nightwish as they are a phenomenal band. Have a great week ahead.
While there are some drumcams by Kai around, there is nothing to be found from Jukka, but fans have made this tribute to Jukka: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gXYAmIgQnak.html
Wacken is a small town in north Germany not far from the Germany-Danish border and NNE of Hamburg. And It's pronounced Vacken. Wacken Open Air is a huge rock festival. That night there were 82,000 in the audience. Also, in Northern Europe, a "J" is pronounced as a "Y". So it's Yukka. The singer is Floor Jansen last name pronounced Yansen.
This somehow just showed up today as a suggestion and knowing this song and Nightwish very well I had to watch it. This was song 14 on the setlist of 15 in front of 82.000 people, who basically heard the singer for the first time. (She joined them only 10 months before when the old singer left) This is a festival and they were headlining it. I'm sure everyone who was not a fan became it there and then. The whole concert is this quality, I think it's one of the best live performances ever recorded. Jukka is beast on the drums, but everyone was up to par. People already suggested Devil and the deep dark ocean (Beunos Aires 2018) I'd like to add Weak Fantasy (Tampere 2015) that song starts with a drum solo, you'll like both a lot🤘🏽
@@glendawatson331 bugger! Oh well, the way money is getting stretched at the moment it’s probably just a disappointing thing and life will go on, and not a first world bad thing. Doh still.
Great reaction, love your editing too - genuinely made me laugh out loud more than once. I'm a big Nightwish fan - you really can't go wrong with any of their songs. However one I will recommend: Romanticide 'cos it has (in my non-drummer opinion) some awesome drumming (along with everything else). It's also relatively short for a Nightwish song. Another (and often the one reactors start with when first listening to Nightwish) would be Ghost Love Score (from the same 2013 Wacken concert (which takes place in Germany I believe)) - but that one's longer at over 10 minutes (of pure awesome). Even get to see Jukka use his chimes in that one ;).
Its mind boggling how their timing is just perfect for the entirety of a concert. Sure, In-Ears with ticker. But that's easy to learn and very hard to Master
Excellent reaction my friend. I almost bailed due to the silliness at the start, glad I stayed around for your very knowledgeable reaction. Both Nightwish drummers are top notch; Kai is a machine, but Jukka was an enraged Viking attacking the music. I would recommend Ever Dream from the same concert (I omitted the link, RU-vid seems to be displeased by them) where the outro is just drum insanity, plus they have some good shots of him in action. And on Romanticide, he hits the cymbals like they owe him money. On a different note, you might enjoy the Sabaton drummer Hannas von Dahl's drum cam. Search (obviously) hannes van dahl drum cam. BTW, he is married to the Nightwish lead singer, Floor Jansen. Again, thanks for the informative reaction. Keep rocking🤘🤘🤘
Welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal. Tuomas (keyboard player) writes 85% of the Nightwish music and lyrics. They come together after listening to his original base tracks to add their flair and finalize Tuomas's creation. He then composes the symphonic and choral elements and works with groups like the London philharmonic to record the backing tracks that they use in their live performances. That is why you'll often hear the Nightwish Army refer to him as "the Metal Mozart".
Finally, someone acknowledges the Doppler effect! On more than one occasion, I've heard musicians lament a crowd's inability to clap in rhythm. I always make the argument that, unless it is a particularly small venue, it's more likely the Doppler effect is at play. Alas, no one ever seems to agree with me. LOL
Great commentary and reaction!!! You got my subscription!!! I highly recommend more Nightwish reactions- another one with great drum work is live version of Devil and Deep Dark Ocean. Another phenomenal symphonic metal band is Epica- I highly recommend Consign to Oblivion at Zenith in Paris.
Hi Andrew, great reaction to my favorite band and one of my favorite songs. I watch RU-vid all the time and I never saw your channel come up before ‼️ anyway I am happy it did and I subscribed to your channel. I checked out some of your playlists but I couldn’t find Ayreon. I think you will like it, it’s by a Dutch composer, singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen. It’s prog rock. He is in the business for over 40 years. He uses Ed Warby for his drums. Ed is also Dutch and a very good drummer imo. May I suggest for your first introduction to react to “ The Day That The World Breaks Down “ it’s a concept album featuring 11 great singers. It’s not live, but you can do their live music later. You can see Ed on drums, no samples ‼️ Enjoy 🫶🤘🇳🇱
There was an interesting thing going on drumwise at the beginning. The verse was in 7/8 and Jukka was hitting the snare drum on "two" during the first run, and didn´t adjust for the second run, but kept the same pattern, which shifted the snare hit to the "one". I´m not sure if this is understandable, I´m not a drummer, and English is not my first language, but I hope you ´ll get my point.
You should watch their Storytime. There's a nice drum solo in that song. It's not the fastest of drum solos but Kai Hahto (of all people) calls it "a little tricky".
