Mascots are thing in Japan, he is playing a kids concert. But the person was hired specifically as a drummer tho I don’t know if they knew to what degree The name is Nyango Star. A portmanteau of Nyan, Japanese for the sound a cat makes, and Ringo, Japanese for Apple with the added level of Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles. The viral explosion has lead to them starting their own metal band with other mascot characters named Charamel. Ever see a bassist play with oven mitts?

As said below, Nyango Star is a mascot for an apple growing city in Aomori prefecture. To explain the name (I am half Japanese, btw) - costume is meant to look like a cat/apple hybrid because: Ringo Starr the drummer, "ringo" being the very similar japanese pronunciation of "apple". And "nyan" is the Japanese sound for a cat's meow. Hence the drummer now being Nyango Star. Lol I also have a theory as to who it is based on playing style, but I do not want to let the "cat out of the bag" in public. ;)

I have seen that 'overqualified' video no less than a dozen times, and I'm on the floor laughing every time!! What impresses me the most is that he's still in rhythm to the song, but filling every possible space with insanity - all while wearing that cumbersome cat suit! That cannot be easy - my guess he is going entirely by feel as visibility has GOT to be limited - and if that's so, then even higher props! Just imagine how good he is without the suit. Indeed, I hope that 'crucified' drummer is okay!

You don't really need to look at your kit while playing after enough practice, most drummers on a set they know could quite easily play with their eyes closed. It's a "feel" thing~

He calls himself "Nyango Star" and has been performing his intense metal drumming in Japan. His dream is to bring smiles to the faces of people all over Japan, including small children and the elderly, so he travels to shopping malls and playgrounds all over the country and even appears on TV shows! But it's always only the swarthy guys in bands that make him smile... In reality, it's a far cry from the ideal. (It is also important to note that metal is a popular music in Japan.)

@@TheKyrix82 It is true, Nyango Star was reborn as half an apple, half a cat. The name is after the drummer Ringo Star and nyan is just the japanese version of meow. So this apple-cat tries to become famous, reach hollywood and be transformed back into a real cat. As Ringo Star was her role model, she got by the name Nyango Star and started drumming. It is a well known and cute folk lore in Japan.

From the Cross smashed Drummer vid: Honestly, we had in-ears in. Didn’t hear it. Drums are in the back, behind everyone. EVEN after I (the worship leader on acoustic) turned and saw the 'drum shield collapsed', I didn’t realize it was the cross laying on him at first. We were all in shock! His name is Nyango Star, he is the reincarnation of a cat who was buried in an apple field, leading to the fusion of apple and cat. A spirit told it that it had to go to Hollywood to be fully reincarnated as a cat so it picked up the drums to become famous. I don't know what it is called musically around 5:54 in the reaction video but that sudden shift to an almost empty style of drumming really impresses me after all the seemingly frenetic drumming before and after. He is a solo drummer. To increase his marketability, he created a character called 'Nyango Star' who plays drums while wearing doll clothes. He also created a brief backstory for his own cat character, a story involving his own local apple. And he calls himself the local apple mascot, but it is not an official character of the local government. He has been promoting himself on the Internet, and has gained popularity through such efforts and is being called to various performances. He transforms his various melodies into metal and gained popularity with this concept.

Nyango Star is an apple cat who is like the sponsor of a region that grows apples. He is part of the metal band called Charamel. In Japan its not uncommon for this sort of thing and they go with the idea that there is no-one in the costume and its not done to ask who he is.

Ringo Starr would be an ironic alternative name for Nyango Star, since "Ringo" means "Apple" in japanese and Nyango Star is supposed to be a cat apple! xD

Btw, the song Nyango annihilates is the theme song to "Anpanman", who’s a Japanese kids superhero whose replaceable head made of a sweet bean bun (regularly baked by one of the other character, Uncle Jam) can be fed to hungry friends. No, really. That’s the premise of that animation. A sweet-bean-bun-headed hero uses his delicious head to feed his friend and fight evildoers, in particular his arch nemesis Baikinman (literally Bacteriaman).

the creator, yanase takashi was drafted and sent to China by the Imperial Army and witnessed the cruelty and absurdity of war. after the war, he wanted to create a hero who is nonviolent and helps suffering kids. he knew how destructive starvation is to the body and soul, so the hero, anpanman, offers himself to feed the hungry.

This reminds me of 'The Gorgeous Insanity of Keith Moon.' It was an instrumental that started out with a rather simple drum solo, but the tempo progressively increased with every verse, until it got to the point where I thought my radio would self destruct. Even though Moon wasn't mic'ed up, he could still be heard screaming wildly as he experienced the brain-strain of trying to keep time toward the end of the track. It was absolute madness. I'm unable to find ANYTHING about it online anymore. I heard it as a kid on the Dr. Demento Radio Show.

That is the main them song to the animated Cartoon series for children, Anpan man! Basically a flying Superhero with the face of an Anpan (a soft round pastry bun with sweet black bean inside). Nyango Star (the name of the mascot) is a very clever triple entendre. It is the mascot of the Aomori prefecture, which has a large production of apples. This, and the Japanese love of cats, inspired it's form as a cross between an apple and a cat. Now for the name. In Japanese, 'Meow' is ‘にゃー’, or 'Nyaa', and 'Apple' is ‘りんご’ (Ringo). These words are combined to form the first part of their name: Nyango, and because they play the drums, 'Star' is added after 'Nyango' as an homage to Beatles drummer Ringo Starr
