AI... the thing I think about AI "artists" is that the artist is not as much a single entity as it is a systemic entity gaming the music construct. I think that AI "artists' along with a system of AI faux "listeners" and AI promotions can easily take over which ever market, ranking, etc, its programmers target.

Hi, I don't often watch your videos (I'm more of a bass person), but I always get to see your posts, and I do enjoy them :) But here I am, I suppose because this one is more about music in general. A billion is an awful lot, that's like 1 in 8 of ALL people alive today listening to a song. That bit about using parents' accounts explains a lot, I've long suspected that my audience is younger than what my analytics implies due to the type of comments I get. Are we out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong. Final thought: AI is a fad, like crypto, but less of a scam. Just a series of new algorithms that will slightly augment the tools we already use.

Rick's is one of my favourite channels here on YT... I don't always agree with what he says though, bt that's one of the reasons I love him. I learn an awful lot of stuff EVERY TIME. 🙂 About this particular video... A few observations. 🙂 "A "listen" is made by 30 seconds". Yep, and 30 secs are a LOOOONG time for many youngsters. I'm 68, so sometimes I think about how "songs" like Atom Heart Mother, or "Echoes", or concept albums like "Tommy" or "Quadrophenia", or other stuff from that era would be taken by young people now. And the answer, so it seems to me, is "Hmm, it would depend on the level of musical education and the ability/willingness to PAY ATTENTION to what happens". Take a song like Pink Floyd's "Time"... Before it gets into the "real action" at least a couple minutes have passed. Most youngsters would have lost interest loooong before. And they would lose a masterpiece, in terms of both music and lyrics 🙄. Kids using their parents' accounts: you bet they do. Those stats are misleading, HEAVILY misleading, I reckon. 🙄 Did you notice that there are NO artists from before the 90s in the stats? THAT kind of music is gone. It required too much attention for too long time. Same for jazz, fusion, that kind of stuff. Also, I have the feeling that so much of current top chart music is kinda "all the same", as if there was a "winning magic formula" and everybody was playing along it. And much is about the lyrics, but not in a way that I could appreciate. I mean, come on, take ANY King Crimson lyrics and compare to ANY current top 10 lyrics. Are you kidding me? 😁 AI: Rick is optimistic. Give AI a few years to perfect, and you'll be surprised by how much it will conquer. And we could even not notice 🙄. There are already literally TONS of photos and videos made by AI, and LOTS of people taking 'em for real... 🤦🏼‍♂ Do you really REALLY think it won't be just the same with music? 😅 Now, what kinda worries me is that as the music gets "easier" the thinking of most people gets "simpler", and that's totally normal. But I'd prefer it to become more complex and people to be able to follow that complexity. 🙄 Very interesting video, and I liked your comments and how many of them actually "anticipated" what Rick would say moments later. 🙂 See you next time!

I believe the listening habits have a large impact. Older listeners usually prefer to listen to whole albums and have favorite artists. Younger listeners seem to listen to individual songs then skip to another artists, with less artist "loyalty". (They love playlists though)
@DavideBaroni
@DavideBaroni Год назад
Do they listen, actually? Or do they just HEAR? 🤔 I have the chance to talk to lots of teenagers, and a couple weeks ago we were talking about music, THEIR music, and I was listening with them and started making them notice this detail, and that other detail, lyrics first and then music, and make them reflect about what they were listening. Some of them couldn't even pay attention for more than a few seconds, they were "passive" listeners, didn't notice the subtleties nor the "message". 🙄 I'm a (now retired) clinical psychologist, and I USED music to make therapy to a number of youngsters. Just redirecting their attention, and broadening their musical horizons. You wouldn't believe how much they changed... All by their own. Paying attention enhanced their perception of the world... Made their world richer, and them more aware. I still remember the first of them, in a few months he went from Sepultura to King Crimson to classical music to experimental to ethnic and so on. I ended the therapy when he arrived at a session enthusiastic for his own discovery of Bela Bartok and Schoenberg... And I met him an year later, at a concert by Shalil Shankar (Indian classical music... And the next week we met again at a Taiko concert 😁). I had difficulties in recognising him, for he had changed so much. He came for depression and became joyful and enthusiastic about Life, through music. All I did has been to ask him to pay attention to certain aspects of the music (he played bass and drums in a Death Metal group), and by that mean I introduced him to humour, and then to complexity, and then to different genres, and then he took off all by himself. There are so many like him... 🤦🏼‍♂ Older listeners liked to sit down and, well... LISTEN. 🙂

Here’s you a way with putting a million, billion & trillion into perspective. A million seconds is about 12 days. A billion seconds is half a lifetime (a bit under 32 years). A trillion seconds is more than all of recorded history (a bit under 32,000 years).

My biggest takeaway from watching Rick's videos over time is that Rock & Metal - like Jazz earlier - has become pretty much irrelevant commercially. This is no reflection on the quality of work being produced! I don't care about charts really, so the only thing that bothers me is (a) it becomes more difficult for people to discover it, and (b) I want artists to earn enough to keep producing interesting music, which is getting harder but still I think doable. Also, as a maths teacher I want to thank you for pausing to talk about billions vs millions!

I think Rick's comment about AI and music is spot-on (no pun intended). But for other areas, it'll have a huge impact. For example, photography. It won't put creative photographers out of business, but it'll totally replace stock imagery and the bulk of corporate usage (quite aside from the ethical viewpoint). Interesting.

I wonder how much (and obviously no way to quantify this at all) people's listening habits to music has changed since digital music and streaming took over from physical media like cassettes or cds. Back in the day, sure pop artists always sold the most, but were people listening to them as much when they got their cd home compared to rap or metal fans? Now that streaming is just there on basically every device, do more people have that on in the background when previously they might not have had any music on at all, or just listened to the radio? Also, how many of these views are like Rick says, because those artists are at the front so they get populated into a lot of people's feeds and suggested songs? Is music promotion these days just about getting your artist on the front page of spotify or apple music? The numbers seem a lot bigger compared to 'back in the day', but that's simply down to every man and his dog now having at least one device capable of streaming music and you don't even need to pay for it any more if you can put up with adverts.

I'm having the same reactions you are: Who? lol But it really is a sad state of affairs for real, musician-generated MUSIC, these days. Was recently watching a drum conversation video with Neil Peart, Doane Perry, and Jim Keltner . Granted the video is about a decade old now, but they talked about the future of the industry and the implications that professional musicians are getting the squeeze and here we are. Drummers managed to weather the advent of drum machines and electronic drums. Will the art of musicianship survive this era of 'autotune' and AI???

AI is definitely showing copyright law is out of date. Even without AI, I heard that someone just used brute force to output all potential 8 bar melodies - and copyright it... So any 8 bar melody that you write, is likely already a copyright violation (if you are aware of the other musical work(?)). So, if AI generates a melody, who owns it? Do you license it from the AI? (I saw one photo AI site that was selling NFTs of the artwork that it generated as the license. So if you are not the owner of the NFT, they theoretically could sue for misuse of the generated photo. But I don't know that the law supports that - yet... although I don't know...) BTW, one of the AI photo sites generated some "album art" that was even better than I was hoping for.

I think the films certainly helperd the fame of Elton John and Queen, but I think its more than that -- Queen and Elton John have really anthemic music. Stuff you can grab a bit and put in a meme, or hum a little bit of and it immediately grabs the attention. Beatles have this to some extent, but nowhere near as much. Their big tracks aren't bombastic anthems to the same extent, so they just aren't quite as iconic and immediately recognisable as Queen and Elton so they don't spread as easily as Elton John and Queen tracks be it radio/youtube/tiktok etc. I say this as a beatles fan before Elton John and Queen.

About the stats, all I can say is that time is a cruel mistress. I still love you, Beatles. Also, the thing about modern music is that it's incredibly superficial and leaves little lasting impact on listeners. Most of the top 40 or 100 pop acts will be in and out of the spotlight in a year or two (as are their hits) , and there is a constant stream of generic 17 year old pop stars being produced to fill the bottomless needs of YT or Insta, or tiktok, etc. So they are all pretty difficult to remember as they are all essentially the same, and relentlessly so. So don't feel bad about not knowing who they are.
