I remember watching this on TV with my two brothers. Don Kirchners Rock concert performance. We were all teenagers and huge Sabbath fans since the first album. First time actually seeing them live. We were in Sabbath heaven, man! Went on to see them in concert many times over the years with Ozzy, then Dio. Still my favorite band to this day. I'm in my 60s now, and I'm actually wearing a Sabbath Vol 4 t-shirt right now.
Coming back to this music so many years later, the two things that strike me are how much taste and groove goes into Bill Ward's drumming, and how crystal clear and accurate Ozzy's voice is. Is it possible that they're actually UNDERrated for their musicality?
This footage is gold! At 6:00 Ozzy is laughing because he got the lyrics wrong. He sang the final verse of the song. "Kiss the world with winter flowers" is the last verse of the song. Even so, everyone adapted and continued the show as if nothing had happened. Legends!
@@mr.brenman2132 Ozzy was notorious for getting the words wrong live, even early in their career, 69/70. everything you'd hear would be a line from the song, just in a pretty much random order
The Sabs were always brilliant live. I was lucky enough to see Sabbath when they reformed and played their hometown of Birmingham in the 90’s. They were stunning live and Tony’s bone crunching riffs just go through you. The crowd became so excited and insane, they ripped all the chairs out of the arena and threw them all over the place! Unforgettable experience.
It's crazy how Black Sabbath is seen as the first heavy metal band, but they had bluesy elements jazzy elements just solid rock and roll elements, you even hear some like Calypso reggae in there, doomie, thrashy, punky, Black Sabbath is like everything, they're all forms of music they don't have a genre
Fantastic, Andrew! This was a real pleasure to watch! As always you got everything right. A couple of other points about this vs. the 1970 version: 1) This one includes some crowd interaction shots; and 2) Geezer is included, whereas in the 1970 Paris version you never see him at all.
How has nobody had this man listen to “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” or “Spiral Architect” yet? The SBS album is my personal favorite of theirs and has so many gems.
@@firegardendevine6039 Technical Ecstasy would have been way more highly praised, if not for the very poor mixing. There are actually alternate studio versions of the songs that you can listen to on youtube, and they sound so much better. Gives you a whole new appreciation for the album.
I would just like to thank Mike Gammon (?) for all these Sabbath requests, a true Black Sabbath fan ! 🤘 It is nice to see something other than the 1970 Paris footage. Great to see the guys smiling too. Geezer getting some coverage with his flaming fingers on the bass. Good stuff.
The odd lyrics from the live 1970 version of, "War Pigs," are the partial, but original lyrics called, "Walpurgis." The lyrics were changed to War Pigs because the record company found the original lyrics too disturbing.
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was a great show for us up and coming musicians and those that just appreciated great music. No pitch correction, Geezer killing the bass, Bill killing the drums, Tony and Ozzy were doing their thing. So good. Got to see them in '78 with Van Halen.
This is my favorite Bill Ward song, there is something about his groove here. I wish you would have explored the beats he brought to this song a bit deeper. Maybe the studio version would give you a clearer listen.
I remember watching this episode of Kirshners Rock Concert. The same episode also had Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. 🤘 Now unfortunately comes the part where I do old man bragging. I saw them in 75, 76, and 78! Kicked Ass! 🤘
I saw Sabbath in ‘74 &’75, it was transcendent. Ozzy wasn’t technically a good singer but I can’t imagine anyone else behind the mic in that era. Tony was just being Tony (which is high praise) Bill slaying the kit and Geezer’s entire right hand slapping the strings.
Luv the clip!!. Bill bringing those sticks back that far...Brilliant❤... Bill tells a story when he was very small, 5 or 6, that Marching bands would pass his house, the streets were narrow in industrial England...so when you got close to the gate..they were only maybe 2 metres away from you. He says he never forgets feeling of the sound impact on his body as the big bass drum was struck, and his earsdrums ripped by the snares and shocked by the cymbal clashes. When he was a bit older, 10-13 I think, his Mum and Dad would do band sing alongs at the local pub, Mum was a good vocalist.... Dad played the piano I think. Sometimes the drummer was too pissed to take his kit home in the car and would leave it in the spare room at the Ward household as it was close by ( knowing that would probably have a play session in the week). I can still see Bill waking up early in the morning, seeing that kit for the first time, his finger touching the resting stick on the snare and a sunray of light hitting that connection...like David's finger touching the finger of God! Lol! So ever since he played drums... he always wanted to emulate the power he felt on that day as a young boy.
If you want to know how powerful Sabbath is, look at how much the camera is shaking at 5:55 and 6:25 from people losing their fucking minds. In the full video of this concert there are about 5 or 6 times you can see people smoking joints right in front of the camera lol.
i grew up on bands that had twin guitars and used to hate the way that things felt scooped out and hollow without the rhythm guitar under the solo but the older i got and the more experienced i got as a bass player the more that space left by the missing rhythm guitar felt like home. hit the landmarks of the changes but just noodle and enjoy having all that space to mess about in!
brilliant the performance was great but even the out fits lol yea the high hat accents brilliant exactly what I was taught not to do use the wrist not the arms lol it was great pic have a great day
Hi Andy, great reaction again , I can see you really do appreciate their talent, this line up produced 8 superb albums 70 -78 , watching war pigs 1970 live Paris, where Bill's drumming was dynamically brilliant , I was wondering how more drum kit as in this live snowblind would have improved on that performance ? Keep up the your great reactions from Steve in the UK 👍
I was there! Don't remember this, but I remember David Bowie s Diamond Dogs, advertisement on TV. Volume 4 is my fav BS album. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath eS my favorite back then. I brought the Album to school to share , My Mom was not pleased! I went to a prorochial school! Was I A Rebel!? This music brings back so many memories! Thank you!!
React to some Ozzy! But please look for the "Live & Loud" concert videos.... if you're still not fully convinced Ozzy is the goat frontman. -mr. Crowley - bark at the moon -flying high again -shot in the dark - no more tears Any of the videos from that concert video.... I'll pay whatever for you to react to some live and loud
You have to listen to the studio version . The drumming of Bill Ward is at his peaks, way more subtle . I feel uncomfortable about the singing of Ozzy who sounds at the verge of the wrong note. I miss the mellotron at the end .
According to the book "How Black Was Our Sabbath" written by the roadies for the band during these years: This was one of the odd eras for the band when there was some animosity in the band due to Ozzy's unreliability and during this time Tony insisted on being center stage and pushing Ozzy off to the side as a petty form of punishment. There's also a great story in the book that involves them accidently dropping one of the bags of fake snowflakes from the lighting rig on top of Ozzy's head as he was trying to catch snowflakes and knocking him out cold on stage.
Ozzy was a master of keeping the audience tuned in, involved and connected. He is not noted for his prowess as entertainer often. He always looks like he is having a good time, but he's no dummy, he know how important it is to look like you are having a blast, true or not.
The butting heads among the band came after 75 . It started around 77 n on when OZZY started to drink n hitting the drugs hard buy 79 he was on his why out of the band. Not to mention that their manager at the time was ripping them off millions funny thing is he would turn out to be Ozzy's future father inlaw a few years later when Ozzy married Sharon and really revised his career n life when she bought his contact off her farther
Ahhh, the not so muted drug reference. I absolutely love the song. Volume 4 has a a whole different feel to it in my opinion. Similar to how Master of Reality is a whole feel thing. Thanks for the review. @Andrew Rooney Drums have you seen the recently released Beat Club YT video of Tony Williams Lifetime song with Jack Bruce (Cream) on Bass and John McGlaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) on guitar?
Please, Please, PLEASE take a listen to the studio version of this song. The drums are so much cleaner and I think you will be in awe of this version. Thank you
the "snow" is physical stuff theyre dropping from the ceiling; you can see it stuck in Ozzy's hair lol 7:15 and also all over the stage in a couple of the wide shots
tell me the album version is slowed down because that drum line is way slowwww-also having seen ozzy live 40 years ago he can sound amazing live-just like the record if u like that kinda voice he can bring it live and he has presence.
I was just like Mike, 17 years old at the time. When I saw in the TV Guide that Sabbath was going to be on Kirschner's Rick Concert I felt my heart stop and couldn't wait for the day to come. My first time ever seeing them live.
Ozzys devilish half wink to the criwd everytime he diesnt say cicaine is one of my favorite oarts of the performance lol. Thst and the tei kids in the front row that were definitely Sabbath fans not invited by whichever people put this show on in yhe states back then lol.
Hello Andrew I tried to become a patriot but it won't allow my card I have a song I would love for you to hear or even a request I've been a sabbath fan my whole life always wished I was a drummer there is a song Bill ward sang the last song on the last album Bill sang and wrote due to the issue between ozzy and the band but he used a subject of war to relate it and what was going on at the time please listen to swinging the chain it will blow your mind on how he sang and drummed and why he didn't do more
Hey Andrew I can't believe you haven't reviewed Iron Man by Sabbath yet, it's got all the great Sabbath greatness, changes of tempo, killer riffs and the most mind bending bridge from descending to assending in one beat, happens after the guitar solo, if you want to see and hear Bill Ward driving the band this is it, IRON MAN!!!!!!
