Carl is so accomplished, a terrific percussionist and drummer. Loved his playing with ELP...a standout British drummer, along with Bonham, Collins and Bruford!

Carl is one of my favourite drummers and a nice guy too. To think he toured with ELP playing a 2.5 tonne kit!!!
@maxwellgordon9868
@maxwellgordon9868 3 года назад
And if I remember correctly Ringo Starr sold that kit to auction.
@halfigliulo1019
@halfigliulo1019 2 года назад
It was a kit he collaborated with British Steel. It was British Steel who initiated it.. Drummers love the sound of Steel but its expensive and heavy. A logistics nightmare. It was a complete half inch Steel drum kit. More to it. A jeweller engraved animal scenes on each drum Another fact. It was one of if not the first drum synthesizers kits. He worked with Bob moog to make several drums synthesizers when triggered. Everyone thought it was Emerson during toccata. It was all palmer. Another problem was 2.5 ton bass was too heavy for most venues. Many needed to be reinforced. Ringo auctioned the kit. A friend of carls i believe named frangioni purchased it last I heard. They're attempting to get it for a museum last I heard

I saw Carl Palmer with Atomic Rooster in a small club in 1969 and his thing then was to take his t-shirt off during his solo. Your "short and sweet" comment made me think of it and how many guitar players have gotten grumpy through drum solos that were either way too long or lacked some other kind of distraction. Hahahaha

I was once told that to become a master of the drum set, you first had to master each component of the drum set, practice until you can get every sound possible on each individual component, then you start putting those sounds together, from sticking/brush techniques on drums, to same on cymbals, scratches, butt strikes etc,

Carl kept up straight classical studies for a very long time, not sure how long. There's a clip of him from a 1973 ELP documentary that shows him playing through "William Tell Overture" on timpani with his very old, very British, very not-rock instructor looking on.

Carl Palmer has to be one of favorite rock drummer's today.Ive seen ELP at least 4 times incredible performance. Carl displays old school drumming techniques. When Johnny Carson asked who he liked in today's music Ala 70's, he said with out hesitation Carl Palmer..he said he was a fan of the group.

Not back in the day. HGe routinely won many top drummer awards, impressive when one stops to consider who were playing in their prime back then. People forget him now thanks to a passionate aversion of progressive rock in general and ELP in particular by the "esteemed rock press." That ELP is not in the RRHoF is a crime...

those who where in Montreal Olympic stadium 1977 witched a master like no other with incredible playing - I have seen many groups with good drummers like Billy Cobham Cosy Powell etc but to me no one can match Carl in the 70s note he is older there Carls Palmer at California Jam and Monteral in 1977 - Carl would play long long peaces like Carnival 9. and Tarkus or Pictures at an Exhibition and then do a long solo - while most just play easy 3-4 min songs and then a drum solo ELP's long songs where like a long solo. so demanding - but yes Play Toccata from ELP's live concert in Monteral just the intro and ending of song are demanding - b Here is the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PrfqVAaR2YQ.html seen Collins and Powell and Cobham and others - to me no match. - just the amount of drumming during an ELP concert where they play 20 to 30 min songs full speed and then this
