it's not the band's problem, it's the self-proclaimed 'fans' is, fans that can't accept the changes are hilarious. felt like they're the ones to prioritize with. lmao. had they thought it's not the band's/Jay's goal to outplay Joey?? i think not, that's what fans think.
I guess I kinda get it. People grew up with Joey as their favorite drummer and then he leaves and here's this guy jay. People can't handle change sometimes
@@alo4912 I've been listening to Slipknot since 2001.. I really like Jay. I think the band knew what they were doing when they chose him. His style is really in line with the direction the band was going.
I’ve never understood any of this sort of thing with metal bands, it’s like KsE with Howard and Jesse, I liked both of them and the same with Jay and Joey! I probably prefer Joey’s style but I’ve never by extension disliked Jay.
ATTENTION EVERYONE!! I apologize for the awkward cuts in this video. I was arrested by the RU-vid police and had to delete those segments to be able to keep this video up. Thank you!!! If you'd like to watch the unedited version I've posted it here www.dailymotion.com/video/x7sloos
Have you seen Hideki Aoyama of BABYMETAL? He's a beast. I couldn't find a video that focuses on him other than drum solos. But here's a good song with the drums. BABYMETAL - AKATSUKI紅月アカツキ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K882HXjmxgQ.html Their drums are very Dragonforce inspired.
A lot of people sometimes give Jay a hard time about timing while not realizing that when he's on top of or behind the beat, its almost always intentional (or at least natural for him) to emphasize certain bits or to give a little separation between his hits and the other percussion to get the bigger sound. You see it a lot in jazz, hitting the ride early to push the song, or rock lagging snare hits to give a bigger feel... or hitting the crash early to emphasize the hit, or lagging it a little to mesh with the other instruments better. As Gandalf said, "A wizard is never late, nor is he early... he arrives precisely when he means to." This isn't prog, it doesn't need to be perfect. Of course exactly how much of it is just his natural feel of it, and how much he consciously controls I don't know, but its important, especially in a 9-person band.
Considering Max took Jay to see Slipknot when he was like 9, he also grew up with Joey's licks while learning their songs, so it was much easier for him to integrate his own style into it when he eventually joined them. Jay really is the fairy tale story of growing up to play with one of your favorite bands.
@@thanoswasright7899 is that later than because I see him pretty good playing the drums in Blood host from 2013 the music video so I believe that's incorrect
@@badplayr4456 if I'm not mistaken (and I may be, I looked this up over 6 months ago) the fact he wasn't constantly playing a repertoire as taxing as Slipknot's probably helped him figure out the best methods to stay healthy enough to drum again without hurting himself too much more in the process
he suffered from transverse myelitis, a neurological disease that cost him the ability to play the drums toward the end of his time with Slipknot that’s why they let him go
Great video as always. Yeah, baby. Weinberg’s the real deal alright. Sooo hard to really HIT and maintain that super high level of technique. His work on the new album is gigantic.
@@JunkdrummerTV I think you should be safe from copyright for the most part as long as the video is "educational". But copyright laws fucking suck in general and in my opinion is antithetical to what we as artists aspire to do with our art. We make music for ourselves as artists, but the beauty is sharing that with people and seeing how they interperate it separate from your intentions as the creator. Art shouldn't be the sole property of labels and big ass corporations. It belongs to everyone including the fans and people should celebrate when their works of art inspire someone to wanna talk about it or add on to it instead of viewing it as theft. That's at least how I've always seen it.
@@Southboundpachyderm Haha. Tell to that any artist I've done on Warner Bros or Sony. They take all my monetization on those videos. Which for a little RU-vidr like me has been a significant amount.
There's a video here on youtube with Max and Jay playing drums together. It's a duet with them playing Sing, Sing I believe. Guitar Center Drum off I think it's called. You can totally see the different styles.
This is the first video I’ve watched of yours. I don’t know if it’s been mentioned before but you should totally check out Matt Greiner of August Burns Red
When I started to listen to Slipknot. Joey was still in the band. But in November of last year I saw Jay perform a few Slipknot songs. And he was amazing. And I was able to meet him after the performance.
Hey Steve, found yr channel about a month ago and have seen a ton of yr video's (love the way you go about every video) great to see a drum teacher and "gigger" that 100% gets it! You're 1 cool dude n yr students are truly lucky to have you! From 1 Drummer to Another 🤘
You have to check out Alex Bent from Trivium. Started playing with them in early 2017. He has his own RU-vid channel where he posted playthroughs of the songs he did off their at that time new album. I would recommend checking out Betrayer, Beyond Oblivion, or Thrown Into the Fire.
I'm sure this has been recommended before; but Mario Duplantier would be another awesome metal pick to check out. Gift of Guilt, The Art of Dying, The Way of All Flesh, and Liquid Fire are probably some of his best work, and damn it's impressive to get some syncopated rhythm with some straight up blast beats and 32nd notes at the tempos they play, for the duration their sets a lot of times go for. He's phenomenal to watch live. Edit: Wrong brother, like an absolute dolt.
I would love for you to take a look at Thomas Lang. His independence and technique is unmatched on the kit. He really is one of my favorite drummers and I found him because of the dream theater auditions he did.
Also thank you for these - love how you break down these drum parts and especially since Faith No More were one of my fav bands as a kid, reminding people of their style is great!
at 8:32 in the video you actually were wrong, jay is self taught at around 14 he first played and learned over a year period. young but not a kid and definitely a lot of advancement on his own accord, great video happy you made it keep metal drum reviews coming. \m/
This video is a great showcase of why I like your channel: I prefer Jay for Slipknot over Joey but I couldn’t explain why. I thought maybe Jay plays with more heart and Joey was more technical. But your breakdown of Jay’s playing helped me understand more of what I was hearing
Awesome reaction man. It's nice to see someone giving Jay his credit. I couldn't really hear it that well in live version But in the music video just after breakdown Jays drumming is freaking crazy. I heard people say he was off beat. I don't Know anything about drumming but my dad is a musician so i was around music all my life and I could tell it was part of a Style and techniques he was bringing to the song. Don't get me wrong Joey is a monster drummer and gave Slipknot that signature sound but When replacing someone like Joey it's either gonna pass or fail! Joey is just that good. fortunately Jay is too. He took the already killer playbook that Joey left and fused his own style. Both are incredibly talented each with their own style. Lol about to watch your reaction to Joey, that'll determine if i sub or not!🤘😝🤘jokes! i already did!
People don't understand that Slipknot didn't just pick any drummer, Jay got in after years of hardwork especially considering he made it to slipknot around only 10 years after he started playing. You can't take credit away from him just because his dad was a famous drummer.
Razor knows his shit, and I appreciate that for sure, -- I'm a musician and have been reviewing concerts and albums for over 20 years. Put It like this -- my first show was Motörhead opening for Dio. Jay adds some really nasty jazzy half measure eigth fill roll type shit going on with blasts. There's quite a bit of blues fill in there which is more evident in Against Me, but he's only yet begun his career on the big stage. Kid is fucking rad and could probably play anything he wants.
Also, an an addendum -- I'm a Slipknot fan. I saw them my first time at Ozzfest in 1999, and bought their album the next day(only to have Roadrunner send it to me a few weeks later with your standard promo pack, but I didn't complain). Dude is a hell of a talent and I look forward to seeing how he evolves, if that's at all possible more than simply refining his craft.
Suggestion for future review: Sting's drummer on the song "Seven days". The original video shows quite a bit of him as it's a studio recording, it's an UNBELIEVABLE drum part, pure perfection start to finish with so many dynamics and the timing is gorgeous.
Yes! Slipknot did use blast beats before, especially in the albums All Hope is Gone and .3 Subliminal Verses. You can hear the greatest Joey's blast beats in the song "Three Nil". Starts with one and it repeats over the entire song. Is phenomenal.
@@JunkdrummerTV I think it would be a good way to get in the ballpark of how to "feel" that rhythm. When done with quarters it ends on one. May just be one of those "tomato" &"tomato" ....just a different way of saying it 👌👌👌 Thanks for the hasty reply! Got a sub from me!
Firs of all thanks for your videos. I like jay.He is great but,I'm diehard fan of joey.He has cool style and great technique and it was fun to watch. Also I like slipknot's drum sound when they were with joey so much more than how it sound with jay.It doesn't feel slipknoty anymore.
I've been listening to slipknot since the early days, and Joey was and is to this day one of my biggest reasons for playing drums. When I first saw he left and jay joined because I didn't see how a punk drummer would be able to play in the style of slipknot, I was really fucking bummed, but after watching him play I immediately changed my mind and fell in love with him. it was clear that joey was struggling really badly with his health issues and the last album with him really showed it. Joey lost a lot of his energy and stamina through all the back shit and it sucks ass that he had to leave in the end because he was the life of slipknot for so fucking long. In my opinion you can't compare Jay to Joey. They're completely different in how they approach drums. Joey is and always will be one of the best drummers to ever play in metal, but Jay has brought back the energy to slipknot in his more modern metalcore/rock (the really powerful rim shots) influences that give him more groove than joey had. Joey's greatest asset was his speed and precision in his fills and blasts, and Jays biggest asset is his groove and experience outside of metal. What I would like to see is both of them playing drums together and seeing what kind of awesomeness comes out of it. Jay earned his spot in slipknot more than almost any of the other members, and thats why I like him so much. He grew up listening to them just like all of us and it shows how much he loved their music in the way he plays with them. He brings so much fucking energy and power to the new album.
Hi Steve. You said something along of the lines of "you can tell he's been playing since he was a kid" but I actually remember him saying he started playing when he was 14 (which is still young I guess). It seems reasonable to think his dad had a hand in correcting some early mistakes like bad posture or sticks holding... Anyway, love the channel and your enthusiasm. Keep on rocking!
Blast Beats were Used Very prominently By Joey during the "Iowa" Album. But Slipknot's use of them never was too much, they were only used as buildup before a Chorus or Verse. Thats what makes Slipknots Drumming a cut above the rest in my eyes. They know exactly when to Go all in, and when to let the vocals or guitar shine in the song. Drums in slipknot are like an insane train going at ridiculous speeds, it could derail at any moment, but it never does. Edit: I love Both Joey and Jay, but people should stop comparing the two, Jay isn't Joey, but Joey isn't Jay.
You definitely need to react to Chris Turner. Hes the drummer for Oceans Ate Alaska and he is BY FAR one of the most interesting, complex, fast, and clean drummers that Ive ever seen.
let's put it this way, i like both jay and joey are amazing drummers in their own right. similar to the argument of "which metallica bassist was the best?" all of em were good and have their own styles.
I just commented on your Chris Adler video suggesting Jason Bittner, and now I've got to suggest you check out Alex Bent of Trivium! Dude's got COLOSSAL chops, and I think you'll dig it.
Two great and inventive drummers worth checking out that are sometimes overlooked are Steve Judd of Karnivool and Dave Turncrantz of Russian Circles. They do some cool stuff.
I believe that Jay joined Slipknot in 2014/2015 to record .5 The Gray Chapter-He, along with Alessandro Venturella joining as Bassist in place of the deceased Paul Gray haven't been attributed numbers. Slipknot no longer incorporate numbers on their uniforms and it really adheres to the evolution of their identity. They now also have Tortilla Man in place of the departed Chris Fehn.
I don’t know nothing about drumming and love slipknot. But I have no idea why I am watching this a 2am and don’t know any of the words your saying. Regardless I will give you a like. 👍🏼
Ok. This might be my favorite JDTV episode yet. JJ episode was great too but this one was really really fun to watch. (Do Gee Anzalone Through the Fire and the flames and tell us why he got the job with DragonForce)
I don't know how much videos there are of just the drummer (there's studio videos, but it contains the guitar and bass as-well) from Cattle Decapitation but I think you should look at him too. Highly underrated band imo
There was always something about Jay that I liked better than Joey, and I finally realize. It’s the fact that he does those jazzy things you pointed out more so than Joey’s stuff
That quick question asking about if they had utilized blast beats so obviously before: a great example is older, but The Devil in I has a couple of great blast sections towards the middle/end
No, Joey got kicked out of the band because they tought he was doing drugs, but that was not the case at all. I'm not going to tell the whole story just go look up youtube videos.
