ATTENTION KIND VIEWERS!!! So I don't have to keep addressing this, you're right, I didn't recognize snippets of songs from records I listened to, but I haven't listened to them in over 20 years and the memory is quite hazy, if ya know what I mean. Also. Do people still listen to Metallica? Hahaha.

Best Lars burn came from James when they were recording Load. A light bulb burnt out in his studio, so Lars grabbed one, changed it and asked the camera, “How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?”. James says, “We’ll find out when one gets here”.

Every drummer messes up at some point, it's just part of being human!!! There's a million drummers out there that are technically better than Lars. But what makes Lars better than them is, is that he has a style!!! Do you ever stop to think how hard it is to have a style on a percussive instrument?!?! It must be a 1000x harder than a stringed instrument!!! How many drummers do you hear that you instantly know "oh, that's so and so." NOT MANY BY PLAYING ALONE. 1.KEITH MOON 2.BONHAM 3.PEART 4.ULRICH...LIKE EM OR NOT, HE 5.PLAYS A CERTAIN WAY THAT U 6.KNOW IT'S HIM! PEART 7.JERRY GASKIL- LOVE LOVE LOVE HIS TRIBAL FILLS!!!! SUCH A DEPARTURE FROM STANDARD ROLLING DRUM FILLS!!! 8.CHARLIE WATTS-OH YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT, CHARLIE WATTS!!! 9.I'M SURE THERE'S A FEW JAZZ DRUMMERS, BIG BAND AND OTHER SCHOOLS ALSO!!! In this rarefied top of the list, belongs Lars Ulrich. I, personally don't care for his drumming. But it's unique, sounds like no one else, and fits as tight as the pyramid seams at Giza, to Hetfelds riffs/rhythms. Just as Eddie's and his brothers. (Well maybe not that tight or unique, but very close!) I don't think that's an overstatement, but if others do, remember, it's all art, all opinions, and it's only rock and roll. That's why we like like it!!

As a fellow drummer, I 100% agree with you! Metallica had been my all time favorite metal band until about 10-15 years ago. I even kept considering them my favorite through the Napster debacle and the weird/stinky albums (I'm talking to you, Lulu primarily). Since then Pantera has slowly and surely become my all time favorite metal band. I've always loved them, but they didn't deviate from that heavy, crunchy, deep, metallic sound that made me fall in love with them as soon as I first heard Cowboys from Hell. I still love Metallica and will defend them long term, but I wish Lars would invest some time in honing his craft. I heard them in Austin at Austin City Limits a couple years ago and Lars didn't even try to properly play a few of the old greats (like the awesome double bass sixtuplet portions on "One"...it was physically painful to listen to). I love Lars, but come on. Thanks for the fun video, and for breaking it down for us. Keep up the great work, brother! :)

Something I've learned about Lars that I feel is really telling is that he never sought out help because whatever he did was good enough. Literally, every drummer of the Big 4 (Megadeth is complicated in this) has had some kind of guidance from better drummers or were trained. Lars went so long without practice or guidance from anyone else while they were gigantic, he just never recovered. My thing at this point is when I saw them live in 2017, i was ready for all of this. I was ready for him to absolutely suck. I have a degree in percussion. This had to be the norm. Nope. He played 98% of everything correctly. I respect the fuck out of Lars, frankly.

We all know the story. A kid has ok skills and then ends up using a lot of drugs which helps him with confidence and ability. When the drugs become an issue, the musician finds they cannot play as well as they used to when high as a kite. I believe this applies to many bands as live playing always reveal and definitely applies to Metallica.

Lars isn’t bad because of drugs, he’s actually the one who has the least history of substance abuse. The main problem is that he just stopped practicing and trying at all to improve after 89. He’s even admitted to it, claiming that a bulk of his focus was on the business side of the band, which I absolutely believe.

@@ethangilworth7891 Yes and being a drummer that decision was very short sighted. Coke and drums work when you're 23. After 10 years of abuse your body won't allow itself to be in top physical condition. This happens even when we don't abuse ourselves. Lars needs an entire year with a Thomas Lang level drummer to reveal what his true talent is if he's actually just being lazy. Or maybe he should have become a tennis player instead.

I've been to plenty of Metallishows through the (post-cliff) years in various countries in Europe, & I tell you for a fact that *all* of those shows had at least one facepalm moment from Lars. The fella simply cannot keep time. My favourite moments are when James senses he's losing it, & stands square in front of him to use exaggerated right arm motion to give Lars a beat! My working hypothesis (since no sane individual would take on & keep a drummer who can't keep time) is that between tennis matches as a teenager, Lars was actually training in various mind kontrol techniques, & when he spotted Hetfield's riff-writing prowess he hypnotised him into taking on Lars as best friend & confidant. #GrimaWormtongueUlrich :)

I toured over 30 years, 8 months every year except 2 years. I've seen a lot of fantastic drummers in my travels, and I think of Lars as an expert at what he does for Metallica, but I've always thought that he was overrated as an independent drummer. Perfect member for this band for sure. He's absolutely right about Napster. What few big record company contracts that were to be had in the genre, were killed by the internet, and subscription services that made millions off the backs of aspiring and established bands alike. Bands now rely more on merch, DVD and part of the ticket sales. And hiring out as individuals to sing or play on tracks for other writers and musicians That's why you see 4 or 5 bands playing a short set at concerts - there are no stand-alone main acts with one opener any more. The audience only knows a few songs by each band, and the attention span of today's ticket buyers is too short to sit through a full main act's show . The real money is being a studio musician and touring with bands like Taylor Swift or a big act that has no real band. Just hired guns. The same 16 musicians are recording on almost everything that gets released by major labels With few exceptions and progressive music. A ton of artists at the top of their game are standing in the background playing music that they don't want to for a singer they aren't into, and eek out a living doing what they are passionate about. Fitting into a music industry that has put most serious musicians out to pasture

hmm i agree to some degree, however the upside of the internet is that people can also get famous or at least successful in a niche that never could have in the past. Just what you can create in a home studio nowadays would blow away any studio from 30 years ago. While i do also miss the old days for various reasons including musicianship skill, i must also say that musicianship has become easier in some ways but also more difficult in other ways. it has shifted. The short attention span of people in general is very very bothersome though. I for my part always liked novelty and complexity in music, it's one of the main things that attracts me to music. But i suspect "we" always were a minority, it becomes just more clear now lol.
