My Dad grew up in the 40s, started playing Trombone as a kid in the late 1930s played all through high school got in to the Naval Academy Band, ended up playing with some hellacious studio musicians through the 40s and 50s. He told me about some amazing drummers he played Jazz and Big band with. Several years outside of the navy after the Korean war he stopped for law school. However he did continue arranging music on the side as a hobby and he did play Trombone from time to time to keep his chops up. He passed away in 2013, but I still have his Trombone that at one point belonged to Tommy Dorsey. ( I know this story does not deal with drums much but just wanted to tell it since Listening to this kind of music always reminds me of him)

Different styles require different skills. I played in many punk bands and occasional metal bands but I studied jazz for 4 years with a teacher just for fun and it really opens up your playing. He introduced me to drummers like Elvin Jones, John Coltrane, Steve Smith, Steps Ahead, Phil Collins, Brand X, Tony Williams, Miles Davis etc It was an education. I learned crossovers from Bonham who got them from the jazz greats like Papa Jo etc.

I started playing music (piano) at 6 yo. By 9 I'd branched out to Sax and My all time favorite drums. My first 5 or so years were all Jazz/Swing rudiments and stick control. I am always amazed on how such a young artist has gained decades of technique and skill. As for how do you remember the songs, it's like any other. You don't think, you allow it to come out of you. Just get out of your own damn way. That's a quality not many are lucky enough to acquire. For years I had my old Slingerland Jazz set set up with the drums angled, tuned and layed out for when I'd play that style and my other set was Armed and set for the metal that was more common to get other people to come jam to. Great to see someone like Greyson bring this out to a whole new generation, that unlike you and I, never got to watch the greats like Buddy Rich play a chair on the tonight show and wonder how he got so many sounds out of the thing. Thanks to both Greyson and you for sharing this and all your content.

Watch him play Bleed, he nails it in a full suit. Not sure if its on the tube, may have to scroll down on his Instagram to find it. So jealous of this 19 year old.

He channels the classic big band energy and foundation but you can clearly hear he has more dynamic range and modern sensibilities. I think that's why it's so exciting to listen to him play in 2022 despite big band drumming not being pop kusic anymore ♡

The really cool thing about that upside-down ride ping is that he’s not just doing it for flair - he’s getting different tones from the underside. Nothing’s just to look cool, everything’s there for a musical reason. I daren’t imagine how many hours of rudiments he puts in. As for how he memorises it… are we sure he does?
@subbot8077

I'm 90% sure most of it's improvised, he might have memorized the stabs with the horns or something like that but beyond that I think it's all improvised :)

My thoughts exactly. For me as an old jazz drummer it feels like a really good drummer improvising really well to a tune he knows inside and out.

I LOVE his drummer faces, not gonna lie. Shows how much he is invested, he even plays with his face. 10/10 performance.

Normally I don't like reaction vids but the sheer enjoyment from Samus as a pro is just wholesome. And the drumming I'm not worthy to comment about.

"Sneaky, sneaky..." more than you know - he was playing the whole next passage with the stick butt until he goes back to traditional again 🙌 I agree about the Buddy Rich vibes, even down to the facial expressions!

Has no one noticed that he turned his stick around in his left hand? He's playing with a huge meaty club! Around 9 mins in you can see that he turned his stick around and then at 9:47 he turns it back around the correct way. Absolutely amazing!

This kid plays like someone who was never told "no, that's not possible" when it comes to the drums. And if he was told that, he answered "challenge accepted"

A lot of it is improvised. Basic chord changes.. certain notes the band hits u boost the band set em up. This guy is another level

Out of this world expressive and artistically shining. Of all the drummers I've played with, Jazz drummers have been the best. The most in the pocket, complimentary and part of the ensemble as a equal. They actually know, accentuate, and listen to the phrasing and breaths of what's being played. Less is sometimes so much more. Playing fast or active without having to be louder. They are looking at the same music/chord changes and melody that the rest of the players are. The American Art form shines so brightly on the rhythm section. Jazz drummer is so failing as a name or reference to what so many of them do and are capable of contributing. They are equals as musicians when compared to anyone else in the ensemble. This young man's playing is so on point. He's LISTENING for how and what to add that best suits the direction of the composition. Well done. Thankyou for sharing his playing and thankyou for this content.

I remember about 10 years ago I was in guitar center bullshitting with the drum tech... all of a sudden we heard some of the most epic drumming we had ever heard so we went to investigate. Turns out it was a 7 year old kid just slaying the set with ease. The drum tech looks at me and sighs then said he had been playing drums for 45 years and had taken a wide range of classes and music theory and that this little kid just made him feel like he was total shit at drumming. I laughed and said well I got 12 years under my belt and this kid just dunked on me so hard with zero effort... I paid for my sticks and new cymbal then proceeded to be crushed with the kids mom said he already had a guitar and he wasn't getting a drum set... this kid didn't even have lessons, no set, no practice pads and just slaaaaaayed that set so hard... some people just got it yah know, others strive to learn it but never quite got it the same...

One of my favorite versions of that song is from Money Jungle. It's just Ellington on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums.
