Okay... On the edit I realise I had pre loaded too hard on the caffeine. Apologies in advance for lot's of excited interjections & ideas. SKIP to 3 mins 18 to avoid my intro :)
Sir I've only seen you drink black coffee....no calories there🤔 I believe you are being brainwashed by evil forces in the universe LOL Who doesn't want a cup of coffee? New mugs coming soon?🤪🤪🤪
I opened a local church show for a band that Travis was in. I didn't get to see him play because I had to rush off to my homecoming dance after playing but I remember another drummer talking about how he was playing rudiments with his hands and feet and I was like... that seems difficult lol. I switched to playing with a similar kit layout to Travis 5ish years ago because I wanted to see how difficult fills would be with no tom between my snare and floor tom. I'm almost afraid to go back to traditional rack tom layout at this point. Love the way this layout balances the kit aesthetically.
Fun facts.. Travis Orbin was Alex Rudinger's teacher for a while. That's why Alex's kit is very symmetrical, and also have similar styles! Travis also plays with marching sticks which is crazy! Alex, Travis, Anup Sastry are all MD legends in this style! Love the videos man!
Travis was the original drummer of Periphery, he also played with Sky Eats Airplane and now is the full time drummer for Darkest Hour but he also does a lot of session work. My band actually hired him to do a couple songs in which he used a more traditional setup with the rack Tom mounted above the bass drum in front of the snare. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xTBfp2fqEBk.html this is the link to one of the videos he posted of that and he does do a lot of left foot lead on the kick he told me it’s because he just like to keep the small muscle memory so he switches between which foot he uses. Also when he came into the studio for us we asked him if he practiced the songs and he said no lol then he busted out his sheet music and just reads and plays to a click track with no guitar or any other backing track. The edits you see in his videos are where he would punch in if he didn’t like a run he did or felt something was a little off tempo. The guy is an absolute animal on the drums though. He does a crazy fill in the video link I posted which is a linear tempo change. Love the videos, keep them coming!
This is a really old video of his. He's grown talent wise and size wise haha, literally the dude is jacked now haha. . He's also endorsed by Zildjian now. He's a session drummer, and has a lot to do with how Alex Rudinger plays the drums with open handed independce. If you notice when he switches his snare hand, he will switch his base drum foot. Not always, but most of the time. Its a lot to do with how he programmed his independce/ambidextrous abilities. Great drummer. Love the reaction. :-)
Was just thinking last night I had to go back to check if you had done a Travis Orbin vid. Awesome timing for me. Love his playing and his music in general. He’s a true artist.
Orbin is a beast, I saw him play things that were beyond human once. He was playing metric modulated polyrhythms to a click, going off and on it and it was insane.
Need to watch him recording Pete Peterson’s song Bugz. It’s fuckin nuts. In case no ones mentioned it, the reason he’s reading is because he’s a studio drummer that does a ton of drum parts for various artists.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums "Impact" from the Cancri 55 session. Lots of cool stuff to ooh and ah about in that track, without the song itself sounding too masturbatory. I love Travis because he knows when to hang back and let the song breathe.
Fun fact that a lot of people might not realize. Alex Rudinger was actually a student of Travis Orbin's pretty early on when he was offering classes. You can see some of the similar setups like the tom being on the left for symmetry and the sheet music. The older videos of Alex Rudinger you can see the double high hat setup too if I remember correctly. I have been a big fan of them both forever. Also I play on TRX
Lol I knew you probably had a Travis Orbin reaction in your playlist, I didn't know it was going to be the exact song I was looking for and uploaded this recently.

Hopefully you noticed how much left foot lead he plays in this. I get the open handed playing but the left foot lead is way out of my skill set. He does it flawlessly.
agreed, I'm in the Tomas Haake camp of "always leading with right foot" for djenty double bass patterns regardless if the first note is on an upbeat or offbeat.
@ Richard Swift - was just going to point this out. A great example is at 9:59. I've asked Travis if he's ambidextrous and he claims he is right handed but switches hands and feet all the time, probably just for the challenge. He is an absolute beast and I always enjoy his playing. And yes, his tones are amazing.
Man, he was the original "Periphery" [The band Periphery, now its Matt Halpern] drummer. America, man. That's where we from (; hes a studio guy now, but this is way old news.
Theres like this little pocket in the US in a state: Maryland that has this kind of big progressive bubble. Travis. Anup sastry , animals as leaders which is a band youve reacted too and a band called periphery that sort of started it all. They sort of evolved this prog metal sound over the years and most of the recordings were using midi/programmed drums. They base the programmed drums off of Travis style and then they'll print the midi map or the music and he can read and play it to snag a live recording. All these guys are friends and you can find Travis doing videos of running through all the periphery stuff. Periphery now has a drummer named Matt halpern whom if you listen to he sounds like Travis ' heavy hitting little brother. Its all part of one sound and one scene that's actually very small. Very cool.
Yes yes yes! And like you said Travis Orbin was in Periphery before Matt Halpern. Alex Rudinger was also previous in Animals as Leaders before Matt Gartska
@@Jd0t-plays That's also such a strong contender. I just love the Lune playthrough as you can tell how much emotion Matt throws into his playing for that song.
Recommended Orbin a while ago, so very happy to see this! You’ve GOT to checkout his own EP’s! I can’t even put into words how crazy the writing/execution is! He’s the definition of a human drum machine!
@AndrewRooneyDrums the fact you didn't notice that Travis was switching between left and right foot on the kick drunk surprises me. Travis is also btw the former drummer of periphery before Mr. Matt Halpern.
Hate to take anything away from this guy but he didn't play this through in one take as some people have speculated how amazing it was to do so. There is cutting and pasting going on in that session. for example go to 8:15 of this video and look at the towel on the floor behind the stool. Magically moves and is in a different position by 8:20. I remember watching this year's ago. There are a couple of instances of cutting and pasting in this video if I remember correctly. Again, Hate to burst anyone's bubble. the guy is amazing, but is still human.
8:52 I've been drumming/ performing for ~26 years and I first tried out the Remo CS Reverse Dot roughly 2 years into my drumming career. I have to say, I've used that head since then 99.9999998% of the time. When I don't, it's almost an immediate regret, lol. Its tired-and-true and never lets me down! Also quick note: I believe Travis chokes up so high because he uses the Vic Firth drum corp Magnum sticks. Lol, I have no idea how he does it!
The dude's amazing so prcice and love how punchy he is. He also plays for a band named Darkest hour. he's totally left foot dominant also. He's got the most unusual set up I've ever seen. Bit it's insanely proficient.
That drum to the left of his snare is his rack tom 😂😂😂 very unusual, i know! I actually tried playing with my tom in the same spot and its as fun as it is weird. Not for me, but i had to give it a try. Fun fact: Travis is ambidextrous!
Thank you so much for honoring my request! loved the reaction. You where not as baffled as i was first time i saw it though haha. Little side info Travis Orbin is mainly a session drummer thus this is not his own song but a session., he does have a band, its called darkest hour. pretty neat shit too!! As for the transcribing part. Yes it is a one on one transcription, de guy wrote it all out... all of it. if i'm not mistaken there is a link to the charts in the video description. Thanks again for doing this reaction man i greatly enjoyed watching it. PS: As for my name... just Thom will do :P
@@AndrewRooneyDrums My pleasure !!! glad you enjoyed it he truly deserves to be more known and you just contributed to that! Be Warned though there migth be more Travis reaction request comming from me :P:P
Being high up on the sticks tells me this dude was in marching band. Holding your sticks at the node leads to much better rebound for diddles and buzz rolls.
Would be interested to know how many open hand drummers started that way because they were left handed drummers playing right hand set ups as opposed to those who chose to play that way as a more efficient/effective drumming technique
Great question Phil. Most students sit down and play open handed automatically. Then they see me playing crossed over and copy... I'm not dogmatic on it. Very interesting though
The connection between Travis and Alex has already been mentioned but just wanted to note that he is also recording in the same studio as Alex in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oM53cobIuy0.html (Love the Skill in the video)
I wish Travis would stick a room mic behind a gobo or something too. I know he PUMPS out a shit ton of sessions a month, but I think guys like Rudinger etc get more hits because they have a more "processed" kit sound.
Tried to tell you about this guy before. He's inspired a whole death of modern djent (he was the first periphery drummer and pretty much every niche djent band at the time) drummers with his setup like anup sastry and also alex rudinger who was his student. Honestly check out Bugz by Pete Peterson drummed by this guy and read the Pete's info page on it. It is straight up ludicrous
Fun fact: Alex Rudinger was a student of Travis Orbin. Also, he works as a session drummer and he is reading his composition of this song. Also, his rack tom is on his left! Lol
The edit that you brought out in the video was because he went for different cymbals on that particular part of the song you can see the cymbals were changed out on the floor.
He's channeling Bobby Jarzombek and Matt Garstka a bit. Dude has chops for miles! Love it! I totally get what you say about the drum head logo needing to be perfectly lined up with the drum badge. I'm guilty too!
his video of the periphery/ bulb song "unleash the pwnies" is unreal, because that song was made without a real drummer in mind and wasn't intended to actually be played live, yet he does it anyway.
I haven't watched an orbinator vid in years!!! loved sky eats airplane in high school! would love to see a reaction to alex grind - lightspeed, or any of his videos for that matter! love the channel!!
Lolol I had to re set my snare head because mine wasn't perfect 😂 also quick question my 14 inch Tom is ringing is that because I have it tuned to high? Or to low?
Fun fact: The full drum transcription can be found in the description of the Travis Orbin video: travisorbin.com/images/Cartoon_Theory_-_Wizardry_Mind.JPG I did not double-check if he hits everything according to the transcription.
I’m almost positive that an Emporer X on his snare...basically a CS on steroids. You really need to check out El Estepario Siberiano. He’s known mostly for his “fake” double bass routine, but if I could request one, I’d say some of his best chops he made up for the song Gangnam Style.
Im pretty sure hes left handed.. other then no toms its how my kit would be set up try to play left handed with a standard double kick. your body gets twisted so playing open hand is much better for lefties
Check out his Periphery playthroughs, it's interesting how much his style differs from Matt Halpern - and also they are a lot more crazy than this song (hard to imagine, but early Periphery was pretty erratic)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Yes I am aware, I'm a big fan ;) My point was that Travis did a lot of early Periphery and there are videos of him doing Periphery playthrough and videos of Matt Halpern playing the same songs which is interesting!
*yeah you love that shit get wrecked noob* the feelingtravis orbin leaves you with.. like when you’ve beaten a game, know all of its secrets, have beaten the boss countless times. and then you join multiplayer online, and get absolutely obliterated by a god like player that has 60 kills and no deaths with a pistol
Many drummers have done sessions in there including Alex Rudinger and obviously Travis. The studio is owned by Anup Sastry who's good friends with both of them :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums never apologize for your accent, we are all products of where we’re from. I’m from East Tennessee and with my southern/country accent I’m unintelligible to many people in my own country 😁
open handed. the kit is completely ambidextrous. note the 2 hats, tho' i'm not sure if the right hat isn't an x-hat. note how he leads with his left foot when playing double pedal.
How about some more modern progressive metal stuff? A little bit of badumm and a little Bit of babadabumm? So maybe Jay Postones of Tesseract: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8-Ehht4f9PM.html
dude, if you're trying to drop weight then you can do it easily with intermittent fasting or going low carb. no glasses of hideous green splats required. as well as being a bassists i also do a little health coaching on the side...
@@AndrewRooneyDrums im sorry I was being a little sarcastic and jumped the gun on the comment before realizing you said something. Love your videos by the way!
