To be clearm I'm not dissing the guy, obviously the faster you go, the less force you can apply. I'm just saying that in this vid everything is displayed but strong kicks

Holy shit. That push-pull blast technique. The double strokes on the double bass allows him to play those very fast bursts of three 32nd notes. And holy shit, the 5 stroke rolls at the start mirrored in speed by his feet.... Wild.

My old band opened for Despised Icon about 13 years ago in quite a small venue, getting to watch this dude go to work in such close quarters is pretty spectacular, the guy is an absolute machine behind the kit and also a genuinely very nice dude

@@canfts real talk, I saw them again at a MUCH bigger show on one of those major package tours with like 10 bands about a year later, Alex Erian (vocalist) was walking in the crowd after their set and he came up to me like "hey dude what's up, how's the band? You guys were dope when we played together last year bro!" I was absolutely bowled over by the fact that he recognised me, remembered that gig and gave enough of a shit to actually come and say hi. Bearing in mind when we played with them the venue was a tiny 300 capacity basement club whereas this big package tour was a sold out date at a major venue, about 3000 capacity, literally 10x bigger and yet he still made time to come and talk to me because he recognised me from 1 show we played together in a small club about 18 months prior 🤯

The pedals are Czarcie Kopyto pedals, but Alex puts blocks under the heels as he likes to sit INCREDIBLY high and it helps him get a pivot point for his double strokes (almost like using the rim of the drum for a gravity/freehand blast)

I have got the same pedals (standard) and I like to have my snare and the toms as low as possible. I build my own hardware, but raising the pedals would have been cheaper, I guess...

Andrew, this guys personal YT channel is alexgrind, and he has a lot of live footage from his bands shows on there. I am so glad you finally have seen this guy. One of my personal favorite hyper aggressive drummers out there. Been digging this band for almost 20 years!

Guys been killing it for 20 years now with the band...one of the few guys who can grind, half time some slow stuff, blast at 260+BPM, plus gravity blast, plus accent and fill amazingly. Plus supports the guitars perfectly tbh. Love Alex and hes so overlooked tbh

The pedals are Czarcie Kopyto. Polish company who have become a new forerunner in metal drumming pedals. He's got custom heel plate risers to facilitate heel-toe with his seating position.

Nope, he has only ever played drums, never guitar. Alex Erian "the other alex" did switch from drums to later vocals but neither of them played guitar as they both were in bands that already had multiple guitarists.

In this play through what we're witnessing is evolution. It started with the godfather of tech Neil Peart and has evolved to Alex Grinds the current humble raining champ. Bar none Alex has proven himself time and time again. What's amazing is through his own humility he doesn't even recognize himself as such; he's to humble for that. He does what he does, because he loves it, nothing more. Who better to hold the crown 👑 Also I know it's hard for certain people to understand, but he does what he does all natural. HE'S NEVER USED TRIGGERS. In 2010 I had a conversation with him about his pedals. He said he figured out a way to go faster with less strain. There for the reason as to why he sits higher and why he took the time to modify/design his own pedals. Through his own personal growth he wanted to figure this out. In a word; passion.

I seen this guy play back in 08. Met him and helped him carry his rig off stage after their set. Dude is like 5 foot of pure muscle. Hes one of my most fave extreme drummers. Crazy fast.

Yep, those pedals are modified to have a platform for his feet to be raised so he can play better and confortable. It´s something you have to try to find that "sweet point" when you are learning your doubles and more to find your perfect settings for heel-toe. Mine for example, the footplates are really close to the ground. I believe Alex has some short legs so its the best option for him. Still the guy plays weird but his push pull hand technique is wonderful

Drumtec is a brand of e-drums and related gear. From the looks of it he's running a full accousic to electric conversion on the kicks. Mesh heads with patches that are triggered.

Risers on the pedals make it a shorter stroke to the head... and the pads on the bass heads are click pads to add punch/click to the bass drum

@@markytear Alex Grind is actually a pretty short dude. I'm 6'4" and when I had met him I would guess hes 5'6"/5'7". If you look at previous videos you can tell hes sitting very high in comparisson to using regular size bass drums (22"). Hes got those to help with his sitting angle since he has to sit higher than the bassdrum to sit above the drums the way he does.

No one believed this newbie kid until he posted videos from Deuterium's demo sessions and gigs. I don't know for sure, but after looking at the slide at the front of the footboard, I think those pedals were made specifically to platform up. As far as why, if I had to make a guess, it makes the angle required to get a full kick sound much less steep, making it easy to kick and let his triggers pick them up, as triggers will only really require a slight vibration to trigger the programmed sound. Trigger on the left kick at 11 o'clock and on the right kick at 1 o'clock of the kicks, making their appearance at 0:57

Drumming = learn to play to the best of your ability with both hands/feet. Now learn to play the exact sequences with a single hand/foot. Now combine two independent sequences of the same difficulty you once played with both hands/feet into one. Devote every second to practice.

I LOVE DESPISED ICON, id still really enjoy them if Mr.Pelletier didn't do drums for them, vocals and instrumentals are dope, but man the drummer is like a nice carpet in a nice room, really helps tie the room together. Mr.Grind is that carpet. And all The Dudes abide.

It look like alex is using high heel support since, imo, he’s more comfortable playing higher on his seat with his legs more under him (closer to the bass drum) then usual drummers. so having a higher heel support with a higher seat, with the legs more “under the seat” facilitate his job without adding injuries due to compressed/obtuse foot-leg angle… i dont know… im just speculating 🤔

Yooo Andrew love your videos! You really need to check out Ben Koller he drums in a band calked converge. Think jazz mixed with metal and hardcore punk. Koller was actually a jazz drummer before he joined the band. I would honestly put him up there with the big names. Give them a listen I’m sure he has a few play throughs on RU-vid
