Intelligent, beautiful, sexy, strong, sensitive, devastatingly honest, talented on so many levels and with a multi-octave voice to die for. Who wouldn't fall in love with Joni.
I think it was Joni who said when she'd been compared to Bob Dylan, that the difference was that in his lyrics, he says "you" and in hers, she says "I".
Their relationship was kind of a love/hate thing. She was a bit annoyed about the line 'Do not dress in these rags for me, I know you are not poor' in Avalanche, and Cohen didn't like that she used his line (love is touching souls) before he could use it himself in a song. She then accused Cohen that he had stolen the line 'Our steps will always rhyme' from That's No Way To Say Goodbye from a book by Camus. Joni feels a bit frustrated that Cohen and Dylan are ranked more highly as songwriters. And rightly so, she is right up there with them.
Lee, I just love your vulnerability! Thanks so much for being you. Just keep doing what you are doing and all will be well. Trust me! On the album version she sings in a higher register and James Taylor joins her just with his guitar. Just in case you want to experience, as well.
You should def check out original recording or a live vid from early 70’s of this song (Live at BBC is good). Her voice had deteriorated greatly from her earliest days by this time (‘83). Her lyrics are classic for all time. She is a gift. Enjoy her.
I'll definitely check out an older version of this. Her voice is so damn pretty too. Combined with those lyrics of pure poetry, it's a killer combo. And that's not even counting her musicianship 🙄😆
@@L33Reacts “California” from live at bbc she plays dulcimer like in this vid and her voice/lyrics are breathtaking. Keep going. Your reaction vids are well chosen and your analysis reads genuine. Thanks.
She does as you say “put herself out there” even though she's afraid. Like all true artists, her bravery and her artistry inspire the listener to also be brave enough to be True to themselves. Like she says, ” Love is touching souls,” and listening to Joni is experiencing that love because she reaches out from her soul to our souls. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and for showing so much respect to one of the great Artists of our time.
Several of her albums are true masterpieces. You are right on target with how personal her songs are. I don't know how she does it, but she gives herself away in lyrics and songs. It's amazing. You may want to have the lyrics handy for Joni songs, since she is a true poet whose lines work just from the page.
Cactus Tree, Hejira, The Last Time I Saw Richard, Refuge of the Roads, In France They Kiss on Main Street, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat... and on and on. A rich seam to mine!
This album is the one with her own self portrait painting. A true artist in every way. She always tells a story. Poetry. Life lived well. Today’s music isn’t really music. There’s no instrument. No lyric. No soul. Don’t overthink life. Give it all you can and take only what you need. Your mind is a powerful tool…your instrument.
Thank you Kristine. I really appreciate you 🙏 definitely needed to hear that this morning. She seems to be an artist in the truest sense of the word 🎶❤️
You understand Joni so well because she really puts herself on the line. When she did the Blue album, male musicians were troubled. They were saying: ''Joni, why do you need to be so honest and expose yourself?''
i am a 67 year old Gentleman & i am Fortunate to have been a Big Fan of Joni's Music since the 70s, All Her Music is so Diverse plus She's covered so many different Genres She'a one a of a Kind never to be Compared to Artist. of Truth ..... God Bless you Sir for the Upload & for you & your Family's Future.. Peace
Hot damn, Lee, I am so jealous of you for discovering in such a short time the sheer wonder of what we oldies had to wait agonisingly for months for the next record to come out. You’re binge-listening to the best music that will ever be made and it must be awesome. It certainly comforts this old man hearing it all over again. Your reactions are so real and give me a little bit of the thrill of those glorious years.
Wow bro thank you so much. I know... it's kinda crazy how many rabbit holes I've gone down in just the past 6 months, let alone the entire channels history. I have had my musical world upended in the best way possible. I'm glad to have folks such as yourself here among with us for the journey. Thank you for watching 🙏😁
Joni has 'been there' and it shows through her music and how deeply she feels. Joni, Phil (Collins), and James (Taylor) are in a class by themselves. They all seem to bring themselves into your head AND into your heart.
As a Joni lover for so long, I am stoked by your grasp of her genius,, Everytime you made a comment on her, I cried! She is the best of my generation. So glad you get it!
I need to add another comment because I'm listening to you talk about your child & the struggles.... I was a single mom of three in three years.., and I was poor financially and it was a struggle but if I may give you some advice from someone who's been there? that little child of yours is the most important thing in the entire world. and even if no one else sees the integrity that you show and the hard work that you put in, that child will always feel it and see it. and it will all be worth it in the end. 🌈
Hi and thanks for this. Really enjoying your reaction videos, and am really pleased to see you taking time to react to some female performers such the legendary Joni Mitchell. Now, since you are a drummer and enjoy some classic rock and creative rock I think you would get a kick out of reacting to 'Rocket's Tail' from the 1989 Kate Bush album 'The Sensual World.' That son has the added bonus of having Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd giving some searing guitar work and also includes some superb drum from Stuart Elliott who was the original drummer with 'Cockney Rebel' and also worked with Paul McCartney and Roger Daltrey, and The Alan Parsons Project. Thanks again - Joni is outstanding.
Good reaction dude, I appreciate your philosophizing and your appreciation of Joni’s honesty as well as artistry. I’m sorry you’re going through tough times right now-hang tough and keep your eyes on the prize. You’re getting through it.
You cannot go wrong with Joni Mitchell, this beautiful tune (just voice & dulcimer) from her Blue album is one of my favourites as is the album, both will remain with me forever. "I am a painter, I live in a box of paints". Maybe try "River" or "My old man" from the same album. Thank you for your reactions & your openness, may your path forward be always open to you.
A young woman named Angelina Jordan has the same ability to use her phrasing, breath control and unique voice to evoke feelings on her covers and original material. Check out “Stay” by Angelina Jordan. It’s an acoustic cover with just a guitar. It will draw you in and she has a large catalog of many covers and original numbers.
Watch the Dick Cavett Show performance of Willy/For Free. This show was Monday of last day of Woodstock with several acts recounting the weekend. Joni didn’t go as her manager was afraid of getting stuck there in traffic. Stunning performances with Jefferson Airplane singing MF live on air during We Can Be Together. Jimi Hendrix was backstage asleep
Thanx again MsJane, for a great Joni vid request. As Joni said before Lee did today: "A cheerful person told me Nobody's harder on me than me! How could they be? And nobody's harder on you than you."
I don't participate at the request level, cuz have to live quite simply,@@janewells5970... Plus, there are just so many great songs from a very long&astonishing career. Too much for me to choose "one"! I love her folk&pop periods, which corresponded with my teen yrs. Then there was her whole jazz-pop fusion (I saw her at the MiliesOfAisles tour with TomScott). But Hejira is my fav lp, which came out just after a left a commune after a yr. Wow! It really hit me hard&long!!!
I don't share your view that she is saying that she is saying "You ain't nothin' " to the person . She could drink a case because they have such a close relationship that he is "in her blood like holy wine", and that their souls had touched, and that the closeness would cancel out any negativity that might result from their differences. She would always have an underlying love for the person, whatever the circumstances.
@@L33Reacts Some say it might be about Graham Nash (of CSN), who wrote "Our House" about the time they lived together, but the bit about Canada could suggest Leonard Cohen or Robbie Robertson (of The Band). I think you will eventually probably do a reaction to the CSNY hit "Woodstock", which was written by Joni. Joni's manager didn't want Joni to perform at Woodstock because she had an important Dick Cavett Show appearance the next day, and traffic was already gridlocked near the festival. She ended up writing the song in a N.Y.C. hotel room, watching news reports of the festival. She was going out with Graham Nash at the time, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young later did a rock arrangement of the song, which became a hit. There are excerpts of that Cavett show on RU-vid with Joni and some people that actually made it back from Woodstock, like Crosby, Stills, and the Jefferson Airplane.
Re: Joni Mitchell - react to her studio work, not the live performances. Joni hated performing live but put a great deal of effort into her recordings: four albums: Blue / Court&Spark / Hissing Of Summer Lawns / Hejira are Joni at her best.
Some other great songs from Joni: Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi (there's a live version with both of these that's very good), Carry, California, Old Man In Paris, Blue and Woodstock, which she wrote for Crosby, Stills & Nash, but she recorded it herself too. Check out the live piano version. Graham Nash from Crosby, Stills, Nash and (sometimes) Young wrote the song Our House about Joni.
Since you’re interested in orchestrations and instruments, her mid ‘70s albums are rife with both. For a more intimate Joni, there’s Blue, which this song is from. Many consider it her best. I consider it a part of a brilliant career.
As you like her voice, check it out 13 years earlier doing this song and others in a BBC tv performance in 1970 on youtube. Also her song Amelia live with film clips of the flyer... and a Pat Methany. solo. Best of luck with your channel,
If you think her voice is good here, this was after years of smoking and her range and clarity had taken a hit. Still, Joni at any age is unique (she's now 80 and just made a return to live performances!) BTW, she suffered from polio as a child and never really recovered full strength in her left hand, which is why she came up with unusual tunings for guitar and dulcimer.
Have you ever watched Steve Marriott of the band the Small Faces? He was the lead singer and guitarist in Humble Pie. Steve came first before Mark Farner made it big.
YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL STUDIO VERSION L33 😊FROM HER EPIC 71 ALBUM ( BLUE ) 👍SHE GETS WAY WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY HIGHER IN THAT FLEXING VOCAL RANGE SHE'S INSANE WITH HER VOICE FOR SURE, THE BEST MAN, HER AND THE FALLEN ANGEL☹ ( KAREN CARPENTER ) BOTH OF THEM TRUE CONTRALTOS💯ENJOYYYY!
“A Case of You “ is about her affair with Graham Nash ( CSN & Y ). Joni was very much a “ flower child of the 60’s and 70’s. Some of her famous lovers were, Leonard Cohen, Davin Crosby, James Taylor and Jackson Browne and a few others…….some more of Joni……”. Woodstock “ “Both Sides Now “ ( when she was young and then the re recording when she was in her fifties ), “ Help Me “ “ Big Yellow Taxi “.
I know there's no way for you to have known but on this particular song, the audio version from the album would have been the best to react to in my opinion, This live version doesn't do this wonderful song justice. She's older in this performance, the cigarettes are starting to show in her usual angelic voice and the performance although good, just does not have the magical, knock-you-off-your-feet and bring you to tears impact that the audio version does. Might want to check it out of you get the chance.
Joni gave up her baby for adoption because she didn't feel (at that time) she could be both a mother and an artist She's now reunited with her grown up daughter
@@L33Reacts Giving up her daughter was not entirely voluntary according to various interviews. She was very young and kind of talked into it. She wrote a song about her daughter before they met again as adults . It's called Little Green (also on the Blue album). Need I say it's utterly beautiful and deeply moving?
After her husband she wrote timing again that she did not have the money to feed her. She did go to welfare for help, but at the time that was before birth control and social services were flooded with children
This is what a dozen or so years of smoking does to your voice. You should check this earlier version Lee (privately, I'm not suggesting that you react to it). It also has some background information about Joni. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pOKESEtmhis.htmlsi=KLpUYdFw3s4JWKOu
