I'm old enough and lucky enough to have seen them in 72/73. Damn they were great. Opening act a pretty good band in their own right, Doobie Brothers. We were spoiled back then but didn't know it yet.

Fun Fact: There was a period at of time after The Buffalo Springfield and before Loggins and Messina got going, in earnest, that Jim was writing music for television and movies. He was asked to write music for the made-for-television comedy western Evil Roy Slade starring John Astin. During the bank robbery scene the music being played is the earliest version of the basic idea of Angry Eyes. I had to watch the scene three or four times because I wasn't sure if I was actually hearing that bass line. Last year I saw Jim Messina and his band and during a post show Q & A session I asked him about it. He then told a short story about his brief starving artist days when this song was originally conceived.

Messina is a really good player. Think about Buffalo Springfield, on their third album, they had Stephen Stills and Neil Young on guitar, with Messina on bass. What an abundance of talent! Lest I forget, Ritchie Furay on guitar and vocals , as well.

The main reason that I went to a Loggins & Messina show in the fall of 1975 was to see The Charlie Daniels Band who were the opening that night. I hadn’t intended to stick around for L&M’s entire show (especially after how good CDB was, I figured it would be anticlimactic), but I changed my mind fairly early into their set. I was shocked at how tight they were that night. I’ve seen lots of bigger acts over the years, but I haven’t enjoyed many shows as much as I did that one. Thanks for the tunes and the memories.

Great songs by these two. Most people just know them from the lighter radio hits but I always loved some of the songs that featured Messina's guitar. Full Sail is a fantastic album filled with great traveling music. Early Poco albums Deliverin and the Oranges album are filled with signature Messina guitar riffs too. Yea, there's a lifetime of amazing music for you to explore!

It's actually hard to tell when Jim is singing and when Kenny is. Messina has a great staccato guitar approach, and he's a brilliant arranger and writer. Angry Eyes is a great example of how he keeps things moving by switching around the members of the ensemble playing. The studio version of "Angry" is fabulous, too. Check out their studio version of "Be Free," another superb '"ong-song." These guys didn't just diddle when they jammed -- it was all so melodic and well-thought-out. I posted before you told me to mention "comment," so I had to go back in and add it. LOL!

As David Crosby once said ‘we gonna do some rock and roll”. This was good ‘ole rock and roll. No comment!! Think of Vahevala as being on an old time sailing ship with the main sails on a creaky sounding mast and they come across a pod of whales and hearing whale songs. And lots of rum🤣🤣🤣

Okay. Here’s my comment. Still on Vahevala as I tap. You mentioned that you’ll turn 30 in a week. On 6/2 I turn 70. So we are forty years apart and on opposite coasts. If not for these problems of time and space, had we crossed paths at the same age, we would likely have become great friends. Brothers from different mothers, decades and oceans. That's my jam right there.... My "comment" would be that when Loggins and Messina broke up, everyone predicted Messina would be the break-out star because of his talent and success with Buffalo Springfield, but it turned out to be Loggins - what a voice.... I was listening to a jazz band in a club many years ago when Loggins (who had played in town earlier that night) stepped up on stage with a guest sax player and played 2 of his songs. He was great! This version of Vahevala took up a whole album side....

Jimmy Messina wanted to produce after the dissolution of the Buffalo Springfield. One of the first artists the label presented him with was Dan Fogelberg. Dan told Jim he wanted to form a band like Poco or the Springfield. Jim, having just survived that mess, wanted no part of a group project. So the label sent Kenny Loggins and they meshed so well together they had a number of hits. Eventually leading to Loggins to bigger things.
