I was at this very concert! Will never forget my friend driving, me in the back seat giving directions. Told him to hang the next right. I didn't mean the one-way busses only right! Cop on motorcycle stops us. Pot smoke pouring out of the windows and a cooler full of beers between us in the back seat. The cop was way cool, laughed and said "you're trying to get to the Neil Young concert, huh?". The next thing we know he's giving us directions and told us just to be careful and have fun!
now THAT is a police officer right there... hahaha... i havent been as lucky with my run ins with the law. but i also was a fucking criminal junkie for a while there so maybe there was a reason... lol. i'm gonna pin your comment since you were. congrats! :D
Nobody sounds like Neil, not only his vocals and lyrics but also his unique tuning and playing of guitar. LIKE A HURRICAN is another killer tune, along with ROCKI'N IN THE FREE WORLD.
I was watching a reaction to America's 'A Horse With No Name' on another channel last night, and the guy said the lead vocals remind him a lot of Neil Young! He's not completely wrong either! 😀
There was a period when Neil's songs had crazy long endings, sometimes with substantial doses of feedback. For those of us who like more Neil Young with their Neil Young. Check out the triple live album Arc-Weld which has a whole 35 minute extra in the form of a collage/mix of just the endings from the songs.
You know what is hilarious about this is that after that false ending, you made a comment about the Beatles and not falling for it again, and I think literally about 3 seconds after you said the word "Beatles", Neil pulls out that one-time reference with his guitar line to the chorus melody of the very popular Beatles song Norwegian Wood. I thought that was so cool.
Neil with the Horse is a fecking force of nature. Ragged Glory Tour in '91,with Social Distortion and Sonic Youth as the opening acts was insane. I'm a lifelong Neil fan but also "young" enough (pushing 60) that I was into Social D and especially Sonic Youth too,and watching a bunch of old hippies at that show digging on those 2 bands...especially Sonic Youth...was a blast. Neil has always liked promoting younger bands that he digs.
that is the sign of a true artist and man right there. help others up, don't push them down. you never know who you might be giving a chance too. that does sound dope as hell though. I love when groups who wouldnt usually hang out are forced to hang out and then they realize how much alike they are and that maybe... just maybe.... we're not all so bad. lol
My fave Neil cut...and the great album cover w/the dog. The most famous one note solo in rock on the record. As others said, the distortion is bombastic, especially on the recording. This is seminal stuff. I'm 73, a chick, and singing loud.
Perhaps Neil's most famous rocker ever. As usual lot so crunch in that distortion. The man LOVES distortion and makes good use of it. If you ever watch a Neil Young concert on video them make it RUST NEVER SLEEPS, his 1976 all-time classic performance. The album of the same name is a mix of live and studio works.
This is one of the best versions I've heard Neil do, he extended the song here. Love that guitar tone. I saw him on this tour, it was loud, he jammed a lot with Crazy Horse, and barely spoke to the audience, he was so lost on the music.
You're right, I saw him at Cincinnati on this tour and he never said "Hi" or "Goodnight" he just came out blew the place down and walked off stage like he was angry...
@@marke8323 he's a quirky guy, all right! I saw him on tour in Landover, MD, the US Air Arena/Capital Centre...I think he waved goodnight but did not say anything at all!
This is the first Neil Young track I ever heard…I was hooked ever since. My friend had just bought this new album…”Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” by this chap called Neil Young. “He’s from that Canadian band Buffalo Springfield” he said to me…”I have just bought it, my mum and dad are out and i have got some beers. Let’s go and listen to it” It was 1969, we were 16 so we pit it on and turned upon the stereo. When we heard that riff we looked at each other and said wow!!! Plated through the whole album twice, Cinnamon Girl had another 3 plays and we got drunk….magic afternoon. Not only the riff…the vocals…and the one note guitar solo. It doesn’t age, it never gets boring, and i still turn up the stereo whenever I play it…..55 years of hearing it and it is still as fresh as it was when I first heard it…..as is “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand”. Neils best album ever IMHO.
The last time I saw Neil & the boys they started a few seconds of Cortez the Killer when Neil called it off. The crowd was bummed but Neil said - Hang on, it will be worth it. He switched guitars and they ripped into an almost 15-minute Cinnamon Girl. Neil was right, it was worth it. Early Neil you should listen to - The Loner and Last Trip to Tulsa.
Place was stacked with hotties. Props to the cameraman. Those fire ascending/descending chords. Notice the Norwegian Wood melody at the close. Great performance.
I was at this tour when it came through LA. I was high as a kite and kept nudging my friend asking "Is this the best music you've ever hear in your life?!?" It was.
that sounds like a good time to me... I wish could have seen this tour. he owns that stage like he just bought it the night before. wild stuff how he just forces your emotions out of you, like it or not lol
The fun fact about this classic that I wasn't even aware of for decades was that his lead guitar 'solo' consisted of playing a single note repeatedly, but by golly, it really works!
An absolutely great song. In my opinion, the ultimate live Neil Young & Crazy Horse one song experience is "Like A Hurricane", live in 1986. Live in 1986!
Neil Young and the Horse are going on a US tour next month. React to "Cowgirl in the sand" live at Red Rocks. A rain storm blows in during that song and Neil get wet , but plays on thru the song. It's Killer!
that is insane he is still touring. good for him, man. i would have retired by his age and just write albums lol. maybe travel but not for touring.... but maybe that's his thing. who knows. good for him :)
This tour was fire, they released it on a double album called "Weld", Crazy Horse at its finest! I have this on DVD also, and I love the audience reaction!
I got to see the show in Dallas and Houston. I think my ears are still ringing, but it was stunning greatness. The tour was to back the album ‘Ragged Glory’, which is one of my all-time favorites.
Neil's first self-titled album is pretty amazing. Definitely some classics on that you should hear. BTW, I have a ticket to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse in early May. I think I've only seen Crazy Horse once, but I saw him with Promise of the Real and at a Bridge School show.
This song encapsulates the reason why Neil Young is considered the grandfather of grunge. The studio version is really worth listening too. Better actually.
i hope you had a good easter my friend! im still exhausted the next day from all the easter shenanigans with the girls... i love this song too! neil is the best.
@@L33Reacts - Poor you! 😅 That does also sound like fun, though! 😊 It doesn't seem all that long ago that my two Sons also were still little - and now the older one is 18 and taller than myself and drums for my band 😄 And I had a very pleasant Easter myself! Thank you, Lee! 😊🙏🎵
This 1991 tour happened right at a time when Neil had finished his 80s genre experiments, had gotten back together with the Horse, made a great album (Ragged Glory) and went on this tour all over North America. This was in the spring of '91, and in September '91 Nirvana released Nevermind, which changed the whole music scene for the better. As you can see in the video, people were still hanging onto their 80s hairstyles, but looking for something new, both in music and in fashion. Grunge provided the change, but with a lot of inspiration from Neil and the Horse - they were grunging back in '69.
This tour (the Ragged Glory tour) happened right in the middle of the first Gulf War, and Neil was f*cking angry about it, so he and the Horse went out, cranked up the amps and channeled all that anger though Old Black. It as a killer tour - the live album, Weld, has a companion CD called Arc, which is all the feedback and distortion from the extended jams they went on, an interesting listen for sure. I saw this tour in Montreal while I was going to university there, had an exam the next day, told the prof I was gonna fail cuz I had tickets to Neil the night before - turns out he was too, so he let me write the exam a day later. Neil and the Horse are still going, I'm seeing them in Ottawa in July, but Pancho has retired, but Neil's old friend and collaborator, Nils Lofgren, has joined the band to take his place. This will be my 6th time seeing him, and I'm pumped - there's nobody quite like Uncle Neil. Great choice, great reaction as always!
Godfather Of Grunge. He looked and sounded like this in 1970, when Kurt Cobain was 3-4 years old. He says Crazy Horse only gets together when the Spirit calls them. If you try to force it, you’ll spook the Horse. He’s not retired. Go see him if you get a chance, with or without Crazy Horse.
The God Father of Grunge, see him live with Pearl Jam at the 1993 MTV Music Awards doing a volcanic Rocking In The Free World. Great stuff, he freaks out Modern listeners!
The Power and the Glory of Rock & Roll! Crazy Horse gave Neal the space and freedom to take off on unreal musical solos and tangents, but always came back to the groove that great band set. This performance is Neal at his rocking best for me. From the same show do Cortez the Killer next. That entire Weld Concert is his heaviest tour, seen him many times but he was on a mission that tour and everything was very loud but such clean, pure volume. Amongst the best! Enjpy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Chicks do dig Neil, and so do the dudes. Billy, Pancho, Ralph and Neil doing it to it. "Cinnamon Girl" is one of his best Rockers, IMO, but you should check out one of his "newer" tunes called "Rockin' In The Free World". There is a really great 15 minute or so version from England that is kickin', Neil just won't end the song, which is about 6-7 minutes normally. Also, "This Note's For You".
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Powder Finger Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My ( Into the Black ) Neil Young - Like A Hurricane Neil Young - Helpless Bryan Ferry Nuits de Fourviere Live in Lyon - Like a hurricane (Neil Young cover)
Fantastic! Pleeeeeze, do Like A Hurricane, Live from 1977, with the wind machine, out of all the amazing versions of that song, 77 is the most emotional, honestly, it can move you to tears.
The real “Cinnamon Girl” is folk singer Jean Ray, whose brother Brian, is singer/guitarist who was musical director for Etta James and has been guitarist/bassist for Paul McCartney since 2001. Neil is touring right now with Crazy Horse. Willie Nelson’s son is filling in for Nils Lofgren who is touring in E Street Band with Bruce Springsteen
An absolutely killer performance by Neil is his SNL appearance doing “Rockin in the Free World.” It’s what “playing as if your life depended on it” sounds like.
I've always had a love/hate with Neil. He's at times a genius but often an overbearing preachy blowhard. Now he's an old man yelling at clouds. Still, he's the godfather of grunge. I pick and choose with him. Cinnamon Girl is a keeper.
Thanks, I never saw this film. I was 31, wish I was there. If you think Neil moves weird, it's because of a history of epilepsy. He recorded Harvest in a body brace! Love him ❤
Saw this tour in Vancouver. Neil was dubbed the King of Grunge by Eddie that year. Man that was the best show. Thanks for this.. brings back great memories.
Based on your history and your comments, I bet you would really enjoy the later documentary made about him. It was in the weeks before he was heading into have brain surgery for a tumor and there was at least a significant chance that he would not make it through it. So he shares his thoughts and feelings and music and a glimpse of his personal life, in case he doesn't come back. It's so beautifully done, it's really beautiful. And it was lovingly done by Jonathan Demme, who is one of my favorite filmmakers. Neil Young: Heart of Gold is a 2006 American documentary/concert film by Jonathan Demme, featuring Neil Young. It documents Young's premiere of his songs from his album Prairie Wind at the Ryman Auditorium.
I grew up listening to this man and many others, we were young and opposing the establishment for good reason, now, sadly Neil and too many others back the establishment, they became what they were fighting against...is just how my 69 yr old fried brain sees it
"you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" comes to mind when I read your comment. i dont know anything about his current stuff or views so i'll leave it at that.
For an EPIC CSNY performance check out their 1971 live version of Southern Man. A great Neil tune taken to a whole other level with some amazing guitar work by Stills and Young.
Gotta love Neil's early ‘90s look - the haircut, the flannel shirt and jeans. Between that and the raw sound, it's no wonder he's known as the Godfather of Grunge. That guitar he's playing here is Old Black, a customized 1953 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top that Neil got in a trade with Jim Messina back in 1966. His primary electric guitar for many years. One of Neil's other guitars, an acoustic, is an old Martin D-28 that belonged to Hank Williams, the original one, not Jt. He wrote a song about that one, titled “This Old Guitar.” In that song Neil sings, “This old guitar ain't mine to keep, it's only mine for a while.”
that's a great lyric for that guitar. i don't own this body, i'm just borrowing it :) i dig his look. it is very grungy. him and Ann from heart are the godfather and godmother of grunge it seems lol
I saw this Tour at the Cincinnati Gardens, I think it was "Smell the Horse Tour" which became "Weld" when it was released with live footage from the tour. I was disappointed at the time because he didn't do any acoustic (No Internet back then so you never knew what a show was going to be like in advance). But I appreciate it now for what it was, In your face, blow your mullet hair back, onslaught!
Nope his electric way better than Acoustic which is normally the problem with Little wimpy youtube requesters most only do his acoustic so Noone usually hear his electric...really stupid when all they play is Needle and Damage done and Old Man...can't hold a candle to 4 way street
