The live video of Neil and Crazy Horse doing Like a Hurricane from 1977 or 1978. Plaid shirt, wind machine blowing his hair and everyone's head. Lots of stuff from Mr Young yet to hear. Good job L33
The story goes that Neil had just written this, the other cats hadn’t heard it yet…only 3 chords, so Neil turned on the tape deck in his barn studio, early in the morning, and they learned it together . The long opening guitar bit is their trying to find that swaying groove Neil was looking for. Part of why it sounds so fresh, real 🎸🎸🎤🥁👍
also there was another verse to come hence the fade out as when they were recording it Neil's dad Scott tripped on a lead and killed the power to the recording desk- when his producer told him Neil after the band finished and they heard were it cut off Neil said he didnt really like that verse anyway and to go with this recording
I would love you to react to Buffalo Springfield Neil Young song “Expecting to Fly”. Also Cowgirl in the Sand” , “Cinnamon Girl”, and “Hey,hey,my my” ❤
This might be might favorite of Neil, if that's possible. For the guitar, it's beauty, story. Did I mention beauty? ❤ 🥰🎶THANKS FOR THE 😮REQUEST AND FOR THE REACTION!!! YOU ROCK
"It makes your heart think." That's an excellent description of Neil Young's music, ditto CSN&Y. What you're doing isn't "nothing": you're reaching thousands of people, making our hearts think. Thank you!
Live version of Cortez the killer on Live Rust album is magic too. Check Neil Young Live Rust album. I wore the grooves of the album out in the seventies. Had to buy a new copy .
"Like A Hurricane" is another killer song with extraordinary guitar in Neils's unique master of time and space playing. "Cowgirl In The Sand" and Rockin' In The Freeworld" too.
Neil and the Horse had a fantastic run in the early 70s, they never missed. The Ditch Trio as he called those records are all worth a listen. The song Revolution Blues was almost punk before punk existed.
Ahh, this is SO good. Young's entire album "Sleeps With Angels" is all like this. Incredible. You ought to give it a listen. He has a lot more else like this, too.
We wore out the NY& Crazy horse album when I was a senior in HS. Eventually you’ll find “Harvest” which has nothing but amazing songs on it. His greatest album….
I'm 71 as well, and have seen bands that you young dudes can only dream about. I've seen Niel 4 times 2 just him, guitar, piano and harmonica. One of the times he had an elderly man setting up this guitars, placed a candelabra on his piano and chairs in position. My love for Niel grew when he introduced him as his dad. How cool was that. One acoustic show in Providence RI he played for over 3 hours. The other two were with Crazy Horse. Those concerts were so intense, the loudest band I've ever heard. My ears rand for hours after.. The audience was awesome, people passing joints and a few mushrooms. CRAZY HORSE lit the fuse for Niel and all hell broke loose on the stage. His live performances were beyond description. A wizard going OFF to a place were only he knew existed. I got to meet him once back stage with my younger brother. Neil loved seeing the 2 generations that he had made an impact. Neil Young with Crazy House was raw rock n roll.
Hi Lee..........This is some of my favorite Neil Young Guitar work. You don't have to play a million notes a second to pull off one of the greatest solos ever!! Full of emotion.
As much as Neil just started singing lyrics in earlier compositions, he set the mood for this one perfectly, he didn’t ‘ hurry’ this song -too many artists don’t do this - his voice is perfect for his songs/message
Such a killer choice - the song that got Neil Young banned in Spain, at the tail end of Franco's regime. Brilliant stuff, Poncho's first album with the band, and Neil is in the groove on this one for sure, at his expressive best. Great reaction as always, much love from Canada!
Great choice Lee. 👍The very opening chords of this song immediately puts me at 'Peace' and then Neil being Neil takes the listener away on a Sojourn of sound. What a precious Talent he is. 👏
Ok. Been a huge Neil Young fan since 1969. Never heard this song, not even on my bootleg vinyl Neil with Crazyhorse . Yours is the channel to beat right now Lee. All good things to you. Cinnamon Girl, Down By the River, or go back to Buffalo Springfield and Mr. Soul.
…..now you have to listen to this song off there live album Neil Young & Crazy hoarse” (Live Rust) even better 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 great reaction ! Love your passion 🙏🏻❤️🤗
One of my favorite songs by Neil. The last time I saw him he had just started this song and then stopped - the crowd wasn't happy. He said, "It will be OK, don't worry", and they ripped into a 15-minute Cinnamon Girl. He was right, it was OK. My brother saw him a few days later and I asked him if they had done this at that show. He said no, they got Cortez but no Cinnamon Girl. For a couple of early Neil songs give a listen to The Loner and The Last Trip to Tulsa.
The direct/in the moment, emotional sincerity of this recording is rare AF, and gives this song resonance beyond its lyric's contents. For me personally, I used this track as my go-to slow dirge, to help me process my feelings about my father's death 5 years ago. Repeated listens in the months after that helped me just sit with those heavy feelings in the comfort of "musician friends I'd been listening to for decades." (Quoting FZ: Music is the best~~~)
When I was in high school, WLIR on Long Island would play a full new release LP in its entirety every Thursday night at 9. We all listened and some taped. The week this was played I was blown away. (The releases each week back then are all classics now. What does that say about the contemporary music scene?)
@@patriciab825 I heard so many great records for the first time at 9 on Thursday nights…. it was a primitive form of reaction content since we all could talk about it the next day
I spent a lot of time helping a friend's Neil Young cover band "LAZYHORSE" in the 2000's doing recording and mixing chores, and they were the ones who introduced me to so many of Neil's best songs including obscure gems. There are dozen's I could suggest. Goad we got here.
Seen him many times saw him do this live at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz , “ the world’s greatest garage band “. Crazy Horse band is perfect band for Neil all in their mid to late 70’s still rocking in the free world. Check out the live version of Neil and crazy horse
I know this has happened before to me when listening to this song, but just now, watching you and listening, I just dissolved into tears during the main solo.......and am fighting tears now, as I type these words. Thank you for such an emotional reaction!🥲
My old band played Cortez into Maggot Brain at the close of our show. All the chords are the same except an Am7 to a Bm. Lots of fun back then, when these tunes were on the radio on a regular basis.
I remember ,someone joked that it's an almost 20 min solo from start to finish....really though......Neil is an underated guitarist for sure..............
YEAH AND HE PLAYS THOSE CRAZY INSANE 😮 DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHORDS, IT'S INSANE AND JUST SO GOOD LEE!!! 😊IT'S GONNA BE FIFTYYYYYY ( 50 ) YEARS NEXT YEAR, THAT'S CRAAAZZYYYYY TO ME! 💯 THAT'S WHY THE ORIGINALLLL IS THE REAL DEAL 95% OF THE TIME CAUSE IT'S THEIRS, THAT'S WHY! 😊
In a way, I had a similar reaction to your reaction that you had to this song. It's one that I don't often play, maybe because of the long intro, but I haven't heard it in a long time but of course I used to play it all the time and I had forgotten how much I really actually love this song. And you know what? It made my allergies act up.
I think you might like the movie Dead Man by Jim Jarmush. The soundtrack is solo Neil. It’s a black and white western with great actors (including Iggy Pop!) starring Johnny Depp. Neil Young’s sparse lone guitar is a perfect backdrop to the movie’s theme. Love your reactions always L33! You help me as much as the site is helping you. I love this trajectory! 🎉❤
One thing I do know is that for a while I had a playlist that would have Cortez the Killer and then it would be followed by Powderfinger from his Rust Never Sleeps album a few years later. It's such an emotional heavy hitter and it is done so well. I mean it is done soooo well. And yeah, it was a hit. I really never thought about it until this moment, but I wonder if one reason I had them back-to-back, is because in a way they have similar themes but it's about two completely different encounters in two totally different contexts, but both were historical such as in this case. But I mean that song kicks fucking ass. It really does. They fucking rock it out even as they're being deep and poignant.
You talk about lost times being unlocked, that was my feelings as well. I am a 66yo Architect from N.Y., and I was around at that time when that song came out. Took me back to me feeling and remembering as I was then, a teenager. Very cool.
Do yourself a favor and watch Neil's self directed concert film "Rust Never Sleeps". It catches Neil at the peak of his career, 1978, and has many of his best songs. You see him solo playing Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica and Piano, and then Electric Guitar with Crazy Horse. And the way Neil stomps around the stage is great, and just watch Billy Talbot do his thing, in a Lynyrd Skynyrd T-Shirt. Crazy, Crazy Horse.
Chas- Neil has his own merch site, called The Greedy Hand, and "Rust Never Sleeps" is available from there, in Blu-Ray too. I know because I have it myself. Happy hunting.
Late 60's and the 70's produced the most iconic music of all time by so many different bands/artists. I can' listen to todays music or very little of it. Wait till you listen to his Decade album. It has all his great music on 3 records
It's me too. Turned 61 last month and this song sounds better than ever I need to listen to it more!!! Great channel man. You fire and you growing...❤❤❤
Neil may not be the most technically sound guitarist, but he has a knack for conveying emotion through his strings, He wrote this gem while in high school...I've been a fan since the mod 70s, "American Stars and Bars' album. He and Robin Trower are two of my favorite blues/rock guitarists...For sh!ts and giggles, do a react to 'Maggot Brain', check out the back story. Eddie Hazel is another awesome guitarist gone too soon.
On the Beach has some real soulfully, slow bluesy stuff. My favorite album. Last song on side 2, Ambulance Blues my friend, will take you back. It's an homage to his early days in Toronto before the fame.
Hi Lee, enjoying your reactions. As a recovering addict, you should definitely hear Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done". The song is his reaction to losing two friends to heroin. The acoustic guitar line is exquisite.
The live version of this on the Weld album is amazing and has that outro you were starving for. I think Danger Bird measures up to this song in every way imo. One of my favorite albums, every song is a gem. Lou Reed said Danger Bird has one of the most beautiful guitar he's ever heard, I don't disagree. The whole Weld album live 1991 is amazing.
68 and still listening. I bought this (and Red Octopus by Jefferson Starship) in a record shop in 1975 San Fransico. I was in the US Coast Guard aboard their largest sea-going cutter, USCGC Midgett assigned to PACOM (Pacific Fleet Command) and about to embark on an extended patrol from San Diego, California to Point Barrow, Alaska ...and quite literally all points in between. It turned into nearly a year at sea and to say we played the HELL out of this would have been an understatement.
A really good friend of mine was an addict, he was so bloody talented could listen once and play anything on the guitar. His addiction drove us appart I hope like you he overcame it, it shames me that I couldn't stand by him. You give me the hope that he came out of the other end. I applaude you for overcoming what you have music is a healer. Oh yeah by the way Neil Young is my favourite guitarist by a mile. Listen to Birds.
Were almost to 15k...thats awesome bro. Im 63 coming at ya from Toronto... Your selection of tunes is the key to more subs. This is a great choice Everyone is telling you what to listen to haha. your selection of Floyd has been good. One day when you have some time check out Childhoods End from Obscured by Clouds. Its been hiding in the bush for years. GREAT WORK LEE
One of his best guitar solos along with Like a Hurricane which will literally blow you away! This song, as Neil has pointed out in an interview, have some inaccuracies though still great!
