That was one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. You are so correct on how listening to Hocus Pocus first was almost a crime. This was completely different in every way and it was wonderful!

1000 thanks for this reaction. On the "First Listen channels", Focus is always reduced to the two songs "Hocus Pocus" and "Sylvia", just as the band Argent is always reduced to "Hold Your Head Up" and possibly "God Gave Rock And Roll To You". Yet both bands have so much more to offer.

GREAT CHOICE! The wonderful FOCUS needs to be heard and known for far more than just Hocus Pocus. Their work was deeply moving! Another peak that was 1970-74 that transports me right back emotionally to the nostalgic golden years of my teens when all the greatest were reaching milestones simultaneously. It was quite overwhelming to have such never before imagined music pouring out of these artist and flooding our souls

@@L33Reacts no crime just a glimpse of this great band. The rest of the album is fantastic and then there is more brilliance called FOCUS 3, etc...Not to bombard but another HUGELY unappreciated 70's Band is HAPPY THE MAN who happened to be American yet are the most PURE Prog ever out of the States. Songs' "New York Dream Suite" or "Mr. Mirror's Reflection On Dreams" are great places to start

Fun fact: Jan Akkerman was chosen ‘best guitarist in the world’ by Melody Maker in 1973. And you definitely have to check out their piece Anonymous Two, starting with a medieval theme and giving all four band members plenty of room to solo, with great interplay. It’s 26 minutes long, but over before you know. Highly recommended!

I remember discussing this album with "Whispering" Bob Harris who presented the legendary 70s BBC music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test". Bob and the BBC had no real idea of the size of the shows audience as it was a late night show that played strange music and was presented by a softly spoken hippy. When they had Focus, a Dutch band whom no-one had really heard of, on as guests, the re-action was so great that their record label had to suspend all other LP pressings to keep up with the sudden and totally unexpected demand for "Moving Waves.."..Bob told me that it was only then that they realised just how powerful the show was... I also remember telling him that age 16, I was one of those who immediately ran out and bought the album...

Yup.... I was one of those who watched the show, saw them, and went out to buy the record... And you talking to the legend that is Whispering Bob... Showing off now man. That means something to this Brit.

That is such a cool origin story for so many fans.. that is so special. That is the power of shows and channels like this... so many people tune in that if a new band is out of this world, people will catch on WAY quicker. Good for them. That is so cool.

I was 19 years of age when I bought this album, (in 1971), and I couldn't wait to get home to play it. I was blown over by the first side, then when I played 'Eruption' that's when it started, I remember thinking "If this is the future of music, then the future looks bright". I remember upon hearing the track 'Tommy' which incidentally wasn't written by Focus, tears ran down my face, I thought "This is heaven..."

So glad you decided to do this one, Lee. When I first got this album, I was only into loud guitar stuff. My music collection consisted of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. That was it! I LOVED Akkerman's guitar in Hocus Pocus when I heard it as a single, so got this album. At first, I wasn't really into much of the rest of the album, but it won me over and broadened my horizons into the prog world. It was my gateway!

Yeah, it's actually natural, I believe, that when you hear a great piece of music, you think, "That's the best music I've ever heard!" Many people noticed it in the case of BAND-MAID. Many Maidiacs say, "The best BAND-MAID song is the one currently playing." But it holds for all great songs.

Bravo for your reaction. Curiosity, the desire to discover outside of one's zone or these comfort zones of what one thinks are one's preferences can sometimes lead to very beautiful discoveries. That's what I felt with this group. This is one of the most talented groups I have ever heard. For example, the drummer Pierre Van der Linden is one of the most original and therefore recognizable drummers that I know. When we talk to him about his influences or what he listened to when he was younger, he often cites Buddy Rich and others, which really sets his level. You were able to discover the level of the other instrumentalists, in fact they do not need to sing. Beyond the technicality, what differentiates them from most of the groups I have heard is above all their extraordinary musicality due in part to their eclecticism. like the organist and flautist and the guitarist. for me the best line-up is that of the 1972 album entitled Focus 3 with the change of bassist and the replacement named Bert Ruiter. The guitarist is the most complete that I have heard. I invite you to listen to his solo work, you have the impression that he is another guitarist. He has a technique, a musical richness, a unique feeling. Unlike many others, he was never afraid of taking risks. To return to the group more generally, they put technique at the service of musicality and not the other way around, that for me is one of their greatest merits. I advise you to listen to the album Focus 3 and not to miss the song question answer answer question the song Anonymous number 2. If you liked the solos in this eruption piece then you will not be disappointed. and another album with a piece called hamburger concerto and why not the whole album. Be well 😊

@@L33Reacts thanks bro, sweet words too! :) I'd recommend for further Focus explorations the 'Hamburger Concerto' - the whole album is a master piece, and all 4 tracks before the final massive and brilliant title track are worth checking out: the first 3 have all that flair of Dutch-ness built in... Harem Scarem alternates between fast and slow, and the slower parts are so, so Dutch - thats it!! Track 4 'Birth' will be right down your alley too. I've seen other cool recommendations for next Focus tracks too... wherever you choose to go from Eruption, you won't regret it, but you also have just covered a true highlight of them... rave on, man! 😎

Great response to good music from my youth. Focus guitarist Jan Akkermann was an outstanding rock and jazz guitarist and was voted the world's best guitarist by the British music magazine "Melody Maker" in 1973. There were several excellent Dutch bands in the seventies. Golden Earring was the most successful. When Yes saw them in concert for this album, it inspired to up their game and helped to create Close to the Edge. Most of he whole album is worth listening/reacting to: 1] Meeting of the Spirits 2] Dawn 3] The Noonward Race 4] A Lotus on Irish Streams 5] Vital Transformation 6] The Dance of Maya 7] Awakening Bonus track: Live version of The Noonward Race. I was drawn to Focus by the beautiful Moving Waves cover, with absolutely no idea of what was in store musically. The yodeling on Hocus Pocus was surprsing, yet somehow it worked. Eruption just sealed the deal for me, and I was an instant fan. I agree with other people who recommend Hamburger Concerto, their very best composiotion, in my humble opinion. If you want another representation of the band's talents, I humbly recommend Anonymous II. If you are put off by the song's length (it takes up a full side and a half on vinyl), then try the original Anonymous from their debut album. It's much shorter and still gives each member a moment or two to shine.

Thank you I've been recommending Focus for a long time to you even mentioning don't do Hocus Pocus it's not what I really considered progressive rock. Eruption is perfect along with all of their other great progressive rock tracks. Next to Jeff Beck Jan akkerman is my favorite guitarist and t h e j i s Van Lear is one of my top keyboard players right behind the great Keith Emerson Rick Wakeman hand Chick Corea😮 awesome thank you😊

Agree with you totally on Jan and Jeff. Two guitarists who have an aversion to cliches and constantly surprise and delight. I really miss Jeff, let's hope Jan has many years left in him.

Do yourself a favor if you get the chance Google Focus live and rare and you'll get to see on RU-vid live videos from 1970 to 76. Then you will really appreciate the musicianship of these guys especially the lead guitarist Jan akkerman😮

@@L33Reacts you won't regret it believe me. I've always bragged about Jan akkerman and sadly he is so underrated yet nobody can hardly touch him except maybe Jeff Beck and he's dead.

This tune is crazy good. Prog with heavy jazz, interesting melodies and riffs. These guys really knew what they were doing. Musical folk, classical overtones, Santana, Gregorian chants? Really?
