As it was suggested by one of the Patrons who requested this video, I did these two tracks together! A Van Twofer for PSS and Carole. Thank you for your support and these great songs. I enjoyed the swing feel to "Moondance" and loved the spiritual healing in "Into the Mystic". What an artist this man is.

"It's Too Late to Stop Now" is the 1974 live album recorded during the LA and London shows of Van's 1973 tour with his eleven-piece band, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. The title was inspired by the last line of "Into the Mystic". It's up there with one of the greatest live albums. In 2016 a box set and DVD were released with additional performances from that tour.

Well stated. I completely agree. I think it's my favorite live album after only The Band's sendoff "The Last Waltz" which also featured Van.

The entire album is incredible. The final mix was done by a very young Elliot Scheiner, who went on to engineer Steely Dan’s classic albums as well as other landmark records for other artists. The band on the album were guys from the Woodstock area in NY where Van was living at the time. Oddly enough, most of the guys never heard of him before working with him. BTW, John Klingberg, the bassist, died at the young age of 40 in 1985.

This is Van The Man at his Best. I mean the opening line: "We were born before the wind" IS Pure Poetry. LYRICS: We were born before the wind Also, younger than the sun 'Ere the bonnie boat was won As we sailed into the mystic Hark now, hear the sailors cry Smell the sea and feel the sky Let your soul and spirit fly Into the mystic Yeah, when that fog horn blows I will be coming home Yeah, when that fog horn blows I wanna hear it I don't have to fear it And I wanna rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old Then magnificently we will float Into the mystic When that fog horn blows You know I will be coming home Yeah, when that fog horn whistle blows I gotta hear it I don't have to fear it And I wanna rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And together we will float Into the mystic Come on, girl Too late to stop now By Van Morrison.

Just 5 short years after doing "Gloria" and "Here Comes The Night" he was doing this stuff and still just 23-24. Only two years earlier he was doing "Brown Eyed Girl" which was catchy and fun but never hinted at the level of genius he was capable of. Remarkble growth. Plus, Van wrote and recorded Moondance in 1969-70 after already cutting a masterpiece right before it that you should definitely check out called Astral Weeks (1968). That LP and Moondance have to be listened to in full to be appreciated. He did some amazing work off and on for years afterward but those two albums are his magnum opuses for sure. Basically, almost every album he made in the 70s is a must (aside from maybe A Period of Transition) and even less-than-essential releases like Wavelength and Hard Nose The Highway are full of hidden gems. Even his shortchanged 80s period is worth exploring but not until after you've checked out his 1970-79 work.

This album was the debut of the core of his backing band (the Caledonia Soul Orchestra) for the next few years: Jack Schroer on saxes, John Platania (pla-tahn-ya) on guitar, and Jef Labes (laybis) on keyboards. Don't miss the opening track, "And It Stoned Me," where young Van and his best bud get high on life and a glass of water.

Van Morrison was a staple of the San Francisco music scene in the 70s. I saw him several times including at Filmore West, Winterland and The Lion's Share. The latter is a small club in San Anselmo, just north of the city, with a real intimate setting. I also bought most of his early records and still have the vinyl LPs. He never disappointed and always had first rate musicians playing with him.

Two of my faves from Van the Man. TUPELO HONEY , WILD NIGHT, BROWN-EYED GIRL, and JACKIE WILSON SAID are some early Vans you should know. MOONDANCE is sixties West Coast Jazz, and never heard Irish in there (that's West Coast USA, like Brubeck and Guaraldi). The flute became a staple in West Coast Jazz once the Beat generation explored that subgenre. They never heard anything like MOONDANCE arrangement in the twenties or thirties. INTO THE MYSTIC is about passing into Eternity/Death, or 'moving on'.

As to your remark about listening to music with eyes closed, I also find that to be the best way. Back in the 70s and before, there were no music videos to bee seen. I find videos to be a distraction for the most part. Sure, some may add something but I like the first listen to be absorbed unencumbered.

Another Northern Ireland singer song writer worth checking is Paul Brady. The island or crazy dreams are both great. Agree with your Dead comment too. While respecting Van Morrison as the originator of this song I commend to you Bobby McFerrin's smouldering interpretation of 'Moondance' on his first album. The cool sensitivity of his delivery, the hip reharmonisation which breaks free of repetition, and McFerrin's lip trumpet solo combine to make the original sound like a TV jingle for an air frier. If I was in the moonlight and in the market, I'm damn sure who I'd want singing to me, just sayin'.
