I couldn't believe it when, back in 2022 Steve Hackett came to Torquay, near my home town of Paignton, Devon. UK! The first half of the show was some of his solo stuff, but the second half was the whole of Foxtrot. To top it all the encores were Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos & Firth of Fifth. What a Gig! - Love your reactions, by-the-way.
Yes, that's the ultimate version! I have always had a problem with covers... This one is ok though. Even Steve Hackett can't copy Genesis soul. With that said, I love Steve and most of his music. ❤️
Did you notice the other Guitar player was playing a right handed Guitar lefthanded. That is what Jimi Hendrix did. I would have loved to see more camera on him just to watch the chord structures. That guy has incredible talent to even attempt that. Hats off dude
Amazing performance. Incredible guitarist and human: Steve Hackett. I totally get why you picked those three songs as your faves... For me: "THE MUSICAL BOX" is number one. Their version on "The Midnight Special" show with Gabriel and Hackett is absolutely brilliant... and when you see them perform it live, you might change your rankings.... My other favorite two songs: "DANCING OUT WITH THE MOONLIT KNIGHT" ... and then a tie between "FLY ON A WINDSHIELD / BROADWAY MELODY OF 1974" "FIRTH OF FIFTH," and "SUPPER'S READY"... ALL of those songs feature Hackett's blistering guitar.
Such amazing grace in these songs. Such beauty. So many memories of nights partying and listening to these tunes. I’ve seen Hackett in concert 2 or 3 times, most recently here in Paris where they did Foxtrot 50th anniversary. Sublime wonder and joy 🥲
One of the songs I live for. Hackett is the last man standing for old time art rock. Seen him the last two tours and will watch anytime he comes anywhere near. He also put together a great band.
The final solo I never knew I needed until Hackett just put it out there. This is for me now the greatest version, can't believe it took so long when it seems so natural and ends the song better.
That solo Steve plays at the end was absolutely incredible when I saw him live in Monterey, California. I'm looking forward to his current tour featuring songs from the Lamb album.
Parts of that performance made me tear up, the way Nad phrases and sings certain words, even just Steve sustaining a single note with a tone that orbits the Earth like a dove. Amazing.
Saw Steve and this band about two years ago at a small theater. Shrooms were involved. The show was incredible and the singer and band were top notch. The sound was amazing. Steve still has it, for sure. This song brought down the house. His solos and tapping, etc. were amazing on solo material and Genesis. When I went to get a beer at intermission the 20 something girl tending bar said, "they're killing it." So glad Steve is keeping their Gabriel era music alive.
I have been extremely lucky and blessed to have seen this masterpiece performed live by Genesis in 1974, 1980, and excerpts in 2022. Also by The Musical Box at least 5 times, and by Steve's band another 6 or 9 times. It always moves me to tears at the climax. After so many years I have come to realize that the piece itself is a work of genius. The musicians who happen to be playing it are the vectors of this genius, so long as they are competent on their instruments and their hearts are in the right places. Exactly like hearing Beethoven's 9th last movement - the Chorale. That's what makes this a classic for the ages.
It's crazy to think this was over 10 years ago. Gary's backing vocals were a huge bonus to this group. About that closing solo, Steve's always had a huge love of the blues, which never found much of an outlet in the prog/Genesis stuff. So it was super cool when he let rip with a blues-y solo at the end of this song to discover how amazingly well it worked.
I scheduled dedicated time today to listen to this. This deserves quality listening and full attention. Hackett to Bits - the GTR version is him & Steve Howe doing a medley of Steve’s solo work up to 1985 and it quite fantastic and better than the original Steve Hackett version of that song. The addition of Howe is a plus to any new version of a song.
I was as thrilled as you were - Steve and his band are just incredible and it sounds better than Genesis sounded 50 years ago! This epic piece of music is pure genius. You have passion in music and I like your reactions. Keep on rolling and greetings from Prague.
So Great that Steve is keeping this Genesis music alive. And so faithfully well done. I was reluctant to listen to this because it is so iconic. But it is SO good. It must have been so fun (and challenging) to perform.
That was a great tour saw the show in Vicar Street Dublin, and in Hammersmith London. The band were on fire, highlight was John Wetton singing Afterglow. Steve Hackett was the true romantic soul of Genesis, and always paid great homage to his time with the band kept their music alive. If you can see do this with the full orchestra at Festival Hall London from 2019 it's utterly amazing with incredible sonic power, it's on youtube. Great to see you enjoy this one Lee, 'can't you feel our souls ignite, shedding ever changing colours'. I can.
Thanks for that, Lee! I just got in from a late flight, that was delayed, so, with everyone else asleep, I put on the headphones and was so pleased to stumble upon your latest video of Steve Hackett performing Supper's Ready. Steve always gives such a great performance when he does those old Genesis songs, and I agree with you that Nad Sylvan sings it so powerfully. Thanks for the video! 😎😎❤❤👍👍
Is there an objective "light side" or light source? Yes, it is in you and it is you, good Lee. It's in all of us but we have to act on it, express it, share it, and manifest it in our lives. But it is definitely there, with us.
I´ve had the privilege to see the band in Barcelona about six years ago and in Madrid June 2023. They played Supper´s Ready in both gigs, and the long guitar solo at the end was different each time, but always made my eyes water. I also was so happy to hear "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" in Madrid beacause they played the whole Foxtrot album. Whoever has the chance to see them live, don´t hesitate for a second, it is well worth it!
I try and see Steve Hackett every year as he tours like a Mother F. Every year he gets better how as a 70 plus year old guy he is great he keeps the Genesis Prog years alive. Go and see him while you can he puts on a great show. If you never saw Genesis or even if you saw the recent tour this is the version to see. This show was good but check out the later tours they are all recorded live and are even better than this.
Nad Sylvan is an amazing artist. You need absolutely to check his solo work, I recommend you to listen "What Have You Done" or "The Bride Said No"... and more. Steve was lucky to find that singer whose magnificent voice just replace perfectly Peter original's voice. Been watchinh them just few days ago see them in Brussels for their new "Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo" tour! Magical!!! I hope you will have the opportunity to go see them and enjoy so much as me...
Posted 3 months ago and in 3 short months I will be sat at a table having just eaten and will then watch Steve perform Horizons from about 10ft away in a room of about 150 people, can't wait. Trading Boundaries is one of the greatest places in the whole of the UK.
The thunderous bass you heard but didn’t see was played by Lee Pomeroy via bass pedals on the floor while he also played second guitar, same as Mike Rutherford did with Genesis. You’re right about the majesty of this song. I think the forces of good and evil in the world that this song suggests are a function of human intent and interpretation. Whatever such things are, they have been captured and shared in this song.
Lee Pomeroy played with three members of Gentle Giant in their GG band Three Friends and has toured with Steven Wilson. Nad Sylvan's solo albums are also very good.
The Todmobile version of the song with Hackett is well worth checking out. It has an orchestra and choral group in Finland I believe. Hackett really shines in the extended outro in that rendition.
First saw this at Hammersmith Odeon in 76 with Bruford on drums. We got huge inflatable flowers during Willow Farm. Lost count how many times since but the latest version has the most amazing guitar outro. BTW Horizons is a gorgeous rip off of Bach with some lovely modulations in the middle. Not hard to play but very difficult to play like Steve.
Woah! Last time I saw Steve Was the Spectral Mornings tour (you know I’m older than Gandalf). He’s put together an awesome band; it’s - dare I say it - as good as the original Genesis “Foxtrot” live tour. Respect due, Mr. H.
Lee Pomeroy is on guitar and bass. Notice he is left handed and plays a right handed bass. It is upside down! You should see him solo as he did on the song, Sierra Quemada.
Such an awesome "cover" of this song. It sounds so much like the original its amazing. The left handed/right handed guitar has to be difficult. And that shirt! Is that puffy shirt from Sienfield? Lol
I saw Genesis quite a few times with Gabriel, and I've seen Hackett quite a few times in recent years too. I don't think people realise quite how silly Gabriel could be on stage. Great fun, but I actually, dare I say it, prefer Nad's more serious performance of Supper's Ready live. And Supper's Ready is one of the great, great, songs, and, incidentally, Genesis were rubbish without Gabriel. But you know that.
Steve Hackett is the only one carrying on with this great music. Gabriel can't be bothered, Tony Banks was brilliant but a pain in the ass, Phil is infirm and I'm not sure about the brilliant Mike Rutherford.
I always marvel at Steve Hackets skill on a guitar, but I just do not care for this singer or these tunes, However, the little intro piece was nice and some of the instrumental sections were great. Could have used a lot more of that. However, after listening for 23 minutes, I have to issue a thumbs down.
