Quote from Carey on clicks: “It's a sad thing when almost every band you see isn't playing doing that, it's the clicks and backing tracks that are keeping time. I've never played to a click on stage in my life. You have to put yourself in this environment that's vulnerable and just fucking go off in the moment.”

Mmm, I'm of the mind that it's not necessary to throw shade at bands who play to clicks. It CAN be a crutch if bands let it, but I think sometimes we let ourselves think that using it is "cheating" when it really isn't. If you can't play, a click isn't gonna make you that much better. Actually, it takes certain amount of skill to play to one and not sound dull and robotic. That said, I 1000% agree that if you can play this tight at this level of complexity without a click track, that definitely deserves monumental praise.

@Thomas Grey Yeah, technically there is a regular timing that is maintained for most of it, but the difficulty of using a regular click with those meter changes means it would probably be harder than not using one at all, not to mention the points where beats are deliberately way off-time. It's like some Frank Zappa shit except it still actually sounds like music. Incredible.

The only other drummer I'd put on Danny's technical skill level is Peart (RIP). Also, the reason he's so tough to count is due to Poly-rhythms. It's often much easier to count off of Justin (bass), since Danny's often using the drums as almost a backing vocal track at times.

This new album is a totally different experience to their other stuff, you can really see the maturity. Invincible is on a par with this song, although totally different. “You’ve now made me feel as if I know absolutely nothing about drums, and I’m gonna have to start learning about drums all over again” I hear that! I’m a professional chef. I started in 1993 as a pastry chef, and worked that for twelve years. Then I jumped over to the other side and had been going on that for another 8 years. Having knowledge of both pastry and hot food, I thought I was pretty well versed. I had basically fallen into repetition... I sort of accidentally ended up eating at a 3 star Michelin restaurant (Manresa) and was fretting about how much it was costing me before I got there. I was maybe three courses (out of 17 total) into my experience when I realized I no longer thought that over $300 for just me was too much $. I was flattened, and I felt like I’d been gut punched. I was in the same exact place there as you were hearing/watching this mastery, which is the audio version of three star Michelin dining for progressive metal. Tool as a band is in the same place as the best restaurants in the world. Many people don’t know about that kind of food, actual or audio, and are “satisfied” with blue box Mac and Cheese (pop?!)! Anyway, count yourself blessed man! I was after going to that meal, it changed my life, and my career... I was sooo complacent! It’s awesome when we can be inspired to the next level by the hard win talents of people who have been able to push past the norm to something special! An excellent reaction video sir, I echo everyone else, and you got my sub. I’d also love to hear what you think about Invincible!

Danny is an octopus God in a man's body. 2 things to note about this video are Danny's dynamic control and precision. Danny plays in tympani fashion the way he plays notes on his tuned drums. Every note is played exactly where he planned it and exactly as loud as he wanted it. Also, the part at 14:50 where you go back to marval at the polymetric section, is a 3/16 played over a 4/4 where the flat, hand switching triplet resolves back on the 1 after 3 phrases. THEN he begins introducing new elements of the kit into the rhythm until there are 5, before reducing them to 4, then 3, then 2. That build up is mathematically amazing. Being able to write and play something complicated that sounds ridiculous is one thing, but being able to write and play something so complicated that sounds so simple is on a whole other level. I love watching these reaction videos. You can usually tell by the thumbnail weather someone is going to watch this and think " that was cool, Danny is a badass" and have no idea what just happened, or weather they're going to be counting the whole time and still getting lost ending in absolute amazement at Danny, the octopus God.

I can't believe you actually called out the time signature of 33/16 on the first listen. The main riff is usually written as 5/8 + 7/4 + 7/4, which would be 33/8. That is impressive that you spotted the 33 so easily considering how unusual of a count it is.

On the other hand he counted the 4/4 part as being 19/16. But to be fair, counting Tool's time signatures at first listen is always a bit of a gamble. If I had to count the time signature for The Pot when I first heard it I'd never have guessed the whole beginning of the song till the second chorus was in 4/4.

I think Danny is tapping into other levels of consciusness, or better, unconsciusness. He spent his entire life practicing like 6/8 hours at day mastering rudiments and odd Times, that now all these things are part of his unconscious circuits of his brain. This is how, for example, kids learn to walk or speak. He is not controlling time anymore, he is just flowing in the river of time, and this is why he seems so relaxed and he can improvises fills around the time signature and orchestrations in the middle of electronic pads part. In fact the live versions are allways different from the studio's.

I'm Danny's age now, pushing 60, and I've been listening for decades, probably heard every song 10,000 times, and it *never* gets old, but the more *I* age, the better Tool sound and the more the message rings true. Which then took me into reactions and your video, it's great that Tool are finally opening a lot more eyes to their musical genius, the best reaction I've seen hands down. Definitely give this album a go it will just shine a light on every other they have put out, enjoy the journey 👍

I love seeing an accomplished drummer humbled by Danny, and I mean that in the best way possible. You're the ones that have a chance to follow in his footsteps, not the ones that think they can already pull it off. I love playing and I can't even air drum to his simplest stuff.

Great video brother. Im a happy subscriber now. 👍 I’m impressed that you identified the 33/16 time sig. You’re the only one I’ve seen that was able to pick up on it. It’s also impressing that you noticed how intricate his polymeter is during the instrumental. In the last section check out his right hand. All double strokes throughout the entire instrumental with the right hand is hard enough, but in the last section he goes from playing 5 drums with the right to 4, then 3, then 2 to create a walls are closing in/tightening/tension building affect, and then boom! Any and all drummers out there can learn a ton from that part alone. You CAN in fact create these types of moods with percussion. Also, he never plays to a click. It would foul them up! 😂 Great video!

I appreciate the honest assessment of the drum playing! I will clue you in on a recent interview with Maynard. He has said that he doesn’t write in 4/4, more in the 6/8 area, because he doesn’t breathe in a 4/4. He referenced Joni Mitchell because she didn’t write in 4/4. Tool sound is different because they are.

Danny has some very delicate and creative drumming, whenever I see his passion and creativity it leaves me nothing less but inspired and very calm inside. It's a bit meditative, trance like. He surely has a style that is very unique to him, I could listen to probably a lot of drummers blindly and I would hear out DC simply because of his unique drumming. Maybe you could call it DC'esque, he deserves it. There are really great drummers out there, he for sure can be considered one of them. You do not have to react, but I ask of you to watch two other drumcams: Triad and Lateralus (first one for this meditative experience and crazy creativity; later one for his absolutely mindboggling climax) Both these Drumcams are shit qualitywise, but that still is not able to ruin the experience watching him drum and learn from. Keep it up. And no worries if Tool has never been your thing, that's the thing with art, I never got much out of Mozart, yet I like Beethovens more "chaotic" pieces or Handel's baroque. Different strokes for different folks. I will mention however, that there does exist a handful of chaotic/dark pieces among Mozart's oeuvre -- of which inspired Beethoven -- that you might enjoy if you haven't heard them already.
@Spasstiful
@Spasstiful 3 года назад
@@olly8453 exactly, it's not even the prowess, they are all fantastic musical geniuses, but some just don't cling with you, you still respect it for the musicianship though. I'd never argue Beethoven is the better componist, just that I like his style more. ^^ I love Mozarts Requiem though.
@olly8453
@olly8453 3 года назад
@@Spasstiful Absolutely. Taste in Art is as diverse as there are individuals; it really comes down to what resonates with one personally. For me Mozart takes the cake -- very closely followed by Bach and Beethoven. Mozart was more restricted than Beethoven was during his lifetime, but even so Mozart was constantly pushing new ground, which paved the way for Beethoven to take music to where he ultimately did. Here's a couple of pieces you might not have heard from Mozart that are more "Beethovian" in their style: This is a prelude and fugue (the fugue has four independent melodies constantly interweaving though one another at once that a achieve a sort of chaotic fusion). Beethoven personally copied this work out by hand and studied it, as he did with many of Mozart's works. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NDKdrQgp_q0.html One of two "dark" outlier piano concerto Mozart wrote. Mozart hardily ever wrote works in a minor key, but when he did...he left an indelible mark. This piano concerto heavily inspired Beethoven. When Beethoven first heard this piece, at the end of it he remarked to his colleague: "we shall never be able to do anything like that." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mz-KGTZ0vrs.html Cheers!

@@olly8453 Thank you for the pieces, I am indeed not too experienced in pieces of Mozart as it requires a lot of work getting into the works of great componists. Just never really got into Mozart, and when I tried, I just couldn't really deal with it, so I stuck more to the old baroque componists which Bach of course is another great one even though I find myself listening to Handel more. Beethoven I can only really enjoy or not even consider to put it on. Pretty mooddependend. I will give your suggestions a look, for the sake of discovering that I am missing out something I would regret. 🙏

@@Spasstiful What composer/band I listen to very much depends on my mood as well; anything from Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Dvorak, Chopin, Shostakovich, or Tool :P -- as well as many more. Happy to share :) Hope you find something appealing out of it -- but if not! Tis all good as well. I know a lot of people who say they just can't get into Tool, but that doesn't stop me from trying every gateway angle possible to see if I can get them interested :P Even so, there are just some people that it just isn't their thing -- never hurts exploring though!

That was some good respect you gave Danny and the band there, it was a good watch. I get it with the "not a huge Tool fan" thing. They can be a bit tedious for me sometimes, but they do so many things really well, especially stylistically. I'll try to listen to an album and get a little bored, but then I'll go see them live and loose my s**t over em again. I dunno, but one things for sure, my drumming and songwriting style is laced with their influence

The thing is about trying to get Danny's timing down is that exactly in this song and many others you can't count the total beats. This because of his polyrhythm he is playing a 4/4 a 7/8 and a11/16 all at the same time. I'm not completely sure about those times but I do know that, that is why us fans call him the octopus.

I really appreciate your insights at the end, and it all sounds like it checks out. Tool isn't for everyone, but their music will lead you on an amazing journey, if it's something you like. I would definitely suggest finishing the Fear Inoculum album and then maybe try Lateralus, next. (A kind and friendly suggestion as a now long time Tool fan.)

It's interesting, I'm not really sure time signature *matters* to a Tool song. It's like instead of picking a time signature and fitting a verse into it, they write the verse they want to play and then fit time signatures around it. Like Justin wants to play this specific groove and that happens to be in 7/4 9/4 across 4 measures and Danny is just like "cool, I'll rock an alternating 6/8 4/3 until you're done" or something.

This is the best tutorial on the middle section of this song that I've seen. At the 8:28 mark he catches on something that I think most people miss about this part. Danny cycling through 5 drums, then 4, then 3 etc as a way to build tension for the upcoming dbl bass part. You feel the tension building but not necessarily know what is causing it. It's a great explanation of how he does this. It's a great tutorial on this section of the song. I think you'll enjoy it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8lYueg-s_7g.html
