In honor of J.D. Passing yesterday as of writing this, I thought we should do a song for him. And, I wanted to do a video so I could actually see him and see what he was all about. And, I am glad I did. This was a great presentation of him and what a voice he has. He co-wrote a bunch of hits for The Eagles and others as well. RIP J. D.

Thanks so much for this memorial to J.D Souther. What a beautiful voice, silenced too soon. Blessings all.

Yesterday my former brother-in-law was mourning J.D.’s passing. He said J.D. was one of his regular customers in the early ‘80’s when he was waiting tables at a restaurant in Amarillo, TX. J.D. always had six or seven people with him, including Waddy Wachtel. He said J.D. was just a beautiful human being.

Such a great loss to music. He was so instrumental to the success of The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, who he dated for awhile, Souther, Hillman & Furay. Early on he, and future Eagle, Glenn Frey formed a folk duo called Longbranch Pennywhistle. RIP JD. 🙏

RIP JD. As a songwriter he was more behind the scenes, Still I did buy The Souther Hillman Furay band LP back in the day primarily because I was familiar with Chris Hillman.

Lee, J.D Souther also did quite a bit of acting. He played Jesse James in the television movie Purgatory in 1999. He played Ted in the film Postcards from the Edge (1990). He also played the character John Dunaway in the third season of the television drama Thirtysomething. In 2012, he appeared in the mystery thriller Deadline. Souther had a recurring role in the first season of country music drama series Nashville, which premiered in October 2012. He reprised his role in a 2017 episode of the fifth season.

Lee, yes, J D co-wrote this Eagles songs, But he also was the sole writer on many other songs! One I suggest you react to is "White Rhythm And Blues"by Linda Ronstadt. (J.D later released it on his own album. It's a _great_ song!

I really love his song Faithless Love. There are a couple live versions of Linda Ronstadt singing it. Beautiful! He appeared in the movie Always and he sang a wonderful rendition of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. There are clips of that on youtube.

JD liked being the songwriter, and was then encouraged to finally do some stuff himself. I saw him 5 years ago at a club in Seattle (where he lived) and met him afterwards; he did a show rarely. A lot of his songs are what I'd term "beautiful sorrow". From "Faithless Love" country with Linda Ronstadt, to rock "Heartaches" with the Eagles, to the smokey-club jazz of his album "Tenderness"(2015) - Check out "Something In The Dark" from that album. It seems like every song of his I listen to I find myself thinking "another well-crafted song".

J.D. Souther - "Faithless Love" (1976) (Written by J.D Souther... Linda Ronstadt first recorded it in 1974 on her Heart Like A Wheel LP. And Glen Campbell released it as a single in 1984. (Glen's version reached #10 on Country Billboard charts)

Lee, you should react to J.D's acoustic version of "New Kid In Town" from his 2011 'Natural History' CD. It's an excellent rendition! Also, there's a 10 minute documentary of the making of that album with a few partial clips of his live in-studio recording of a few of the songs as well as short clips of interviews in between where he talks about the songs. A fantastic video!

JD used to write for the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt and they dated for a while but were life long friends. They did a couple of duets that you may want to check out.

The "nothing wrong with you, darling I get lonely too" passage is more Orbison than Orbison.

I had not heard J.D. had passed. This makes me so, so sad. He was a singer and performer, but his real God-given talent was writing songs. His songs propelled to stardom so many singers and bands. This would be a great rabbit hole for you to jump into - doing songs J.D. wrote/co-wrote. You will be surprised at how many hits he wrote. A wonderful song he did - a duet with James Taylor called Her Town Too. You can really hear his voice better and experience his talent in the live verson video. Check out who his backing band was - all top-notch studio and touring great musicians - especially Leland Sklar on bass - another musician you should jump down a rabbit hole for. It is amazing how many super-stars Leland worked and recorded with, as well as J.D. Leland also has his own RU-vid channel - musically delightful and at times really funny!

Take a listen to the studio. His voice is similar to Roy Orbison. He is among the singer songwriters that are my mood music. Listen to "Her Town Too." It's a duet with James Taylor on Taylor's album, "Daddy Loves His Work." Must listen. The two together are great. The vid common on the Tube, is a TV performance. They sound great, though pretty sure they are both stoned by the look in their eyes. Lots of great music out there being done today, possibly more than then, but not mainstreamed u fortunately.
