Here's an odd song: Tears for Fears, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. I think it might be in 6, very, very odd for pop. If you don't gave a solid lock on that high hat, the whole song falls apart...

Smith had the best chops in all of rock music yet never overplayed a Journey song. He always did what was best for a song. The drum track for "Don't Stop Believing" is one the best examples of minimal playing making a huge contribution to a song.

It's really not minimal playing. It requires immense technique and co-ordination skills as well as great internal tempo.

If you look up Stephem Taylor's lesson on how to play Don't Stop Believing you will find the drumming is very complex and hard to learn yet because of the consistent back beats it sounds simple.

Maybe you should have spent MORE time, listening to the record. "Drummers" seem to think that since THEIR parts aren't as "complex" as the lead guitarist, then "maybe" they can just "get by" by playing to the lowest common denominator and/or just do the "minimum" required. The above illustrates why there are actually LESS drummers like Steve Smith, and MORE drummers, who just "get by." Think about it.

Everybody talks about voice and keyboards but what makes this song if ever musically great is the interaction of the drums Steve wrote with the bass part Neal wrote.

The brilliance of how simply the melody he's playing with right hand, against the 4/4 feel, and how it so perfectly fits that song, is why Journey has about 20 or 30 tunes that will be listened to forever, and why Steve is regarded as a drumming god (sorry, but that word sorta fits; he's like really really good)

Hard to believe such a nerdy looking guy plays in a stadium rock band. Soft spoken, so unlike the rock heads ala Bobby Blotzer from the day. What makes this very good is not overplaying and maintaining a format. Smith's work on Frontiers is a rock masterpiece. Same compositional skills...and that's what we're talking here, composition.

The song itself is something that most drummers wouldn't admit to liking. When it was released, I was a senior in high school. After hearing it a few times, I realized there was something really cool going on with the drums, but most of my butt rock buddies would laugh at me, until I told them "listen to the drums, really listen." It is really hard to play, and it sounds awesome. I never got a chance to see how he did it. Even the MTV live video only showed him for a few seconds at a time. I'm really glad to find this. Clears up a lot of questions.

Sometimes, I don't even realize how weird/creative a drum part is until I have to play it in a band. Like this song, or "The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy. When I had to play them live, I was like "Oh shit! There's more going on in the drums than I realized!" But then, for some odd reason, the opposite can be true too. Like recently, I had to learn Deep Purple's Burn I was practicing it on my practice pad drum set, and I was like "Oh shit! I'm not gonna be able to do this! But as soon as I actually got on my real kit, I was like...ahhhhh ok." lol Sorry if I'm babbling lol

I played drums in a Journey Tribute Band for a few years. I also sang background vocals. Learning to play this song, groove with it, play left handed on the hats, right hand doing the drum work and cymbal pings off the bell of the ride was tough enough to learn. I did though and still love playing this song. I also had to sing while playing these drum parts. Lol! Was able to get it down. Fun time learning to do it and playing it.

Precisely why you have to listen to a track over and over and over, not only for the drums but for the interaction BETWEEN the drums and the band. You have to be aware of what YOU are doing and what everyone else is doing, in order to get the complete "musical picture."

Steve Smith is an awesome musician, at the end of the day its about coming up with the proper parts for a song without over playing, its about making good music as a band, and what he did on drums for this song is simply genius in my opinion, totally thinking outside of the box, I just love it.

Back the late 80s-early 90s, when playing for my church, I fitted this drum part into a song that we were playing. After 2-3x, noticed that the congregation was bobbing their heads, clapping their hands AND "grooving" to the song! You haven't LIVED/WORSHIPPED until you've seen a church congregation come ALIVE while SINGING, DANCING(in their seats) & WORSHIPPING to an Praise & Worship song structured around an SECULAR drum groove!-LOL. For the life of me, I CANNOT remember what that song was but I just PRAISE/THANK the Lord for blessing the performing arts with such an INCREDIBLY INSPIRATIONAL human such as Steve Smith! Steve, you will NEVER know how much your music has been a guide beacon to me! When EVER I hear this song, it brings back a TORRENT of fond memories!

This is so tasteful and expertly delivered, so many punk ass drummers still can't play this tune properly. I bet there are a TON of double-bass-loving, metal thrashing drummers that can't even begin to figure this type of drum style out, not to mention, write such an original part like this. Sure, a lot of people might be able to play it, but he's the one who WROTE it. No one plays drums like this in rock anymore. He's just like Stewart Copeland, serving the song, while exploring amazing grooves and intricacies that only musicians pick up on.

What a legendary drummer! I really admire these 70s and 80s rock/pop drummers that were unique and creative, played for the song, and wrote very tasteful parts. Steve Smith is the perfect example of this. I also really dig Liberty DeVitto’s (Billy Joel) drumming. Everything he wrote fit those songs so perfectly. I used to be drawn to more flashy drummers, but as I get older and more experienced, it’s drummers like this that truly inspire me.

I always loved the drums in that song, as well as several Journey songs and thought that drummer had the tastiest fills of anyone I've heard, along with Joe Patalie playing with Joe Walsh. I think most people that never played drums would miss just how great these fills are and for me, really make the song over the top great. YT is wonderful because I now get to see this great drummer not only play but explain and show how he came up with his stuff. I wish we had YT when I was growing up, then again, no, I don't. When I see most kids these days that grew up with computers in their life, I'm really happy to have been doing everything I was doing instead of watching others on a screen. I probably would never have played drums at all with a computer taking up my time.

It's interesting to see how he's changed his whole position behind the kit. He went from sitting low with drums and cymbals up high to more of a jazz posture - sitting much higher and above the instrument. That's a real indication of just how different it feels to play rock and jazz.

This is an amazing creation by Steve and as such I believe he deserves part of the writing credits, Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon did and not him and the drums drive this song, they are a huge part of it, drummers get short changed all the time, Ginger Baker made the 5/4 bolero intro for White Room and recreated the entire song and got no credit or royalties, it's amazing and sad how drummers get very little credit for the creating and additions they invent that add so much to songs.
@a.barnard3205
@a.barnard3205 5 лет назад
Ginger Baker was part of the band and receives royalties to this day from his contributions to such. If ANY drummer were to feel "shortchanged" writing credits or no, then drummers wouldn't be hanging around with the same band for too long, would they. This is also another good lesson for up and coming drummers-learn ANOTHER instrument BESIDES the drums and learn how to write songs. Jonathan Cain STILL splits his share of royalties with ONLY the publishing company 50/50 and ONLY him, because he wrote FAITHFULLY all by himself. Tours are where the BIG MONEY is made though, where even a pauper can turn into a millionaire after ONE headlining tour.

That's simply awesome. If you know what to do, you can practice on a 500-bucks-set, all I need is a standard drumset and a standard cymbalset, not 15 toms, 2 chinas in different sizes... And it sounds just incredible! Love this guy!

WOW...has his set-up changed today! Ergonomically challenged here...today, no raising his sticks above his head! I do miss the 1981 SS tho from Journey...

It's called "getting older" but ONLY if you FEEL older.

Okay, how do you get the snare to sound that snappy and tight? It's not pitched tightened high either.

Experience. And how can YOU tell that it's NOT pitch-tightened, which is basically the ONLY way you can get a snare drum, to SOUND like that....

Does anyone know a version where this sample is playing throughout the whole song, starting from the very beginning? I heard a version at a lakers game, and It kicked ass. was wondering if anyone knew where I can find it
