Drunken Master 2 (1994) -🤯📼First Time Film Club📼🤯 - First Time Watching/Movie Reaction & Review 

OK, so it isn't 'real' in that the people aren't genuinely trying to hurt each other, but seeing a fight that is done for real, with no fast cuts or cheating camera angles, is always amazing. The choreographers and stunt performances are straight up astonishing - the speed, flexibility, inventiveness and flow from one idea to another are immaculate. You can only get a fight like this when everyone involved is top-tier level in their field.

This is one of the greatest martial arts films ever made, a true classic and maybe Jackie's best film, the fight choreography is on a whole other level.

I'm not used to this Dub, I've always watched the one that Jackie dubbed himself ^,^ Guess that was a later dub ?

Don't know if you guys noticed, but Jackie still incorporated the Eight Drunken Immortals technique in his choreography. Which is why sometimes he acts like a flirtatious woman, a cripple, a flute player, etc... The original Cantonese/Mandarin dialogue mentions them. This movie was in competition w/ (and won against) Jet Li's Fist of Legend for Best Action Choreography in the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards, which was choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, the director of the first Drunken Master. Looks like you guys watched a non-American English dub b/c Jackie voiced himself in The Legend of Drunken Master.

I remember when I first saw this movie back when it first came out, and I saw that fight scene between Jackie Chan and Ken Lo ("John"), my jaw dropped to the floor. I mean dude was pretty much boxing with his feet. I'd never seen anyone fight with their feet that good before that! It was one of the best fight scenes ever choreographed, executed and filmed. Like y'all said, too bad you had to cut the scene up because of worrying about your video getting claimed.

Back in the mid-1990s when Jackie's earlier films were getting theatrically released here in the states, he wanted Drunken Master II to be the first and not "Rumble in The Bronx". All because Drunken Master II was making so much noise overseas and was a huge milestone for Jackie's career. Doing a sequel (standaone or not) to one of his first hit films was unprecedented. I heard it was quite success and somehow they would bring it to the states. Dimension Films released it as 'The Legend of Drunken Master' (2000). It was the 7th and last of his earlier films to be released theatrically in the U.S. All 7 films had been re-dubbed with different voices and Jackie made sure his own voice was heard. The phenomenon of this is that JC played Fei Hung without missing a single step. At the time, he was doing more modern-set films. Even if it was 16 years since the original, Jackie treated the sequel like he just made DM1 yesterday. But going back to something traditional and keeping that way was truly artistic. The action, humor and dialogue has to move so fast. Seems simple, but it takes (even for Jackie) lots of effort to make these movies. He considered DM2 his best work for that time and the fans/critics could definitely oblige. From the film to the outtakes (especially these), this is why JC is the world's greatest action star.

Ken Long, Jackie's bodyguard was Frick ing awesome in those fights.

The American dub of this is criminal. This is one of the best kung fu movies ever made. It seems goofy with the dub, but if you watch the original with native language for the songs, and intonations with subtitles, seriously, one of my top ten movies from the last 50 years. I paid 130 bucks for my laser disc copy when I was a Burger King manager making $4.35 an hour.

On another note, I can't believe Emily missed the opportunity for a joke during the restaurant fight scene about how Jackie Chan had those guys "bamboo-zled"! 😊

80's/90's Hong Kong Action movies where just the best.

One of the greatest movies ever! Anita Mui is one of the best actresses of all time and her best performance in this film. RIP!

Just a few additional notes that you folks might enjoy: Regarding the cast, this movie contains some very notable cast members. Chief amongst them, has to be Master Lau Kar Leung. Who, not only portrayed the role of the old patriot that Jackie fought on the train, but was also the original director of the film. It can NOT be overstated how important he was to the formation and continued growth of the martial arts genre of films. He was a legendary choreographer, and eventual director. Working mostly for Shaw Brothers, but some Golden Harvest as well. He was a direct descendant of the legendary Wong Fei Hung's lineage of martial arts, andalso performed in some of the best fight scenes ever put to film. A few others notable actors in this, Ti Lung portrayed Jackie's father, and was actually a big name martial arts film star himself, again, mostly for Shaw Brothers. His filmography is phenomenal. The villainous guy in the black suit who assists in the end fight, is a guy named Ho-Sung Pak, who's most famous for being the live action actor for Lui Kang in the original Mortal Kombat games. He was actually brought onto the film to play the lead bad guy, but although a very respected martial artist, he had some difficulty adjusting to the Hong Kong style of action, and kept having injuries, and so was given a lesser role. The final actor to bring up, is Ken Lo. Who played Jackie's main opponent in the final fight. As you folks stated, he had a background in Tae Kwon Do, but he was also a Muay Thai kickboxing champ. The guy was super legit. He only retired because he eventually ran out of viable opponents in China. After leaving the fight stuff behind, he was introduced to Jackie by a mutual friend at a nightclub. Jackie was impressed with his credentials, and actually hired him to be his bodyguard and trainer. As his bodyguard though, he'd have to accompany Jackie to set, and then mostly stood around all day. So Jackie suggested he take up acting as well, since he was already there. Only problem was, he was used to punching and kicking people for real, and so was initially very unpopular amongst the stunt people and other actors. Eventually he taught himself how to have more control, and had a long career. The other thing to bring up, is regarding the falling out between Jackie and Master Lau Kar Leung as director. By this point, both were legends in the industry, and then working together was very much a holy shit moment. Unfortunately they ended up crashing quite a bit. Jackie knew what he wanted, and Master Lau knew what he wanted. I've always heard that the final straw came about with the final fight scene. Supposedly Master Lau wanted Jackie to fight a large number of opponents instead of the more one-on-one style that we got. Jackie felt differently, and wanted the big standoff, and by that point, enough was enough for Master Lau. It's genuinely a shame that they couldn't come together and collaborate more harmoniously, since they're both such incredible individuals with legendary careers. Though I believe they did eventually mend things years later.

If you enjoy fight scenes in cramped places, I have to recommend the Shaw Brothers classic, Martial Club. The end fight the alleyway is genuinely one of the best in cinematic history.

LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I'm so glad (and totally not surprised) that this won the pole. I stand with Matthew. That final fight is, IMO, one of the top, if not THE top, fight scenes ever filmed. The only one that even comes close is the rooftop fight in Who Am I?

Drunken Master 2 is a 10 out of 10 in terms of it's fight scenes. Jackie was already way past his prime when he did this movie(I remember he said during a local interview when he visited my country of Malaysia, he need assistance of wires to help him for some of the kicks and his joint issues he had waking up each morning) and he still managed to impress everyone with his incredible skills. You two should also check out the 2004 New Police Story( or any of the previous Police Story if you haven't yet), Rob-B-Hood, Wheels on Meals( featuring one of the Jackie best fight scenes in history against Benny the Jet), Armor of God 2 Operation Condor(Hong Kong version and not the chronologically confused U.S version) and Dragons Forever.

Two weeks ago, WatchMojo ranked this movie's concluding fight as #1 best Jackie Chan fight scene.

Don't know if you guys recognize the fiddle player here 16:37, but he was the Hong Kong cab driver (William Wai-Lun Duen) in Rush Hour 2 that Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) hailed to follow Ricky Tan. Remember? When he pretended not to speak any English until Carter gave him money, then he said in English, "Now you're speaking my language"? LOL.

Anita Mui, step mom Ling, always a delight and a riot. She was like the Madonna of the East as big time Cantonese pop artist. While she did do dramatic roles to great success, it was in the few projects she did with Jackie, Drunker Master 2, Miracles and Rumble In The Bronx, that she let out her funny side. RIP

If you enjoyed this comical action type you must see Jet Li’s The Legend and The Legend 2 is a complete story. I immediately watched the sequel in the early morning after it came on the VHS after the first ended. I was so happy.

I’m glad that he tried to do what directors/producers wanted him to do in the beginning of his career when they were really struggling to fill the “post-Bruce Lee-death-void”, but I’m even more excited that he decided to start making movies that were more in his element, as they never get old.

I absolutely love both Jackie Chan and Anita Miu. Both have incredible chemistry.

Back in 1997 I special ordered this on VHS from a Blockbuster Video (didn't even know that was possible). Came in a clamshell box. It was in Cantonese with really hard to read subs... felt like I had found some kind of Indiana Jones treasure.

That moment when Matthew gets prepped for the final fight sequence. :) Also, definitely in my top 5 if not top 1 of all time. I'd say my favorite Jackie films are this, Operation Condor, Who Am I?, Rumble in the Bronx, and Police Story.

Horrific dub (for example: "self-administered massage" is "nursing a hangover" in the original version), one of the best martial arts flicks in existence. Please for the love of all things holy, if you continue doing martial arts films you should always opt for the original language versions because they give you the emotional impact of the performances _so much_ better.

Next should be Police Story (1985) or Project A (1983) IMO. Bonus: Miracles (1989), Jackie's best-looking film IMO. Please try to find the original cantonese versions if you can. I know it's not always easy. Other martial art recommendations: - SPL (2005). Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen, Jackie Wu. The film is known in the US as "Killzone". - Iron Monkey (1993). Donnie Yen, directed by Yuen Woo-Ping. Try to avoid the butchered US version if you can.

I have seen this movie about 10-20 times, still one of my favourite Jackie Chan movies.

If you want some more Jackie movies to check out, I'd recommend watching "Rumble in the Bronx" (1995/1996 - Jackie's first film to have a mainstream release in the US), "Mr. Nice Guy" (1997/1998 - Jackie's first film to be scripted and shot in English), and "Who Am I?" (1998 - really good rooftop fight scene).

I've seen this movie numerous times with dub... never heard this version before... yes, criminal...

so, i remember seeing this movie, but it had Jackie Chan voicing himself in english.....it was one of the funniest things i remember seeing. That first drunken fight in the courtyard, i remember Jackie was naming all his moves as he was using them, just like an anime or Naruto.....i remember "wheel barrow", "down the hatch", "snake eyes", i think there was a corkscrew, where he spins in mid air, headbutting the opponent, "drunken maiden flirting with the master", "uncle stirs the wine" i think.....his stepmother was hilarious this was one of the first Asian martial arts movies i remember renting (yes Blockbuster), many followed.....Once Upon a Time in China series, Iron Monkey, Ong Bak, Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle....i even remember seeing alot of Asian movies (not just Martial Arts movies) were shown on Friday and Saturday night, translated to French (and i don't understand French, it was just on the Quebec channel that was apart of Canadian tv in the 90s and 2000s, i think that was how i first saw Ran, Kagemusha, and The Bride with White Hair....it was strange watching movies where both the spoken language and subtitled language aren't what you speak, yet the movies are interesting and compeling

That last scene before the end credits was cut out of the American release. Understandable, quite frankly.

One of the reasons it took along time to film(supposedly) is the way Jackie got his face to turn red, which he got by standing on his head before each take…..agree with Matt with the final scene being top 5…maybe top 3

Jackie Chan is a great entertainer, talented martial artist, and does many impressive stunts... but just for clarity's sake he doesn't do "all his own stunts" despite his claims to the contrary. He has a whole stunt team and doubles he uses for most of the super dangerous stuff. That's all I'm going to say, but that I don't think that knowledge ruins any of his movies. Always fun to watch your reactions on this channel, thank you!

Jackie Chan’s “Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin”.. May be his best movie. Fights scenes almost nonstop with NO JOKING.. just a serious, kick ass movie.

The director Lau Kar Leung (who directs - except the finale - and plays the old master here) is the best martial arts artist / director / choreographer ever in HK cinema history, check all his directed - movies between 1975 and 1983 !...

This is definitely a different version than the one I saw. Jackie did his own dubbing in the version I saw.

it was great to see Lau Kar-Leung in a movie with Jackie, it's just a shame they didn't get along. Lau was such a good actor and amazing Martial Artist, and is in Heroes Of The East which to me is one of the best Kung-Fu movies ever made (also in The Scorpion King/Operation Scorpio which was just a very fun movie).

I didn't get to this one until much later in my Jackie journey, so it doesn't have quite the ranking in my faves that it provably should 😅 Operation Condor and Who Am I are still my favorites of Jackie's work, but the final fight here is incredible and I love the philosophy of 'A boat floats in water, but also sinks in it'

I have a region zero DVD that I got a while ago. I bought it 2nd hand in person, so I'm not 100% sure if it's a bootleg or not. It's Jackie Chan and his stunt crew doing certain stunts, like the box crashes and wire work. It has Jackie speaking in English as well as his native Chinese, with English subtitles. It's worth tracking down.

The original had somewhat of a depressing ending. Apparently, the industrial alcohol (used to start fires) messed him up permanently. The Axe Gang, in Kung Fu Hustle had a few inspirations. You might see some similarities, if you watch "Gangs of New York". I always enjoy Jackie Chan movies. I like that even though they get intense, they still have lighthearted and comedic elements, without becoming completely farcical, like "Kung Pow". You can generally be assured, when you watch Jackie Chan, from the last century, that it's not going to be a depressing drama. I highly suggest you continue following his work. The Hong Kong stuff is the best, to me, though Rush Hour was great. You might also like to check out more of Stephen Chow stuff, if you can find it. You might like "Flirting Scholar". Of course, one of my favorites is the "God of Gamblers" series. You might look up "All for the Winner". There are plenty more JC films to enjoy. Keep going.

It's a hard to pick a favorite Jackie film for me. Is it this one or Project A, Dragons Forever? Now I'm curious if Matthew saw any of the Shaw Brothers films. King Hu made many great martial arts movies that are worth checking out that have only become available in the West in the past decade. A Touch if Zen, Dragon Inn, Cone Drink with Me. Most of his filmography is actually worth seeing.
