I learned something new this week..I've never heard of dry canning..have watched several videos now..fascinating..now I wish i had saved all my sauce jars from the store..I was always told you couldn't reuse them that way and once a lid has been used you can't reuse that either..at 68 it goes to show you're never too old to learn..thanks everyone..as always prayers and blessings
I an still using jars from my Mother and Grandmother, Old Miracle Whip jars, old glass coffee cans and others that I cherish because we can no longer get these jars and they are part of my family history. I am 65 yrs old so imagine how old some of these jars are.
Funny how people can't figure out that the jars were pressure canned at the factory in the first place. Even ball lids are reusable if you don't deform them while opening. I mean the box even says "reusable".
I've been wondering for years if you could reuse jars from the grocery store I am so glad you made this video you have to take a lot of questions out of candy I never can before but it's nice to know you can recycle your jars and that way you don't have to spend a fortune in case if things don't go right
I finally tried it too. Some are absolutely wonderful some not so good, but great for dry storage with a desiccant pack. ( Amazon, 100 for about 8 bucks). Never throw away, always a use for them💖
Wonderful idea! When I cook fresh carrots I never put water in the pot. Low and slow and everyone loves them. Just a small amount of honey and a squeeze of lemon. 😁
This is my first time on your channel. I've been canning since I was a child helping my mom. I'm 65 years old. Dry canning is new to me. I'm fascinated by this! I'm going to try this in the fall. I'm planning the largest garden of my life and I learned to garden from my dad. Again I've had a garden pretty much all my life. I'm very happy that I found your channel. I hope that you have been able to find jars.
@@charmc4152 I saw several videos on dry canning. One with potatoes and they used just a little bit of butter and seasoning. It interested me because I had never heard of it before. I certainly don't want to risk botulism though. They used a pressure canner and there was a seal. If there's a vacuum in the jar, how can anything grow? I'm trying to get information from you because you sound like you know what you're talking about. Can you please explain to me how botulism can grow in a sealed mason jar? It sounds like I am lacking some critical information. Thank you for your insight.
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing your technique. I canned up a batch, had one jar that failed to seal so we ate them right away. We have never enjoyed cooked carrots so much! I've shared your technique with friends and they are impressed with the flavor as well. Thanks again!
Haaa you are so correct everyone does it differently this is the great thing and why I appreciate you making this video and some things that work for some, many not work for others and different methods is how we learn threw what works best for each individual. And what I’ve come to realize sadly I lost my mother and dad when I was but a young girl of only 18 I did picked up a few things well she was still on this earthly plain but I’m now 57 and life is very different in May 2022 and a changing world and a lot of uncertainty for the future so I am learning everything I can to help my family and grandchildren and pass on what I’ve learnt so never think your knowledge and skills are not appreciated because I appreciate you and thankyou soooo much blessings from 🇨🇦Calgary, Canada.
Hi April thank you for your kind words and I am sorry you lost your parents at a young age, yes our world is changing and I agree that these skills should be learned and passed on, Blessings to you and your family
Thank you for the information. I´m getting my pressure canner on sunday, but I can only get lug jars, and was looking for information on how much to tighetn the lids. Your video will help me a lot.
Thank you. I have been canning for a year so just stockpiling yet. So I am going to take off all the rings. I was leaving them on although I was testing the seal by taking off the rings and lifting them by the lids after they cooled. I think it makes sense to take off the rings. Appreciate your help.
I LOVE YOU!!! I’ve had a pressure canner for 3 years and been petrified to use it. I have a garden and an about to pull the remnants from my garden …carrots to be precise! It’s time I try the canner I told my husband and hello google find me a video to can my carrots and use my pressure cooker!!! You gave me confidence and I’m going to just do it…because of how simple you make it sound. Also I too wonder about recycling good jars for canning. I hot water bath can so just new to pressure canning. Sorry for the novel. Lol. I’m just super happy I found you. I’m now subscribed and clicked on the bell. Thank You!!!!.
Thanks for the great idea with the carrots- I am definitely canning my carrots like this the next time I can carrots. Already dry packing potatoes. I learned several years ago about reusing tempered jars and their lids as I have an ex-Amish friend who told me she'd grown up doing this and still does. I've had friends saving and passing on jars to me so I will have them on hand.
Gosh, I've never heard of dry canning veg, but it makes sense. Ball jars have gone up in price here in the US, as well...but at least we can still get them.
I’m even more of a rebel canner, I’m from the U.K. and to buy a American canner is expensive and the postage nearly as much so I use a pressure cooker same type of thing but a lot smaller.
CANNING POLICE !!! Loved it. No Salt No Spice JUST CARROTS So simple I would never have thought of this.. Thank you so much. I had several German Shepherds at one time and my hometown locker often had more meat scraps than I could use for muttley food. (I never feed them straight scraps but blend their dry dog food with cooked or canned meat scraps) I pressure canned several or more quarts at a time and reuse the medium flats or re-use the lug lids like you do. Have an occasional seal fail but I notice it and feed it out. (I ALWAYS use a red marker to date and label the jars for muttley food) Have some 11 years old with no problems . To much fat or to hot(High pressure) will let liquid out of the jar and compromise a seal. That will be obvious within 24 hrs. Common sense is what your video contains. Another thanks for this video.
I don't remember my folks ever buying new canning lids. I do remember getting in trouble for damaging the lids when opening the jar. We left the rings on to protect the lid in the storm cellar where we kept all the canned jars.
@@Jesusiscoming24 Michael they will last for years as long as you still have a seal, I tend to use them within 12-18mths but at 3 yrs still good. Some food has lasted much longer than that.
🇿🇦dear miss I from suif Africa 🇿🇦 thanks for your videos 👍 I raell have to to get prepared for hot days ahead I'm close to 60j so this is 1way to get value for your money.vincent 🇿🇦
Just found you. I love the "canning police" comment. I also dry can and, oh my gosh, reuse commercial jars with button lids. Guess I'm just a rebel canner like you. Subscribed!
Love it! Planted carrots in the garden this year, hope to dry can them. Can this be done for onions, beans, tomatoes? I'm new to canning, only done hot packing for meat so far.
I have a video called Onion Jam its delicious I have canned tomatoes on their own, yes for beans but I do use broth or water sometimes as my husband like the look of them better
Down to earth and straight forward. Are they still crunchy when dry canned? I havent done any pressure canning yet and looking forward to it. A lot of experimenting to do to narrow down to a favourite. 👍
I absolutely believe there is more then one way to do things. This said , I recommend all new cannes to learn how to properly can then when you have a few years experience you can try newer or unapproved methods. I am a rebel canner but you must understand what your doing first. Get started and do it. You will love the results.
Thanks for this video. I have been canning for 35 years and I’ve never heard of dry canning before. Can you explain to me the benefit of doing it this way I’m very curious. Thank you
Hi Donna some people say that the carrots are firmer when you dry can them but I dont think there is much difference. Its a personal choice I have canned them both ways my husband doesnt like the look of them dry canned.
I've bought some lug lids and I'm canning soon. I'm interested. Why do we squeeze them tighter than normal? In the UK where I'm from we're told it to. You've got me questioning now.
I have handy pint jars a problem I've come to is I can't figure out how to keep the jars from bobbing for lack of liquid will you sure you're tricks to prevent bobbing
more often than not? The store jars and lids are much better quality than what we use as home canners! Think about it? They have to be a high standard for transportation and distribution!
I've recently started canning and preserving with recycled jars but I've been reading EVERYWHERE that you're "not allowed" to reuse lids? I assumed that had to be incorrect because I'm sure our relatives didn't have an abundance of metal sealing lids to throw out and replace every time? I get it if the lid is damaged or dented but not if it's in perfect condition still
Hi when you hear the pop you can see the indent in the middle of the jar. You can press on the indent the next day after they are cooled and as long as it is down it is sealed. If you press on it and it pops or springs back it is not sealed. Hope this helps thanks for watching.
do these carrots hold their bright color after a few months? I have canned carrots in water and they turn kind of brown as time goes on. Still taste great, and great for soups. I would love to try this
Have you tried silicone gaskets inside your lids? Mine have lost their seal, and I am wondering if it’s better to buy replacement lids or just gaskets.
Hi Tessa, also my first time here and I'm fascinated by your method. And your jars look so beautiful. Well done. I'm just thinking here, would you say one could dry can soft fruits such as peaches and pears? Thank you. ♥️💮
Hi I havent tried to dry can peaches or pears as I like the light syrup I make but I have just put nectarines in jars with no liquid and it worked out fine. Thanks for watching
@@tessearle4828 Hi Tessa, I also like a light syrup, but always looking to cut the sugar with more acidic types of fruit, so, that's great, thank you. I'll definitely try the nectarines👍🤗❤️🙏
Hi Jane Truscott The reason some people dry can is that they say the carrots are a bit firmer, but to be honest I dont think there is much differnce but I still do they both ways Thanks for watching
@@gpashh The USDA is always going to be overly cautious when they recommend canning because they know alot of people might not do it correctly. My family has been canning for years. Heck I recall eating 10 year old canned green beans and they were just as good as the day they were canned.
@@jimbox114 true Jim, but people in other countries mostly WB and don't even have PCs. Our USDA needs an update. I can milk, ghee, cheese, cream cheese etc..all the no nos.
Hello, I watched you video with great interest. I was wondering if this is a family recipe or was this in a canning book? Thank you for sharing what ever information you have.
Melba its not a family recipe or in a canning book but I have canned them this way for years and are fine, my husband prefers that I add water or stock as it looks better so I do can them both ways.
I typically dehydrate my carrots but I'd like to try your method here. Also, do you know if this recipe would work using persimmons? Thank you very much. 😊
I did not understand what kind of jars these are. Please explain again what kind of jars these are. I would love to try this. My family loves home canned carrots.
I don't have a pressure pot.. Can this be done by covering the jars in water to boil for 10 mins? Thank you for i never knew one could do dry canning at all. Great video. :)
No. Carrots are a low acid food. They will need to be pressure canned in a pressure canner. Only high acid foods can be water bathed. Please look up the proper procedure for canning vegetables so you don't risk botulism.
No you can’t dry can carrots or water bath them either. Carrots are not acidic so they must be pressured. Water bathing is for acidic things like apple sauce, peaches, cherries, etc. Tomato’s can also be water bathed with the addition of a bit of lemon juice.
Thank you so much. I thought you had to add water. Now I am going to do it this way. I love those jars. How do you find recycled jars? Or did you keep them from something you bought?
I see this video is from a year ago so I hope you still answer 😉 My question is...... I've never dry canned, was wondering if your vegetables change color over time while sitting on the shelf?
