I've changed my process on final sanding and buffing stages and this has been a game changer. No more wet sanding for me. This whole process works out better than ever. This is just another venture into making the process of building a guitar better, easier and bringing the quality out to it's max potential. Check it out.

Thank you for the great video and advise you suggested to me from another video of yours that led me here and yes you are ansolutely right. After finding eagle abrasives/Kovax who and why would anyone ever wet sand again. Their product is great. It is absolutely superior quality and works amazing. And it really is not that expensive if you factor in the amount you get per box. If you were to purhase and other p rated paper it would be relatively the same. Plus they make starter kits that come with the sandpaper, flat thin pad and the foam sanding block for cheaper than if you bought it all separately. Thank you again. If it was not for your video I do not know if I would have found them. So glad I did. Definitly a changer.

Been using super assilex for about a year. Nothing else comes close to it. I use the super bufflex as well. Up to 3000. Then take it to the buffer. And it polishes right up in no time. Also, if you burnish the surface after each grit, it actually seems to make the foggy appearance from sanding disappear and makes the next grit able to remove scratches from the previous grit better. If that makes sense. I discovered this on accident one day. I noticed if I rubbed the powder away and used a little pressure, it shined up and I almost couldn’t even see any sanding marks using1200. When you’re up to 3k doing this it’s already so shiny you could use liquid polish and a rag to bring up the gloss. Good for those without buffers.

Yeah, I plan on going up in grits like that myself on the next batch of guitars. I'll have to check out the burnishing technique as well. Do you have pics of your work? You can find mine here: www.lesperanceguitars.com. Thanks for the comment.

I wet sanded a flying V I refinished, and eventually cracks started happening. First were the holes for the pickguard, secondly in other areas. They were minor, nevertheless they were visible.

When I drill for pickup rings, pickgaurd screws, strap buttons, ect., I always drill them after buffing and camfer them with a camfering bit. That way the screws threads never touch the finish on the edges of the holes. This keeps the cracks away. Thanks for watching!

I just used the 600 grit Super Assilex to sand back some simtec easy sanding sealer before shooting a color and a fad. Powered up just like your finish did. I'm very happy to have found this product. Good video brother.

Thanks! The sandpaper technology has come a long way. Hopefully you'll use the finer grits on the topcoat. I'm very impressed with my results!

@@lesperanceguitars8381 yes I bought the start up kit. Right off the top of my head I think it goes up to 3000. Gut the half sheet block and two cushion pads with it. I derailed myself with water based and uv cure for a few jobs. Don't waste your time. Terrible products too with.

@@lesperanceguitars8381, don’t even bother. I two years trying to make it work well. It’s just a huge pain and I’ve not been happy with the results yet. I mean it works but it took me a long time to get decent results. But I just switched back to 2k urethane and had great results with half the effort.

Dude, I just learned this lesson the hard way recently. My last guitar I sprayed with nitrocellulose lacquer, a nice sunburst. I wet sanded and small cracks appeared in the finish at every pickup ring screw hole, the two bridge post holes, and all four of the holes for mounting the neck. I'll never wet sand again! I have heard that using naphtha instead of water is a good solution, but I have some fear for how the naphtha will react to the lacquer. This Super Assilex you are recommending looks like a great solution, I just wish it was more affordable. I'll give it a try.

It's pricy, but lasts a long time. I'll never wet sand again. No more water getting under the finish. Glad I could help. Like, Subscribe and share my videos. Thanks for watching!

It is really not that expensive on Amazon. They sell smaller and starter packs as well. If you were to by the same amount of 3m or something like that it would be around the same. Plus it is well worth it how it works and no risk of damaging your work or guitar.

Hi Paul, did you dye this green body then clear coat? On the back you painted it black,do you level sand the black paint before spraying the clear coat then level sand again?
@lesperanceguitars8381
@lesperanceguitars8381 3 дня назад
@mauricelavergne3434 I stained the green, coated the body with sanding sealer, sanded level, sprayed black on the back and clearcoated.

what was the rubber thing you used as a block? Great video, was about to try the wet sanding of a guitar I just built and wasn't looking forward to that. This is perfect. Don't have buffing wheels yet. Can a car buffer work for now? Thanks

I think it is called Starboard. This material is used in the boating industry. Basically, a piece of plastic. It won't warp when wet using it as a wet sanding block. I just glued a 1/8" piece of high density foam to it. A hardwood block would work well for this dry sanding process. As far as buffing, whatever you have to buff with should be fine. Good luck!

What type of finish are you using? How long do you leave it cure before you level sand it?
@lesperanceguitars8381
@lesperanceguitars8381 3 дня назад
@mauricelavergne3434 I used Prestic 27x1 and x2 urethane and catalyst from Simtec coatings. Wait a week or 2 then sand and buff. Thanks for watching!

Can a guitar with a flame maple top painted with a transparent paint be sanded off and recleared for a nice natural wood color
@lesperanceguitars8381
@lesperanceguitars8381 2 года назад
There are things that can prevent you from achieving this. Was the top stained, then a transparent finish put on it or just a transparent coat? If just transparent, shouldn't be a problem. If stained, how deep did the stain soak in? How thick of a top do you have to work with? Some tops are thin veneers with a bursted edge to hide the wood transition. You risk a chance of sanding through the veneer trying to get the stain removed. Thickness of top and how the color was applied matters. I hope this helps you. Thanks for watching!
