Built up a discrete, stripped down version of the Lightspeed without the second opamp stage on the breadboard yesterday. Good lord, what an amazing sounding circuit. Once I get it tweaked, I'm gonna do up the Southland and stick them in one enclosure.
+Nicholas Caldwell they sure do, you also need to be able bench 120 and build and aquatic mode of transport with nothing but twigs and a packet of fruit pastels ;)
What a brilliant weekend, at the UK Guitar Show. Spotted Pete Honore, Chris Buck and Bernie Marsden, a session from Martin Simpson , fabulous gear all over, all topped off with an absolute ball buster of a session from you guys. Sensational. Then went back to brother's house in Palmers Green, dug out my tablet and ordered a D & M Drive at last. Tuesday afternoon, back home to South Shields.Arrived at 5.00 to find my D & M Drive waiting...Blimey!! Unpacked cases, logged on to TPS and found an episode of Pick and Mix featuring my favorite effect sounds, drive and vibe. Happy trails and thanks a million fellers!!
You guys need to test stacking the Light Speed and the Southland together. Apparently, Nick Greer specifically designed them with stacking one another in mind. Supposedly they produce a lot of harmonics and other good stuff when stacked. Haven't tested it myself, but I love my Light Speed. Most likely gonna pick up the Southland in the near future thanks to y'all two killers! Cheers
The Lightspeed and Southland are both made to stack together and with other pedals. There are some artists that use the Lightspeed as a boost in line with another Lightspeed, set for bigger sound. Works great. They never turn the first Lightspeed off. Ha.
Another great show guys, glad Tuesdays are tps days again..and thanks for turning me onto the tru fi stuff..bought the big orange colordriver...love it w/me tele and tweed..
Those four pedals go together well and make quite a workable pedal board as they are. I notice "vibe machine" has an expression pedal input too which is nice and would probably make a for a decent Leslie speaker emulator. I'm not a fan of trim pots, but at least the "vibe machine" has them outside and more accessible. The "Pick'N'Mix" mid-week fix is appreciated. Cheers chaps.
wow congrats on the big chopper Dan. I knew when you had an audio kitchen in to try you'd want your own. Amazing sounds oozing out of it throughout the show
It amazes me how you guys can get a beautiful tone out of anything. I’m pretty sure you could plug a lead into an empty tin can, and it’ll still come out sounding amazing.
Mayyyyyyybe. But don’t forget the basics. Nice guitars, really nice amps, fantastic switching and power... Get the basics right then indeed anything has a good chance of sounding good. Nice mics and Universal Audio hardware/software helps as well. It’s a good start point. :0)
Thanks for the Tuesday video. I'm digging that analog delay: it's the perfect size, the jacks are top-mounted, there tap tempo with subdivisions, a tone control, modulation, a master volume and it sounds great. I'm not sure what more you'd want in an analog delay pedal to fit on a small board.
Thanks. I had a look and the feature set, size and price are very similar. The wider box allowed them to put all the controls on the front. I actually wanted a shorter maximum delay time, such as the Memory Man Deluxe 550-TT, but that pedal would take up way too much room. Less BBD chips usually means a bit less high end rolloff and distortion, as far as I know.
It seems like finding a good medium gain pedal would be the easiest thing in the world, but in reality, I have found excellent light gain pedals and great distortions, fuzzes and heavy gain, but a fat medium gain pedal AC/DC style is often hard to find. At least good ones. I tried the .45 cal by J Rockett and it's great but not QUITE enough gain on tap. A Rat is too much for medium gain. But this Southland does this Goldilocks thing perfectly. A medium gain terror! Ordered it today to pair with my Light Speed pedal.
Thanks for having the Dry Vibe on: a very worthy Hendrix/Trower style vibe pedal, also a great Pink Floyd style vibe pedal is the Black Cat Vibe... a personal favorite - just wish they'd ditch the old style housing.
Hi guys, I have some ideas for new episodes. 1. How to make your sound fit in the mix. You would just need to have a band backing track at a reasonable vol. Show us the process of tailoring EQ and gain stacking, relative to the other instruments, to be able to be heard, without being too loud. 2. How to approach recreating a sound you've heard on an album etc. You could have Mick playing a particular sound, with pedal board covered, and then get Dan to go through the process of identifying EQ curve, gain characteristics, modulation etc to try and re-create Dan's sound.
I'd want the TC Electronic Viscous Vibe in there as well so we can get an idea of how a 'budget' univibe stacks up against the boutique ones. Add in a Keeley Monterey, Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe, Carl Martin Purple Moon and a Wilson Haze ...... and I'd be doing half the show myself! :D
Keeley Monterey and Korg Nuvibe are featured in this episode ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GgvrW5ug6xw.html . Maybe an episode about phasers vs uni vibes vs rotary/Leslie , when and how to use each, it is confusing to me, must be for others too.
I'd like to hear the BJF MInt Green Vibe and, for a budget option, the NU>X Monterey (which is awesome imo). The BJF Bearfoot pedal is really versatile. It can sound like a classic vibe, subtle or deep throb, and it does a pretty good impersonation of a phaser as well
Yeah, they did both the Keeley Monterey and the Keeley Dark Side, both of which have Univibe and Rotary sounds. I preferred the Dark Side (and have one), as I can get my Hendrix tones with other pedals, but the Monterey is excellent.
The lead singer/co lead guitarist in my band has that Southland and my god. Through his deville is just insane, if you could foot switch between about 9:00 gain and 4:00 gain you wouldn't need both an overdrive and a fuzz. That thing is crazy.
I dig the Pick'N'Mix videos, guys! Glad to see another one. I know you're trying to keep them relatively short, but it would be cool to see a very quick comparison to another pedal in the same genre just to get a reference sometimes. That Vibe Machine sounds great, but what is its primary sonic difference compared to Dan's Mojo Vibe, for example. Not at all suggesting a full A/B, but even 30 seconds would probably help put things in context. Also, Mick always says he doesn't know what to do with muff pedals, and then just rips! Muffs are one of my favorite types of pedals. Always fun to see BOTH of you play them since you make them sound so good! Thanks for another great show.
Hey Dan. God bless. With that new amp you have the best of both worlds. That means you don’t need your 61’ Vox. Can I borough it??? LOL God bless you guys from Puerto Rico. Love your show!!!
Great to see the return of PickNMix, especially with such an awesome selection of pedalboard contenders! On the day, for me at least, the Southland was the standout performer, but I’m not sure you got the best out of the Floyd Fuzz. Dan was spot on about the true worth of a Ram’s Head Muff being the violin-like tones that you can generate at low-to-moderate gain settings, but the response to guitar volume and its ability to “play well with others” are also important. I’d have liked to hear Mick’s Strat working the volume pot and playing with an Electric Mistress and the Panther Cub in front of the Big Chopper. That’s how you get the David Gilmour sounds of the Animals and Wall era. Perhaps the main reason Mick can’t get on with big muffs is his preference for mid-light Fendery amps; pedals like the Floyd really need amps with a beefy mid-range to truly shine. Plenty of people on this channel have requested an episode on Gilmour tones and several have proposed inviting Bjorn Riis onto the show to help you do it, but I can see why you guys are reluctant to start down the single-artist-tone route. Perhaps a compromise that would please everybody would be to get Bjorn on to demonstrate the tonal difference between the various flavours (Ram’s Head, Triangle, Sovtek, etc.) of big muffs out there, and to talk about how they work with boosts, modulation and other effects. For example, I’ve found using an MXR 6-band EQ directly in front of my Vick Audio ‘73 Ram’s Head, and taking all frequencies down below unity, helps me get an even creamier response from the muff pedal at low-gain settings. I offer this idea only as an illustration of how muffs in general (and this splendid Floyd Fuzz in particular) need understanding in detail if users like Mick are going to get comfortable with them, and discover how to release their full potential. As I told somebody on another channel who complained about his newly acquired big muff “sounding like an angry wasp”, if that’s what you’re hearing, you’re either plugged into the wrong amp or else you’re dialling it in wrong. If you guys are really into “asking better questions” (as I’m sure you are) there’s plenty to be asked and answered here!
All good Steve - Mick here. Would be great to get Bjorn on. The Muff just isn’t my thing, even in its prime setting. Driving a Power Boost into a Hiwatt, maybe. But still not really. We should do it anyway to keep you Muff lovers happy!
Thanks Mick! We’re always happy out here in Pedal Show land (on Fridays anyway, and now again on Tuesdays) but a Bjorn again muffs show would certainly add to the joy - at least for the discerning amongst us. Of course, others might want to cancel their subscriptions ... but hey ho!
3:10 I truly thought the Way Huge Supa-Puss was the first analog delay with tap tempo, but research shows that yes the Panther did beat its release by a matter of months. Interesting.
I've said it elsewhere, but I really think Greer should put the Lightspeed and the Southland in a dual pedal. One being a natural extension of the other. I'd love it if they'd do that and give you the option of either stacking or toggling between the two. Not everyone is a stacker.:-)
Man, guys. Dude. I love pretty much everything about that Ram's Head. My early 2000's black Russian Muff is in the process of going the way of the dodo. I think I've found its replacement. I effing love your show, gentlemen. You always bring us new and exciting things to want. And as a recording engineer, you've helped me grow my ability to achieve and capture great guitar tones. Cheers!
Well, since we are apparently are entertaining pedal review requests, may I suggest taking a good look at any of Meris' pedals: The Mercury7 Reverb, Polymoon Delay, Ottobit Jr. Bitcrusher (et al) or the new Enzo Multi-voice synthesizer....
Always enjoyable boyz. Thx. Any opportunity to look at the Beetronix Overhive at some point in the future? Sounds like a killer pedal...but the final jury would be Dan and Mick.
‘Oh man, everyday” - yeeeees! Dan you legend, you turned me on to fuzz. Here I am, a Sunface and 2 PigDogs later (and a Hudson in the post...), now I’m thinking that Floyd Fuzz needs a space on the board too. Though the I’m keeping an eye out for Shin-Ei reissues soon. Aargggh, the other kidney’s going on the market (could be risky). Anyway, another awesome show from the 2 best gents on RU-vidLand. Happy Tuesday!
+Craig S with those fuzzes Craig I think you’ll love the Floyd fz, it’s different from those others, smoother but not sterile or overly compressed, sounds awesome :)
That Pedal Show thanks so much for the reply - I hears you! And btw, Mick’s sound from 33:40 with all pedals-to-the-metal was a thing of beauty and a joy forever. In fact....I must watch this episode again right now.
That Pedal Show oops my bad.....just got another PigDog (the Prosecutor Mk II.v). This fuzz obsession is your fault Steinhardt! :} I totally get it though...flavours of funky fuzzness. It’s just glorious.
When you guys are having a beer, I always want to join in!! The problem is that these get released at 8am Atlantic time... a bit of an early start!! Now, you're not only contributing to my GAS, but my juvenile delinquency, as well!!
Well done! You’ve inspired a painful quantity of amp lust deep in my heart while adding a few pedals to my list. Would love to see EHX’s new Triangle Big Muff on the show, sometime. (The Blurst too, but that may be a bridge too weird.)
Greer Little Samson is another great pedal. It's like the big bad brother to the Lightspeed & Southland. Wampler Pantheon coming up on TPS anytime soon? I know you want to!
Thanks for another great show. I would love some tips on how to use Big Muff style pedals without them getting lost in the mix. Maybe you could do a Fuzz How To show.
Love that Liquid, Pulsating, Hypnotic Vibe Sound. I own the Drybell V-1. Fantastic Pedal. Other Vibe's worth checking out = Electric Orange Moon Vibe Mark 2, DLS Versa Vibe, MJM 60's Vibe, Jam Pedals Retro Vibe Mark 2, and The "Shiftee Vibe" if you want The Most Authentic Univibe Clone available - All are Incredible. Dan & Mick should be on 24/7/365 - Nothing like T.P.S.
Could we get a comparison between the real Tru-Fi Rams Head version and this one in the future? I’m looking for that real comfortably numb tone where the sound, almost cello like.
All I’d say about that - Mick here - is that the pedal is only a small part of that sound... Davey G’s Tone is a huge layering deal. And all the crazy recoding stuff, desks, mics etc..... Pedal is just a tiny bit of it.
